And my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong) is that there there is no franchise tag next year, so when BE's contract is up, he's as good as gone.

You are wrong.

If the CBA is not hammered out there is an ADDITIONAL FRANCHISE TAG to be used by each team. Each team would have 3 total tags at their disposal........

Correction...2 tags. Currently teams can use a franchise or transition tag....next year they could potentially use a franchise and transition tag or 2 transition tags.

EErie thought, No Logo (or Erie as case may be). Reminds me of a Browns game this past season when the boil burst with Brayin' Edwards dropping them one after another, and they kept slinging them at him. REALLY ran up his incompletion total that day to become a bona fide NFL loss leader. Trade him or fine him 1% of his contract for each dropped ball so he can buy his replacement.

I remember that game... Derek Anderson was put back into the game b/c Brady Quinn wasn't getting it done... And Braylon KEPT dropping them...

I remember I posted saying Anderson was intentionally doing it to mess up Edwards career, lol. Braylon messed up Anderson's career, so now vice versa.. lol..

When it counted, edwards quit in that game. That game is on him more then Anderson.

We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

edit. I missed the fact that shep had corrected the franchise tag information, and i deleted the original post

back on topic.

Honestly I do not think that there is any chance BE makes it our the door without the browns getting compensation.

If he is honestly not willing to sign an extension with the browns, then I do not care when we trade him. We just need to make sure that we get the best impact for the team that we can, whether that is this year or next year.

Bengals | C. Johnson could be traded

Jason Cole, of Yahoo! Sports, reports Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown could be willing to trade WR Chad Johnson, according to two sources. According to a source, QB Carson Palmer was told in March that a deal involving Johnson could come before the NFL Draft.

I'm sure they would much rather have Edwards, very similar receivers and Edwards is much much younger and comes with less baggage.

Thanks for the clarification, Shep. I should have looked harder...

That changes my opinion. I'm still fine with trading BE this year, but my demands are steeper. We can still tag him next year and get something for him.

However, the coaching staff should still feel him out. If he's not going to be a positive influence in the lockerroom, I'd look to move him.

Go Browns!!

We'll see.

If they Giants did indeed offer a 1st and a 3rd for Edwards, and Kokinis rejected it, then we have 2 things going on:

1. We're too desperate at that position to give up a big play receiver like Braylon,

or

B. We're raping them for everything we can leading up to the draft.

link to the possible rejection

Exactly....Why would we trade Edwards ?....With his known baggage IMO his market value is struggling to mantain its current....Unless we are blown away by an offer IMO Edwards stays....What worries me is that our new Front Office will take a QB at # 5 Stafford or Sanchez ...Since Mangini isn 't sold on either Anderson or Quinn we have a competition , name our starter , trade the other guy and go with a Rookie Backup QB , and a veteran as 3rd string....** Or he trades that QB & 1 of our QBs to gain additional Draft picks....and signs a veteran Backup QB....

If Mangini takes a QB at #5, with all our other issues, that will be the day I start looking forward to our next head coach.

Burress turned down $29.5 million offer from Giants
Posted: April 4th, 2009 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: New York Giants, Plaxico Burress

Plaxico Burress, who was released by the Giants on Friday, apparently walked away from a good deal offered by the team before it cut ties with the wide receiver.

Burress had the chance to earn $29.5 million over the remainder of his contract, but he turned it down because he no longer wanted to be a Giant, The Newark Star-Ledger reports:

According to someone familiar with the negotiations, the team offered Burress the chance to earn all of the money that was written into his contract from here on out. All he had to do was end his fight for the money he forfeited over the last four weeks of last season (base salary, roster bonus and signing bonus) during which he was suspended for “conduct detrimental to the team” and start playing by their rules.
Burress said no to the deal, so the Giants said no to his further employment with the team.

Burress is just another of a long list of me first players. He did it to Pittsburgh and he's doing it again with New York. The guys a jerk who thinks he's above it all. Another team will sign him, he does have the talent, and in a few years when he isn't the talk of the town he will want out again..

Police: Plax cursed out cop during traffic stopby James Fanelli, New York Post

April 5, 2009

At least this time Plaxico Burress was only shooting from the lip.

The pistol-packing punk fired a string of profanities at a deputy sheriff two weeks ago after he was stopped for erratic driving in Florida, police said.

"(Expletive) you! You're going to be in a lot of trouble. I know the sheriff personally," the receiver raged at Broward County Deputy Sheriff Donald Harris during the March 18 traffic stop, police said.

The embattled gridder (right) -- who was released by the Giants on Friday and faces 3½ years in prison on a gun-possession charge after shooting himself in the leg at a Manhattan nightclub on Nov. 29 -- followed every question and command with a "(Expletive) you," according to the citation.

It appears Burress' driving is as wild as his shooting; the ticket was his fifth driving infraction in Florida in the past month alone.

In the March 18 incident near Fort Lauderdale, Burress, 31, was speeding south on I-95 in his black 2008 Toyota Sequoia at 10:30 a.m. when he crossed several lanes of traffic, cutting off vehicles to get on I-595's westbound ramp, police said.

Harris pulled over the car because Burress was driving like "he was going to kill somebody," according to police.

When Officer Harris approached, he couldn't see inside the tinted windows of Burress' SUV, so he opened a door and found the ex-Giant talking on his cellphone.

"(Expletive) you! You can't open my (expletive) door!" Burress barked, police said. That's when Burress issued his boastful threat about knowing Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti.

At one point, Harris asked Burress to get out of his car because of his "violent and aggressive" attitude, police said. The deputy wanted to see if the fuming, 6-foot-5 footballer was carrying a gun. Burress, who wasn't packing, complied. But he wasn't happy about it.

Eventually, Burress, who has a home in nearby Lighthouse Point, returned to his car, snarling, "You're going to hear about this by the end of your shift!"

But Burress was bluffing about his connections. The sheriff has "never met him," a police spokeswoman said.

Burress was hit with a $150 moving violation.

Two weeks earlier, on March 1, Burress was slapped with four violations for driving 60 mph in a 45-mph zone, improper tags, improper lane change and improper window tinting.

Burress' gun-possession case has been adjourned until June 15.

Ocho Cinco is a much different receiver than Edwards. Edwards is bigger, probably as fast, and much more physical in the mold of Plax. I don't think getting Chad Ocho would help the Giants as much as Edwards.

Like i said if a team starts to offer a 1st and a player like Hixon or Reggie Brown I would probably send Edwards.

Go Browns!!

and the idiot gets paid .. BRUTAL .. and this decision may also affect us if we try and go after the bonus we just paid to Donte ..

Plax wins fight for Giants bonus $$;

Alex Marvez
April 6, 2009, 12:44 PM EST

Receiver Plaxico Burress can keep his $1 million bonus, but the Chiefs aren't obligated to pay running back Larry Johnson his guaranteed salary and bonuses over the next two seasons.

That was the ruling NFL Players Association general counsel Richard Berthelsen said Special Master Stephen Burbank issued Monday after the union's grievance hearing last week.

Burbank ruled bonus money already earned cannot be forfeited by a player, meaning the Giants cannot dock Burress $1 million he earned as part of a new contract he signed in August, Berthelsen said.

As for Johnson, Burbank ruled that if the Chiefs cut him, they do not have to pay him a $3.5 million guaranteed salary next season because he breached his contract after being suspended last season, Berthelsen said.

Burress, who was released by the Giants last week, was charged with felony gun possession after he accidentally shot himself in November. That case has been adjourned until June 15 as Burress' attorneys and prosecutors continue to discuss a potential plea deal.

According to Burress' agent, multiple teams have already asked about the wide receiver.

"There are several teams interest in signing (Burress)," Drew Rosenhaus said in an email to FOXSports.com. "My discussions with them are ongoing."

The Giants suspended Burress, who also was fined and finished the season on the team's non-football injury list. The union filed a separate grievance over what it termed excessive punishment by the Giants. His suspension cost him more than $800,000 in salary. The team also fined him more than $200,000, his single-game salary.

It's a potentially precedent-setting decision that could determine whether NFL teams can override guarantees negotiated into contracts should a player violate team or league rules. Unlike North America's three other major professional sports leagues, NFL contracts are not guaranteed if a player is released unless those terms were negotiated into the deal.

It's also a decision that might affect how the Cleveland Browns handle their contract with receiver Donte Stallworth, who faces charges that he was driving drunk when he killed a pedestrian last month in Miami.

Stallworth was due a $4.5 million roster bonus on March 13, the day before the accident. Though Stallworth remains on the Browns' roster, it's not clear whether the team paid the bonus.

We're not going after his roster bonus. Vick got to keep his. Plax keeps his. Donte will keep his.

We may not like it but a roster bonus is just that.....a bonus for being on the roster. Since all these guys were on the roster they get their moolah.

Personally, BE hasn't proved his worth to me. He has potential but hasn't proved it yet.
so he goes to NYG and flourishes, not the first time that has happened.

since defense wins championships I'd rather put my money on them.

We need to get or build a shutdown defense. Period

Normally, I would agree with you on that.....but since we have absolutely no one else to throw to, I just can't see trading BE right now.....I say we try to move one of the QB's and that should give us enough picks for now....we still aren't gonna be very competitive..IMO....but it will be a good start for EM and Co.....I understand that you can't build a team in FA, but I think we could have signed 1 or 2 players that would have helped....

You know, I just don't get everyone's pessimisom (sp? ), I have no idea how competetive we are going to be this yr. I am waiting to see how that draft plays out and who our starting QB will be. Which I believe we will know after the draft because I don't beleive BOTH qb's will be on the roster after the draft.

Let's just say BQ gets the job, we have all seen what a good QB can do for a team. Look at Atlanta and Baltimore last yr., both teams got good QB's and improved dramatically. Can BQ do that for us???? I don't know, but I feel he has a better shot being that he has been in the league for 3 yrs. now. And if it's Anderson, well........I will just hope he can IMPROVE on his season of two yrs. ago.

Are we as good as our 10-6 team of 2 yrs. ago.....NO.
Are we as bad as our 4-12 team last yr.........NO.

We are somewhere in between and a solid QB (note I said solid and not spectacular) along with some improved defense could put us well on our way back to respectable. I expect that improved defense to come to us through the draft and a return to health.
Everyone should remember that Williams played with one arm and one of the Smiths went out early with an achilles injury. A return to health of those two should do wonders for our line.
Plus, I feel that we are going to get some more early picks. For either Anderson or BQ and Edwards, or some compilation of those 3. And with Mangini's past, and Kok's familiarity of the AFC North, I see those extra picks going towards the defense and the O-line. The heart of this division.

I don't know.....maybe I just am wearing orange colored glasses but.......... I just think we will do OK this yr., and may even be in the hunt for the playoffs at the end of the season, and to me, that is what makes it fun.

Don't get me wrong here...I hope we go to the Super Bowl just like everyone else......I think your confusing me giving my honest opinion with "pessimism"....I agree with you on saying that we are not the 10-6 team of 2 years ago.......but saying that we are not as bad as we were last year as of right now......mmmmmm, I'm not so sure....what have we done that has actually made us a better team so far...??? Maybe trade K2....sign a few players to add depth to the roster....???? If we don't figure out our QB issues, and have a GREAT draft, I can't see us doing much better than we did last year......Especially if we trade Braylon.....
