by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter Monday March 23, 2009, 4:11 PM Associated Press Receiver David Patten will rejoin the Browns after winning two Super Bowl championships with New England.DANA POINT, Calif. -- The Browns are bringing back David Patten to help fill their void at wide receiver, General Manager George Kokinis said at NFL owners meetings today. "We're going to sign him. It's another veteran leader, experienced," Kokinis said. Patten will be 35 on Aug. 19. He played for the Browns in the 2000 season and then experienced a couple Super Bowl championships with the New England Patriots. Patten spent the past two seasons with New Orleans. He has 324 catches in his 13-year NFL career. The Browns are thin at receiver and don't know if Donte Stallworth will play for them in 2009. Stallworth could be facing legal problems as a result of a fatal car accident in Miami Beach on March 14. "We had David in before the Stallworth incident occurred, so that signing wasn't really triggered by that," Kokinis said. The addition of Patten coincides with a report from New York that the Browns engaged in trade talks with the Giants about Braylon Edwards. Kokinis confirmed he spoke with Giants General Manager Jerry Reese during the NFL combine in Indianapolis last month, but said nothing came of it. "We exchanged ideas about everything, but nothing really culminated into specifics," he said. "I'm excited to have Braylon on this team. He brings a dimension that not a lot of receivers can bring in relation to going up and attacking the football. He had extremely good production a couple years ago and we're anticipating he has that this year." http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2009/03/cleveland_browns_adding_a_rece.htmlI changed the title of this thread from,"Cleveland Browns adding a receiver, confirms talks about Braylon Edwards", to remove the,"confirms talks about Braylon Edwards", part.
The article does not say anything of the sort that confirms talks about Edwards. It says "the addition of Patton coincides with a report", (and that report is nothing more than an unsubstantiated rumor as admitted several times within the article by the reporter who wrote it)
Conincides simply means that the signing of Patton happened at about the same time the unsubstantiated rumor was published.
To turn "conincides" into "confirms" is very misleading and that is the reason I changed the title.
Who knows what becomes of rumors. Some of them turn out to be true. Many of them do not. When it is a real news story we can talk about it ad nausium. Until then it is a rumor with nothing to back it up, admitted by the author, and as such it will be disallowed to be published on the board.

Good god! I understand the virtue of saving money in today's economy, but why sign an over the hill bum, when I'm certain there are younger bums they could have signed just as cheap. Who's next,Methusala?
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem

Former Jets WR Wayne Chrebet is still available. Our offense is looking pretty putrid for next year. Hopefully the draft will change that.

I noticed that he didn't say "going up and catching the football".. just that he attacks it.

jc. similar article with more detail on the trade talks web page Kokinis: I have not shopped Quinn or Edwards Team will also sign free agent receiver Patten By Patrick McManamon Beacon Journal columnist DANA POINT, Calif.: The Browns have not "shopped" quarterback Brady Quinn or wide receiver Braylon Edwards on the trade market, GM George Kokinis said Monday at the NFL's annual meetings Kokinis sat down during a lunch break and addressed many issues related to the Browns — including trade rumors surrounding Quinn and Edwards. Asked specifically if he had shopped Quinn and Edwards, Kokinis said no. He did say the team will sign free agent receiver David Patten soon. Patten fits a category of other free agent signings, which bring experienced veterans who can provide leadership, Kokinis said. Patten played for the Browns in 2000. Regarding trades, Kokinis said he had talked with Giants GM Jerry Reese at the scouting combine about his team's roster, but said he had no specific talks about trading Edwards to New York. He said he expects Quinn and Derek Anderson to be on the team come training camp, and he's eager to see which one adapts best to the new offense. The team will await legal results on the status of wide receiver Donte Stallworth before making a decision his status. Stallworth hit and killed a pedestrian on Miami Beach while driving his Bentley; results of blood tests taken on Stallworth at the scene have yet to be released. Kokinis said the Browns let him return to the team last week because it provided him some stability. Finally, Kokinis said the disagreement with defensive tackle Shaun Rogers is on the way toward working itself out, and he said Rogers would fulfill all the requirements of his contract. That sounds like Rogers will be at the mandatory minicamps, but might miss the remainder of the voluntary offseason workout program. Kokinis said he did not demand Rogers lose weight, that Rogers dominated at his weight last season. He indicated the team's strength coach might have suggester Rogers lose weight, but no demand was made from Kokinis. More from this interview during the day on McManamon's blog and in Tuesday's Akron Beacon Journal.

Well, no reason to worry about Quinn's arm strength next season now, we aren't bringing in anyone that can run a 15 yard route anyway.

And he had only 11 catches last year. I'm really trying to keep the the faith here, but I just keep saying "WTF was that signing about?" They have yet to sign an impact player or a game changer. I understand the need to fill the bottom end of the roster, but this is getting ridiculous. This feels like '99 when we were just signing guys to have enough to fill out a roster. I just don't get it!!!!

Excellent move by the front office regardless if Braylon remains a Brown or not. Stallworth's future is still unknown at this point so we can't really count on him as of now.

I want to give BE the benefit of the doubt with a year under EM.
At least if he was traded to the G's we wouldn't have the haunt factor.
Manningham is YOUNG comparatively. Wouldn't be a bad pickup,....

Well, I can think of several ways to describe picking up a 35 year old WR but excellent move wouldn't necessarily be one of them.
Hell, a couple years older and it might as well be General Patton.

Manningham's 5'11" and 183, he's caught 4 (count'em) four total passes in the NFL. He's a third rounder out of Michigan with past drug problems and he scored a whopping "6" on the wonderlic's.
Yeah boy, lets bring this wreck into the club, that'll make us better.

The guy just stated that he's not trading BE and yet the speculation continues. IMO it would be foolish to trade Edwards at this point. With disiplined coaching and this being a contract year, I expect him to produce big time. The guy has had to do some soul searching after last season, I think he will rebound.
Also, I like the Patten signing. He's got some years on him, but he has always been a good reciever. He could fill the void left in the tutoring department when JJ left. I see him as a dependable slot reciever, and a very good depth signing.
It also looks like the truth is coming out about Rogers. The press said Mangini told him to lose weight or not show up at camp, guess this proves they were just making something out of nothing.
I like the way Kokinis operates. no fluff. Short and to the point answers. I got a feeling the draft is going to be a good one. We have some nice depth players now, if he hits on the first three picks, things could be looking up.

To the majority of us college doesn't matter. But there will always be a few that think something minor is big. Unfortunately, because these people are the loudest, most people assume that is the opinion of the entire group.
I would root for a Brown regardless of whether he's from Michigan, Notre Dame, or Xavier (who doesn't even have a football team). Despite Braylon's issues, both on and off the field, I have never stopped rooting for him, because if he does well, the Browns do well. And that's all I care about.

I am a Michigan fan but when it comes to the Browns i dont care one bit about college. I wouldnt mind getting Wells, and Robo on this team...i think Wells would do great, and Robo would be a great number 3 wr. possibly moving to the number 2 spot behind edwards.

I made a similar statement about Thom Darden,...good job Tubby.
We probably won't even look at Wells. Thusly he will become the next Jim Brown.

Trading BE would be a disaster.....you think our "O" is in dire straits now, see what happens if we lose our #1 WR.....even if we do get a 1st round pick for him....I don't think any of the WR's in the draft are as good as him...just my opinion though.....I don't think I could stomach having Steptoe, Cribbs, Patten, and a rookie as our WR core....but, I guess ya never know....funnier things have happened....

He woulda scored an "8" but on the top of the form he couldn't spell "Manningham."
Get Edwards the Hell out of here while he's still worth a bunch. He was handed the entire team by Savage and Crennel and STILL fell apart emotionally. How do we all believe he's going to act now that he's NOT the face of the franchise?

So we release a 33 year old receiver with injuries and sign a 34 year old not even 6'0 tall receiver with injuries...must be to take Stallworths place. I don't get it. I would prefer a young guy with upside...maybe the self proclaimed greatest receiver in the draft is still available..yuk

I think JJ's injuries were worse than many think. I doubt he plays this year, or ever again.
Patten was cheaper, and will probably have the same effect. JJ was good, but at this point I doubt highly he would be as effective as he was.

forgot to add that Patten did catch 53 balls in 2007. Part of the reason Patten lost catches and looks was because of the emergence of Lance Moore.
We just added a guy who's going to give us a shot filling the slot position, but stands a better shot at being the 4th or 5th receiver.
Patten is a short-term band-aid. Nothing more. He's a role-player that isn't being brought in to be a big contributor.

I smell some bullcrap coming out of the Brownies camp!!The Browns Confirm Trade Rumors Surrounding Braylon Edwards Posted: Mar 23, 2009 5:16 PM EDT Updated: Mar 23, 2009 5:20 PM EDT Kokinis Confirms Trade Talks With The Giants Berea - Browns general manager George Kokinis said he did indeed talk to the New York Giants about trading Pro Bowl wide receiver Braylon Edwards. However, Kokinis says nothing ever really materialized. The team has already traded Pro Bowl tight end Kellen Winslow to Tampa Bay in February. The team is thin at receiver with the unknown status of Donte Stallworth, who hit and killed a man with his Bentley in Miami earlier this month. Also, Joe Jurevicius was cut after missing last season with a knee injury. http://www.woio.com/global/story.asp?s=10056584First deny, then admitt....how very Josh Mcdaniel of him...

If we are playing stop gap at receiver, why not at least take a chance on a younger, possibly break out receiver instead of a well past prime vet?
Hank Baskett comes to mind.......except I think he did resign with Philly

There's a difference between "shopping" and "talking." If somebody calls and says "Hey, is Braylon available?" you want him to slam down the phone? Then he might miss the "for three first round picks" part!

Toad, who is going to give us what Braylon is worth knowing that they only get him for one year, and coming off the season he had last year? Answer: nobody.
