One crime, one punishment, regardless of your status, income level or profession. That is why statues of Justice are blindfolded and hold a balance, and a sword.

You don't think prior criminal history should have anything to do with it? Or disposition? Cooperation?

The way I look at it...Donte Stallworth is not a danger to society. He doesn't need to be locked away. He made a very poor choice, and a tragic accident occurred as a result.

I think prison/jail should be reserved for those who can't function in a civil society, who show no remorse for their actions and exhibit personality disorders. I wouldn't classify Stallworth as possessing any of those traits. Jailing him would amount to little more than a waste of taxpayer money. We imprison far too many people in this country, simply because it's a knee-jerk reaction -- 'Oh, they need to be punished.'

I do agree with you that justice revolves around money...and it shouldn't. But in this particular situation.... I think his pay garnishments and community service do more for our society and his own rehabilitation than locking him up.

You are only looking at the blindfold, not the scales. You have to weigh everything about the circumstances, not just crime = mandatory sentence. The world doesn't operate like that. That's why judges have discretion.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth, who pleaded guilty Tuesday for killing a pedestrian while driving drunk in Florida, has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL.

The suspension is effective immediately, the league announced in a news release Thursday afternoon.

"The conduct reflected in your guilty plea resulted in the tragic loss of life and was inexcusable," commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "While the criminal justice system has determined the legal consequences of this incident, it is my responsibility as NFL Commissioner to determine appropriate league discipline for your actions, which have caused irreparable harm to the victim and his family, your club, your fellow players and the NFL."

So, he's suspended.....but Rog can't decide how long. How about think about it a little longer then?

it makes sense and is seems SOP for Mr. Goodell. he staves off the media declarations for a quick resolution by suspending him but leaves open how long it will be (so a mostly passive action).

we will next get stories coming out that Donte is going to meet with Roger and they will go through the whole process of determining the length.

Here's what I think is going to happen.

Goodell will use the precedent set with Michael Vick and won't even take the case up until after Stallworth is released from custody (i.e. house arrest). That's 2 years. Then he's looking at suspensions both from the substance abuse policy and the personal conduct policy.

Personally, I don't see Donte playing NFL football, or even having the opportunity to do so, until 2012.

Ah, you might be right, but I doubt it.

I see him playing yet this year.

Maybe, I don't know.

I just don't see Goodell going out of his way to let a player on house arrest play in the NFL. He has stated that he won't take up Vick's case until he is done with house arrest, and I can see him doing the same thing with Donte. Yes, the cases are completely different, but they are the same/similar in one regard-- they both did a great deal of harm to the shield/integrity of the NFL, and that is what Goodell is most concerned with.

Just speculating here. I don't see him playing this year though, one way or another.

Hmm.. how bout that..

20 years out of my butt huh?

Yeah, out of your butt.

You said "if it were me."

If it were you, it would be in a Ford Escort in Columbus, not in a Bentley in Miami.......
