Jets | Could Cutler be on the radar? Thu, 19 Mar 2009 09:50:08 -0700
Rich Cimini, of The New York Daily News, reports if the New York Jets decide to make a play for Denver Broncos QB Jay Cutler, they may need to reach out to the Cleveland Browns and Browns head coach Eric Mangini, who the Jets fired as their head coach during the offseason. Three-way trades are rare in the league, but for the Jets to obtain Cutler they'd likely need one of the Browns QBs (Brady Quinn) as part of the compensation to Denver. The Browns, in turn, could come away with draft picks from the Jets. The Jets won't comment on their potential interest in Cutler and cannot due to tampering rules, but a league source noted they have not ruled out making a play for the disgruntled quarterback.
This one goes to the source.
f the Jets decide to make a strong play for Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, who could wind up on the trading block in the coming days, they may need help from a certain Cleveland resident whom they unceremoniously dumped - Eric Mangini.
Wouldn't that be a trip?
The Jets have the need, the cap room and the draft-pick ammunition to make a serious offer for Cutler, but the one thing they probably don't have is a quarterback the Broncos would take in return.
That's where Mangini and the Browns would come in.
The former Jets coach has two viable quarterbacks, Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson, neither of whom has received an endorsement from Mangini. Quinn might be appealing to Broncos coach Josh McDaniels because he played at Notre Dame under Charlie Weis, who used to work with McDaniels in New England. Quinn is well-versed in the Weis/Patriots offensive system, which McDaniels will use in Denver.
That means the Browns could emerge as the third team in a potential three-way trade. The main components of a three-way deal would be the Jets getting Cutler, the Broncos getting Quinn and the Browns getting a premium draft pick (or picks) to help their rebuilding process. Without Mangini, the Jets would be hard-pressed to swing the deal.
Three-way trades are rare in the NFL, but Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum teamed up with the Broncos and Falcons in a 2006 trade that sent defensive end John Abraham to the Falcons.
The Jets haven't commented on their potential interest in Cutler, and they won't because of tampering restrictions, but they haven't ruled out the possibility of making an offer for the disgruntled quarterback, according to a league source. Translation: They're interested. The degree of interest isn't clear, but internal discussions on Cutler are ongoing. One Tannenbaum confidant said he suspects the GM already has placed a call to the Broncos.
Cutler, upset that his name was floated in trade talks, has formally requested a trade. It doesn't mean he's a goner, although people familiar with the situation believe the Cutler-McDaniels relationship is irreparable. McDaniels has said he'd like another chance to resolve his differences with Cutler before putting him on the trading block.
It's possible that trade talks could commence at the NFL owners' meetings, which begin Sunday in Dana Point, Calif.
The Jets own the 17th, 52nd and 76th picks in the upcoming draft. They'd have to surrender their first-round choice in a Cutler trade - and then some. Is he worth it?
"If the Jets have a chance to trade for him, I'd get him," an NFC scout said Wednesday, speaking on the condition of anonymity. "This kid is one of the top 10 quarterbacks in the league. When you get one of those guys, you've got a chance to win every Sunday."
Publicly, the Jets say they'd be content to go into training camp with a three-way competition between Kellen Clemens, Brett Ratliff and Erik Ainge, but they also recognize that it's unusual for a 25-year-old Pro Bowl quarterback to become available. Owner Woody Johnson has a new stadium to fill and PSLs to sell, and Cutler would be a long-term draw.
But there's some baggage. Cutler's interception-prone ways (37 in 37 career starts) would clash with Rex Ryan's defensive-oriented philosophy. Cutler's detractors also point to his record (17-20), although he has played with a horrible defense. When the Broncos hold opponents under 24 points, his record is 13-4. There are also questions about his maturity and attitude.
"Cutler is cocky and he comes off as a little arrogant," the scout said, "but who wants a milquetoast quarterback?"

So,...it's OK for Denver to shop him around, but it's tampering for the Jets to inquire after the fact ?
Not that I want this to happen, unless it's DA to Denver.
Hell, just trade DA to the Jets for their picks,...

You really can't talk about wanting someone in the open....you would need to do that through the Broncos.

Does anyone else read this and come away with the feeling that once again the Browns would come out of this scenario on the short end of the stick ?....Personally , I feel that IF this is Mangini's way of starting a total rebuilding of the Browns(Again ) that he won't survive long as the Head Coach....IMO we have to either go out and pay whatever it takes to get Cutler or we have to name our starter at QB , trade the other guy and sign a veteran backup ASAP....Uncertainty and Distraction is Not what we need heading into the Draft and the season.....

Read what? A completely unsubstantiated opinion of some writer?
And what makes you think we'd just give up a player and not get something of equal or greater value in return?
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

i read the article as us potentially getting AT LEAST a 1st round pick. the guy acknowledged that mangini would be driving the trade bus and the writer expects to get reemed in picks for it. if we can get a 1st and additional picks, DO IT.
it's unfortunate that quinn would be the sacrificial lamb, so to speak, but this helps us so much more than he could help us in our current state. further, for quinn fans, he is in a great environment to succeed with the receivers they have (dunno about running game since it's no longer shan).
it was always argued that DA is a product of his support (whether that's valid is another discussion) but if we get another 2 first day picks, one of them being in the first round, our team can be good enough as a whole that DA could be the product of a damn good team.

I understand and share your concern, but I want to give Mangini his shot and see if there's the proverbial tunnel light. Cutler I'm not interested in at all. I'd rather DA play backup, but I also want Quinn to win the job as a result of this year's camp competition, if there is one, or like you said, name him and get on with whatever it is we get for DA.

I agree.
But it doesn't really make much sense.....why wouldn't the broncos just deal with us rather than a 3 way deal if all they are getting is Quinn??
The Jets are probably going to have to send Denver a pick, and us a couple of picks.

No matter what they do it better be the right decision. Which means we better win games.
I'll support Mangini and Kok. But it's time we get things right and the luck bounce our way for a change.

Maybe we don't want Cutler?
If the Jets want him that bad, and the Broncos want him out that bad, and need us to pull it off, we can get more than fair value for it.
Denver just may have to settle for a swap of QBs - one who wants out for another one. They're the ones who can end up on the short end. Since they're the one with the mess, that seems right. The Jets would end up giving up fair value for Cutler, we're just the ones who would receive it. We make out, the Jets break even, and the Broncos have to pay to unload a problem.

I really hope that the browns are not so stupid as to trade away Quinn- unless its for a couple of first round picks- i doubt that offer is out there- so he is off limits.
Now, if Denver is forced to trade Cutler, they are obviously going to be needing a QB. If the Jets are serious about Cutler, it will cost them. I would put DA into the three ring circus- and take the Jets #52 in exhange for sending DA to Denver. Denver would want the Jets #17 and maybe the jets 1st rounder next year. So the jets would be giving up two 1st rounders and a second for a young pro bowl QB. The broncos would be getting a probowl QB and 2 firsts. Maybe they can make it work with DA. The #52 is a good deal for the browns, and in this three ring circus we do not get screwed.
Quinn in that same scenario would not work for me. The jets would have to send the #17 and #52 to the Browns and probably a first round pick to the broncos as well next year along with other picks to balance things out. It would be a steep price for the jets to pay. AT #5- hello Sanchez- because i would not be happy with DA as the future. He could keep the seat warm this year and Sanchez could step in as the second year starter.

Variations of this 3 way trade have been floated on Sirius Radio for a couple of days. Surprise!! Sirius is based in NYC. Hence the Jets involvement, IMO.
The one I've heard recently was Quinn to Denver, Cutler to NYC, us getting the Jets first rounder and Darryl Reavis and I forget who gets our first and what else is involved.
But basically, as far as I can tell, it ends up with us being the football version of a $2 whore for Denver and the Jets.
No, Thanks.

Bingo,...and here's my new Lotto "kicker" --- the Broncos and the Jets are both better (on paper) than the Browns, both in the AFC. Why extend that gap ?
Why send Cutler to NYC, and make Denver happy with (either Quinn or Anderson) and/or leave us here with just Anderson and needing to sign a vet (:::deep sigh::::) or draft a QB ??
Jsut say no and let DA and Quinn battle it out in camp. I'll even settle for DA beating out Quinn, rather than make those other two better,.....

Because we have too many other holes on the team to have 2 possibly starting quality QBs on our roster. We have to make ourselves better before we can worry about anyone else.
If we can maximize DA's value by utilizing someone else's desperation, then we should do it. Now, we would definitely want to make sure we got the best end of the deal though because we have no reason to make the trade if we don't. And both other teams (Denver and whoever else) would know that going in.

In what situation do we have 2 possibly good starters after getting Cutler ? If Anderson can't--as most assume--stay here with Quinn as the starter, why do we think he would be OK behind Cutler,...??
Or am I not following you correctly ?? (And that's OK if not)

No, that was my fault, I was not clear enough.
I was saying we currently have 2 possible starting QBs. DA is better than some current projected starting QBs for other teams (Tavaris, McCown, C-Pepp, Clemens to name four) and the jury is still out on Quinn. I was just saying we have too many other holes on the team, so we should just pick one and deal the other for draft picks while we still can.

Thanks, and while I understand where you're at, a trade to get picks is a better trade with DA, EVEN though Quinn probably has MORE "pick" value.

that's exactly what i saw as an ideal situation. two more picks plus clarity/commitment to one qb, we can do a lot of good with those two additional picks.
man - 2 first rounders, 2 second rounders, and a third? crazy awesome.

Thats it in a nut shell. We hold the cards for what ever trade is being proposed so we should come out of it smelling like roses.
We don't like what's being offer we can just as easily go into next season with both DA and Quinn.

"mangini is a defensive coach from NE so he has no real ties to the system offensively."
Yeah and who is Mangini's OC - DaBoll who was working with the offense in NE a LLLLLOOOOOTTT longer than McDaniels. I know Daboll was Weiss' WR coach...what was McDaniels duties then?
On this trade stuff...still the road to Mecca still seems to go through Quinn...if he's the deal maker why are we giving him away.
Of course you all know we would be picking Sanchez then at #5.
So lets see we get a 1st n 3rd...Lose BQ who we spent a 1st n 2nd on. And is the Deal maker cause he is so "PERFECT" for the McDaniel system that is suppose to be similar to ours.
Will use our #5 on Sanchez our QB so in a sense we trade down to #17 and got a 3rd out of it for exchanging our QB ready to go to one who has to learn the game and get ready. Oh and No amazing pass Rusher in Everett Brown...or RT in Andre Smith?
for Wells? OSU kids will be happy.
I don't know I wouldn't be too happy and it seems like we are bending over backwards to help two other teams get Better now
We get used...it better be for more than a 1st n 3rd.

mcdaniels was the qb coach in 04, and when weiss left in 05, there was no OC named for the 05 season. it's been rumored that mcd called the plays in 05, and he officially became the OC in the year after through 2008 season. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_McDanielsi'm trying to find any quotes from when daboll addressed the media but i can't. i remmeber he said something to the effect of "i'll run a variation of the NE offense" but i remember wondering which one it would be considering it wasn't specific. i also add that mangini, to my recollection, said that they'd constantly adjust their offense. i also know that daboll was the qb coach last season and helped favre get acclimated and the offense they ran around favre, they can do for DA so there is no "absolute tie" to a ball control offense. sorry, saw you updated your post. to the rest of it, why is it a given we'd take sanchez at #5 if we trade quinn? in the scenario you described, we get hosed. there is no reason to trade quinn and take a #5 qb. my take is we'd have a starting qb (how effective varies in opinion) in DA where we'd then use the 2 1sts, 2 2nds, and a 3rd to strengthen the rest of the team.

I was very vocal about trading up to get Campbell, with the reasonings being if we're going to bother to move up to get a QB, move up to get a real one. Instead we got Frye, which has landed us in this position right now.
I'd be all over that deal. While the guy I really wanted was Rodgers (yeah, who's laughing now *L*) I always thought that Campbell would be a good QB (though perhaps not a great one). I still feel that way today. Make that trade (though no 1st day pick ALONG with another player besides Quinn) and I'd be happy.

If we trade Quinn, we had better get Cutler back in the deal, period. If the stance of this bunch is to give this team over to DA or Campbell, then they are total morons.

The two teams that Frye was on before being let go were terrible. The O-Line was awful.
Do you really think that Jason Campbell would have changed anything?
I doubt it
I wanted Aaron Rogers too though. I liked Braylon but felt like Rogers was the top QB, and he would have been a good option for us. Who knows though, if Rogers was stuck here then..........he could have been ruined also

As a developmental QB, Campbell wasn't asked to be anyone's savior.
Frye was, is, and will always be a bum.
Nobody can compare the two, not with a straight face.

Agreed! I would rate Jason Campbell in the bottom third of NFL starting qbs. I would be upset to trade Brady Quinn with Campbell as a replacement. Cutler on the other hand - Brady, don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.

Whats the difference? In either scenario we would still end up with a sucky QB, with one sucky QB (Cambell) being slightly less sucky than the other (Frye) The Redskins were a better team with Todd freaking Collins as their QB, what does that tell ya?

It's clear to me that people don't really know the metrics and the curve that Campbell is following. I suppose there's a 1% chance that he'd be traded here in some bizarre 3-way, so here's his numbers:
2006: 7 games 110 of 207 (53%) 1297 yards 10 TD's 6 INT's 24 rushes 107 yards sacked 7 times for a 76.5 rating. This was his first year seeing any action.
2007: 13 games 250 of 417 (60%) 2700 yards 12 TD's 11 INT's 36 rushes for 185 yards sacked 21 times for a 77.6 rating.
2008: 16 games 315 of 506 (62.3%) 3245 yards 13 TD's 6 INT's 47 rushes 258 yards sacked 38 times for an 84.3 rating.
For those that don't get it, a QB's progressions are telling. Campbell is curving the right way.
I'd settle right now for a QB who's doing what Campbell has done in his 3rd year. I wanted him as a developmental guy if I couldn't have landed Rodgers. We'd be damned smart to swing a trade for Campbell, as he's only going to get better. His ceiling isn't as high as some, but when it's all said and done, he's going to have years of ratings in the high 80's or low 90's, and that's exactly what we need.
Time to kick the ant-hill.................I'd trade Quinn for him straight up right now, and drop Quinn off at the airport myself
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

that's not right though. even if you believe campbell will be the better QB (and since we have Quinn, I hope not), Quinn has more value in the league right now, so you should get more for him.

This was also reported on NFL.com Quote:
if the New York Jets decide to make a play for Denver Broncos QB Jay Cutler, they may need to reach out to the Cleveland Browns and Browns head coach Eric Mangini,
If we trade Quinn they can take my season tickets and PSL right with them. I am so sick of "rebuilding". I think 20 years is enough. I thought Mangini was going to be the answer. Well, he might be, but he just didn't understand the question.
