Rogers-Mangini rift still unresolvedComment Email Print Share By James Walker ESPN.com Archive Apparently, the internal rift between Pro Bowl defensive tackle Shaun Rogers and new Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini remains unresolved.
According to a source, Rogers has been a no-show this week for the team's offseason workout program, which began Monday.
While the workouts are considered voluntary, Mangini has made it clear that he wants his players in attendance because it was his first chance to address the team in a group setting.
Mangini and Rogers have clashed for nearly two months when the coach initially refused to communicate with his star player, despite being in the same place on two separate occasions. Rogers didn't take the snubs lightly, as things escalated to the point where he asked to be released from his six-year, $42 million contract.
Rogers is guaranteed a $5 million bonus this month, making the player's release unlikely, and should earn an additional $950,000 in likely-to-be-reached incentives when he's on the field. Mangini has since attempted to reach out to Rogers, but his absence this week makes it clear that there is still much work to be done to patch up the relationship.
The eight-year veteran had one of his best seasons in 2008, registering 76 tackles and 4.5 sacks. The Browns finished 4-12 last season.

That shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. I would have been shocked to learn that Rogers had shown up.
Mangini made this mess, now he has to fix it.

i dont see how Mangini is totally at fault here....Rodgers had the same chance to go introduce himself but chose not to. he is being a cry baby about all of this, he isnt the team only a part of it and he needs to realize that. we all heard this is how rodgers was before he got here last year. he needs to man up and quit being a crybaby!

Well, isn't that an inflammatory bit of revisionist history.

Oh, no! A player missed voluntary workouts! Must be Mangini's fault! Thomas Jones skipped the first two days! He must have not gotten the memo that Mangini isn't in New York anymore!

OK so Cutler is a baby.....You don't want him around but Rogers is ok and Mangini is the one who screwed this up...Come on Toad...lets be a little consistant here...
Mangini didn't make squat...We all know this is about Haynesworth's big Contract and Roger's Big Baby attitude...He didn't like being told he had to be at a certain weight after what he did for the previous regime...GMAFB
You go on and keep bashing Mangini because you don't like him...just like you bash Cutler because you don't like him...That is the ONLY consistancy in your stories....
Are there things Mangini could have done better...absolutely...But don't be an idoit and ingore the fact that Rogers is the one that is pushing this for all its worth..not Mangini...
I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...

Mangini certainly should be trying to fix this issue with Rogers...however, if it is truly about getting a new contract, then there is nothing Mangini can do because it is not about him.

Basing your assumptions on this statement represents a flawed and uninformed opinion that I've no desire to waste time disputing, suffice it to say in today's NFL, dealing with spoiled players isn't the same as it was 20 years ago. Until Mangini has done what Bellyache has done, he'll have to learn to coddle some players. Rogers is one such player.

Don't let the media drivel about this being about money influence your opinion. Rogers just signed a huge new deal one year ago. His agent didn't demand a new contract.
This is about 'Gini and Co. coming on too damned strong and alienating a high-maintenance player. Nothing more, nothing less.

They have an unhappy QB in Denver and we have our unhappy NT...time for a straight up swap and chalk it up as Mangini's first major screw up.
I'm not happy about the way Mangini has handled this situation, from beginning to end. But you can't make someone play for you that doesn't want to be here.
Then trade Quinn for a first round pick (or multiple picks) and we are back in the hunt to draft a replacement for Rogers...problem solved...

We don't need Cutler...
I would trade Rogers for a pair of 2nd round picks...
Snag up B.J. Raji w/ number 5 if Curry is gone, and then build my o-line in Round 2.

My question is, if you wanted to meet me so badly and I'm your new boss, why can't you come over and tap me on the shoulder and introduce yourself..
that's my take on it... Rogers doesn't have to show up and that's fine. but it will most likely cost him at some point with the coach.
Whether Rogers likes it or not, Mangini is his new boss... he either gets used to it or retires....

Can we have a 2nd opinion on this. James Walker beat the Cleveland Sports community on this story??? No other reports and not kffl that will just tell us what Walker said?
And was he excused or a No show? But its something I can believe...but didn't expect. Then again he wasn't at our Volunteer camp last year either.

Why would he have to be excused from a voluntary workout?
I can see notifying the staff you're not coming but I don't think he would need to be excused.

No have to ....but have the Courtesy with an explained absence - had to take care of family business, pie eating contest at the local fair....you know an excuse not so much needing to be excused but just having a reason for the no show.

The big baby is missing voluntary workouts, big deal. He is a lazy ass as far as offseason work is concerned. That and he probably is using this press to get back at Mangini. I love the guys playing style, but other than that he is a (insert a word used to describe a cat).
He has a contract and he will keep throwing his hissy fits as long as the media keeps putting Mangini in a bad light. I hate these kinds of players and if he was traded I wouldn't blink an eye. He'll come to camp at the correct weight knowing he doesn't get paid unless he does. This is his way of getting even with the boss. Mangini is going to meet his new team as a group, so him not showing is his way of getting even. Wuss plain and simple.
If he continues his whining ways, you can gaurantee that if I'm at camp I'll heckle his big immature arse, and hope others do too.

Cursed by your own past history eo Mary Kay has an article out on the topic now. Says basically the same thing. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2009/03/report_says_shaun_rogers_is_mi.html Report says Shaun Rogers is missing from Cleveland Browns off-season workouts by Mary Kay Cabot / Plain Dealer Reporter Thursday March 19, 2009, 5:57 PM Plain Dealer Shaun Rogers, shown last year against Buffalo, reportedly is not participating in the Browns off-season program.CLEVELAND -- Disgruntled Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers has boycotted the start of the Browns off-season workouts, which began on Monday, ESPN.com reported today. Rogers asked the Browns to release him from his six-year, $42 million contract recently after he felt he was snubbed twice by Browns new coach Eric Mangini. Rogers was also miffed that his first contact from the new regime was a mandate to show up for the off-season program at a prescribed weight, a source said. Rogers felt that because he played hurt the second half of last season and was in compliance with his weight requirement, such a demand was unnecessary. Rogers' agent, Kennard McGuire, declined to comment. Rogers earned a $6 million option bonus on March 6, instead of being released. But it appears the rift between the Pro Bowl performer and his new coach continues. Although the program is voluntary, Mangini, who has reportedly tried to reach out to Rogers, has made it clear he wants everyone participating.
Procrastination is caused by the fear of success

That specific incident isn't one that factors in to the equation, though the media would love for you to believe it did. 'Gini states he wasn't aware Rogers was at the function, and there's been nothing to refute that. The problems between the coach and the player stem from two other issues.
Quote:
Whether Rogers likes it or not, Mangini is his new boss... he either gets used to it or retires....
Or.............He plays the loopholes that were created with the CBA, and gets away with doing the absolute minimum he has to
There are two issues at play here, and one of them is NOT about money. That perticular rumor was floated by our beloved Cleveland media, the same media that no longer have contacts to spoon-feed them information, so they have to do what they can to sell newspapers: Speculate regardless of validity or responsibility.
The first issue was the Mangini snub, not at the function, but where he never picked up the phone to contact Rogers, a known headcase of a player. Twenty years ago, a coach gets away with that. Today? Unless you're Bill Bellyache, you can't. Mangini only attempted to fix this AFTER the damage was done, which is by now obviously too little too late to avoid a problem.
The second issue was the letter that told Rogers not to show up unless he was in shape. While on the surface emphasizing something that was built into a players contract isn't a bad thing, again, in today's NFL, it's a risky move. To a petulant child like Rogers, it's a slap in the face. Again, if your Bill Bellyache and the Pats, you can probably get away with it. If your Mangini and the Browns, you can't. We could have just as easily let him come to camp, then given him twenty days to get below the prescribed weight limit. But no, the new regime wanted to send a message. It was a bad move, so here we sit.
Now as that snarky-tool DinD stated there could be other things at play here. But what we know is that Mangini played heavy-handed with Rogers and it set the stage for the petulant child to throw a tantrum by crossing his arms and not coming to DaDa when called
We've had this discussion before D, but I'm going to say this again: In a perfect world, the employer should be able to dictate to the employee. It worked in the 50's, but times have changed. What should be right and fair isn't right and fair anymore. In today's world of NFL free agency, where the players are the show, they get to call many more shots than we'd like, which is the situation we have here. So, again, Mangini created the foundations of this problem, so it's up to him to fix it. Does this mean Rogers is within his rights to act like this? No, but the world isn't fair and perfect, and sometimes coaches have to coddle players. Rogers is that kind of player, and Mangini is going to have to go there.

As has since been reported, the deal was four years and $48 million. The rest of the money was fluff, not unlike the monies the CB got when signing with the Niners a couple of years ago.
But don't take my word for it. Take Rogers' agents word for it: Quote:
McGuire stressed that "there are no financial or contract concerns on our behalf."
And since I'm forced to spell all this out for everyone (again), here's the rest of the story:Quote:
Another source confirmed a report on nfl.com that Rogers is upset about two separate incidents when he felt he was snubbed by Mangini. The first was when Mangini failed to say hello to him in the training room at the Browns facility and the second was at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards on Jan. 23 when both men were in the media room at the same time but did not acknowledge each other.
Rogers, who capped off his season by making the Pro Bowl, is also upset about a larger issue, the nature of which is unknown. But most of it boils down to a lack of communication, sources said.
That's from ESPN.
So what's the other issue? Sure, you think it's about money, right Cal? WRONG!!! Since this article came out in February, we all caught wind of the letter that came to Rogers stating he didn't need to show up if he wasn't under his prescribed weight limit.
So, if everyone wants to continue to put their heads under rocks and believe this is about money, feel free. Don't bother letting the facts get in the way of the truth. Make all the flawed ASSumptions you like.

I don't think Rogers is worth that kind of coddling. I hope EM stands his ground. Might be Napoleonic, but Mangini calls the shots. It might be better for the team as a whole to have this all just "go away."

Rogers is the best player on this team. I have a very hard time believing that 25 other NFL teams would have gone the road that 'Gini had. The Pats could have gotten away with it. The Donks can't, so here they sit, just like us.
There's a pattern here...........

Funny we won back in the 50's and early 60's when they players were treated like that, but we have not won since we started giving into them like crying kids in a toy store. I still say times have changed but people have not.

If we were the only team in the league that changed from those days, I might agree with you, but it's the world of the NFL that changed, not the Browns.
Free agency, the success, the money, the ego's........all of it..........that's what changed. It gave the power to the players, and this is the environment that's been created.
The Jeannie is out of the bottle. It can't be put back in. We can't go back to those days, except under one single premise: If we're a team that's won it all and can THEN dictate to our players. One or two teams in the league can do that right now. We aren't one of'em.
Like it or not, thinking it's fair or not.......that doesn't matter, because it doesn't change what IS.
On paper, Communism works......

Well he just proved to me that he's not the best player on the team,....he DID have the best season and played better last year for his position than anybody on the team did last year,...no argument there. Coddling him to keep him for that reason is just not in my playbook.
And I ain't so sure that as poorly as the team was led last year that it wasn't easy for him to have been such a shiner.
Now if he shows up tomorrow after an epiphany, I can eat crow with the best of them,....

This is about 'Gini and Co. coming on too damned strong and alienating a high-maintenance player. Nothing more, nothing less.
High maintenance = Big Baby = why we were able to get him in the first place = why he has issues now. Nothing more , nothing less. If Mangini starts coddling now we'll be no better off than what Romeo has left behind.

*shrug* Then why did Mangini try and reach out to him afterwards if it wasn't the right thing to do?
This hardline stance stuff sounds tough, but it causes these problems. Had the Donks coddled Cutler a little they wouldn't be in this position.
There is no black and white in today's NFL. It's all shades of grey. We're not talking about coddling in terms of taking a bad apple who's been treated like a prince yet is still acting like a turd. We're talking about a guy who felt a little slighted and could have been calmed down with a five minute phone call
There are two people at fault here. All the "coddling" it would have taken to fix this was a five minute phone call. The fact that it's now where it's at is stOOpid, and both parties retain some of the fault. The unfortunate part is that this started with Mangini, so it's up to him to fix it.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***
