Celebrate! The NFL schedule will be released on Tuesday
By Chris Chase

We're in the midst of a sporting Xanadu. The NCAA championship and baseball's opening day were on Monday, the Masters kicked off this morning and next Tuesday brings us the underrated event on the sports calendar: NFL schedule release day.

At 7 p.m. ET on April 14 the NFL Network will air a two-hour special devoted to the 2009 schedule release. It will be the first time ever that the league will announce its schedule in primetime.

The schedule release has been gaining momentum as a stand-alone event in recent years. A few years ago, the NFL would send out the master schedule without much fanfare. It'd always be a surprise to stumble upon the thrilling news while surfing the internet at work or procrastinating from writing papers in college. But with the NFL Network desperate for live off-season programming since its launch in 2003, heralding the schedule release was a no-brainer.

Part of the reason it's such a great event is that there's not much hype and no set date for the release. Having the date announced five days ahead of time is part of the reason it's so fun. Sure, all football fans would have been looking forward to Tuesday even if the date was set back in December, but getting the mid-day surprise today that the schedule will be out in less than a week is sort of like finding a present on Christmas night that was hiding behind the tree.

The opening week primetime games and the three Thanksgiving match ups were announced last month. The other 249 dates and times will be announced in the special.

You aint kiddin'. The NFL is a juggernaut.

On a side note, is it me, or has this felt like the longest wait for the NFL Draft EVER?

It's you. I remember the wait from '96 to '99. That was a very long wait.

Isn't that the truth.

It isn't as important to me as it was in the past when I was on a set schedule 90 days out, a filling schedule 4-5 months out, and a forming schedule 6-7 months out.

It was frustrating waiting for that schedule so I could start blocking out long weekends to get to 4-5 games..

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

I wish we got the Thanksgiving game, but they already announced those 3 games. Lions play the Packers...

I think it would be a whole lot more fun if both franchises could actually play some football,...like if they were both their division leaders, etc.

If they're going to leave them in Detroit or Dallas, I'd just as soon see them play a division rival, something with "some" possible level of importance.

At least they've added that third night game; helps spread the Turkey wealth.

I'll be puking up my beer if that happens ... especially if our QB on that day stinks it up... the plight of a Browns fan ... it's a nerve racking one.

Just thought I would start a thread on the 2009 Cleveland Browns schedule that will come out tonight at 7:00pm.

A lot of us make plans and adjust our schedules to make certain games, especially the division games.

Also, feel free to discuss non-Browns games that spark some interest.

If I could.. I would start a poll, and ask how many primetime games the Browns will get this season... My guess... 1... lol... That may be a good thing though.

And before it is released? Anybody hope for certain matchups at certain times of the season?

I hope we get the Steelers EARLY.. Yes Early!! I want the Browns to be the team that puts their faces in the mud first.

Who ever gets the schedule first... post it here and discuss...

Sorry, love the optimism but I don't want the Steelers early. I'd prefer to have the lighter part of our schedule first, hopefully get a win or 2 and build some confidence.

As for primetime.. if we get 1 I'll be happy, if we get more than 1 I'll be shocked, if we get 0 I'll understand that too.

Yeah I would have to agree I want our easy games first.

There are going to be some new faces and schemes on this team and we need soem time to mesh and build some confidence.

One Prime Time game is all we'll get most likely.

I'd like to see start with some easier teams to get some gelling going on & maybe try to get some early wins. I'm kinda interested to know when the Vikings will be in Cleveland because a good bud of mine is a Vikes fan and we've talked about making the long trip to C-town.

We may get a Sunday Night rivalry game I'm thinking, say Baltimore, but I can't see us getting a MNF game or more than one in primetime.

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Browns will open the 2009 season against the Minnesota Vikings.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Browns have not opened on the road since the franchise returned to the NFL in 1999.

Cleveland is coming off a disappointing 4-12 campaign, finishing last in the AFC North.

The Vikings finished first in the NFC North with a 10-6 record. Minnesota lost to Philadelphia, 26-14, in the first round of the playoffs.

Check back with wkyc.com and Channel 3 News as the rest of the Browns' schedule is announced after 7 p.m.

Nothing like putting our run defense to the task immediately.

Well... Gotta control Peterson... If Peterson kills us week one, other teams will try to run on our defense for the rest of the season....
