My uncle had a heart attack last week and had triple bypass surgery this morning. The surgery is over but he hasn't awakened from the anesthesia yet and he runs a high risk of stroke over the next 24 hours because there was so much plaque.

He was supposed to have woken up by now but he hasn't and we're afraid it's a stroke.

I hardly ever respond on this site, and usually watch only, but for your uncle you have my serious prayers.

I offer my prayers to your uncle and the rest of your family.

UPDATE: They're putting him in a hospital-induced coma for the next 48 hours and cooling his body to 91 degrees, so when it's time to wake him up there's minimal risk of brain damage.

Not sure what to make of it. He may be my uncle but he's an old man (my mom's half-sister aka my aunt was already married to him when my mom was born) with emphysema.

UPDATE:
Well, one of my other uncles was just at the hospital and he happened to be there when the doctor came by, so he got to talk to him himself. He was very surprised that the doctor still seems to hold out a great deal of hope for a pretty good recovery. All is definitely not lost, yet. The next 12 to 18 hours will tell the story. He continues to try to open his eyes, and move a little, no real consciousness yet. The docs would like him to be progressing better, faster, but it seems this is still within the realm of potential recovery. Tomorrow we should know more.

UPDATE:

He has not regained consciousness. Now that they have stopped all the pain medication, he is thrashing in pain and coughing, demonstrating the ability to feel pain and to move, which I suppose could be considered good, but without consciousness, it doesn't mean much. They took him down for a brain scan, which showed that there was no bleeding in the brain. But, that does not rule out a stroke or brain damage. The carotid artery could have been blocked, preventing oxygen from getting to his brain. That would not show up on the brain scan. They want to do an MRI but they can't right now because he has an external pacemaker. They have to wait until the heart stabilizes enough to remove the external pacemaker to do the MRI. At each critical point, we seem to be taking bad turns.

Sorry to hear that Ammo. Hopefully things will improve in time.
