Chicago Bears trying to sign tackle Orlando Pace
By Vaughn McClure | Tribune reporter April 1, 2009
The Bears have made signing Orlando Pace a priority and intend to leave him at left tackle if he joins the team, according to an NFL source.

Pace, who played 12 seasons with the St. Louis Rams before becoming a salary-cap casualty last month, visited Halas Hall on Monday. Agent Kennard McGuire said Pace "had a very good and productive" visit.

McGuire declined to discuss specifics in relation to a contract offer. Pace reportedly has an offer from Baltimore.

If Pace signs, the Bears probably would start him at left tackle and shift Chris Williams to the right side. Pace was selected to seven Pro Bowls at left tackle. He likely would have been the Rams' starting left tackle in 2009 had they not opted to save $6 million in cap space.

Pace only fits one of the two criteria for this regime to sign him. He is old, but not cheap.

So much for Shaffer.

Poor guy! I know he isn't the greatest tackle but twice in a row the team that signs him brings in a starter ahead of him.

Honestly...I always thought Shaffer's best position would be Center. If he could master the snap and Shotgun. JMHO otherwise he's a bandaid or a backup...a little better than Stokes cause he has more power and could be nasty if he chose to.

JMHO

Its a done deal

ESPN's Michael Smith reports the Bears have agreed to terms with OT Orlando Pace.

A busy day at Bears headquarters, as they now have added protection for their new franchise quarterback. Pace is slated to start at left tackle, with Chris Williams moving to right tackle and Kevin Shaffer now a swingman.

Shaffer doesn't look so bad as a backup. But looking at Pace the last couple of years, it seem that Shaffer will start a few games.

No, he doesn't look bad as a backup. But I'm guessing he signed there to start. That's gone, and camp didn't start yet.
