Garrett hired as assistant, could still be head coach
ESPN.com news services

The Cowboys have hired Miami Dolphins quarterbacks coach Jason Garrett as their offensive coordinator, and he remains a candidate for Dallas' vacant head coaching position, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Thursday.

The Cowboys confirmed the move Thursday night.

The Cowboys said Garrett's responsibilities and title won't be determined until the head coaching search is complete. The most likely scenario, however, is that Garrett will become the offensive coordinator if he's not the head coach.

"The nature and timing of this hire is unique in that we were dealing with a limited window of time in which to talk to Jason about returning to Dallas," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement.

The Dolphins gave Dallas permission to talk to Garrett, 40, but also told the former quarterback that he had to decide by Thursday if he was going to sign a contract extension. That deadline passed with Garrett still in Texas.

"Jason is someone who is held in high regard s a bright offensive mind throughout the NFL,'' Jones said. "We are grateful to the Dolphins for granting the Cowboys permission to explore this opportunity. Jason will now proceed further in our head coaching search as an in-house candidate."

A source told ESPN's Ed Werder on Wednesday night that team owner Jerry Jones considers Garrett, a former backup to quarterback Troy Aikman, to be one of the most promising offensive coaches in the league and was so determined to bring him back to the Cowboys organization that he would have been added to Bill Parcells' staff had Parcells decided to coach the final year of his contract.

Instead, Parcells stepped down Monday after four seasons with the Cowboys, ending a 19-year coaching tenure that included two Super Bowl champoinships with the New York Giants.

In his first public comments since announcing his retirement, Parcells told New York station WFAN on Thursday that Jones has asked him to remain with the organization for another week to help in the transition of a new head coach. That is, assuming Jones hires one within that period.

San Diego defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, the former head coach at Denver and Buffalo who also had interim stints in New Orleans and Atlanta, is scheduled to interview Friday about the head coaching vacancy.

The Cowboys also plan to talk to San Francisco offensive coordinator Norv Turner, a former head coach, and New Orleans defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs. Both are former Dallas assistants. It wasn't clear when those interviews would take place, but Turner is coaching the Senior Bowl on Saturday.

Garrett spent the last two seasons coaching Miami's quarterbacks. He played for the Cowboys from 1993-99, appearing in 23 games with nine starts. He also played for the Giants, Tampa Bay and Miami. Garrett retired in 2004.

Garrett's father, Jim, was a longtime scout for the Cowboys.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

This really annoys me. The Browns wanted to interview Garrett and were told "no". Why is it that Miami granted permission to Dallas? It seems like that half of the Browns interview requests are denied. Can someone explain this to me?

Anybody else thinking that this guy just didn't want to talk with us - moreso than we couldn't get "approval" to talk w/ him?

Even if he didnt want the job, a guy looking to move up in the ranks takes interviews to get his name out...At the time we asked to speak with him, Miami's HC position was vacant...when Cameron was hired he probably has his mind set on who he wants, thus making Garrett expendible...

My guess would be the Dolphins ownership simply wanted to allow their new HC to evaulate the staff before making any decisions. It could have been the new HC would have wanted to promote Garrett to OC.

Obviously after reviewing the staff, Cam Cameron did not view Garrett as and OC and allowed him to be promoted on another team.

BTW, there was another thread running on the Garrett hiring I believe.

Im guessing Dan Reeves gets into the mix.

Sound like the Boys are grooming Garrett to be the HC sooner than later...and anyone coming in will basically be a LAME DUCK from the get go.....

Reeves could step in...give it that final go...and then walk away in a few years.

Yeah, I was thinking that. I mean, how would it look if he turned us down rather than having the organization turn us down? Let's face it: Good coaches don't want to come here because of the instability and the fact that it's pretty well known around league circles that Cleveland isn't exactly a coach's paradise. We're kinda like that fast food job you left off your resume years ago. It was a good experience, but not exactly gonna get your foot in the door.

What actually makes you think Garrett is a "Good Coach?" Not trying to be an ass but cannot figure out why some posters like yourself would actually want him...

Personally, I am glad that Dolphins declined him an interview to come here and I see it as a good thing to infuse different philosphy when implementing your "systems."

I would like to see us avoid the Dallas/N.E. connection and put together a more rounded staff... Chud is a look in the right direction and I would rather have him than Garrett... JMHO

Pretty sure I never said I wanted him or that he's a good coach. I was just trying to think of why he may not have wanted to come talk to us. I'm sure he thinks of himself as a good coach and if he wants others to do the same, he'll go with a team that will reflect that. Clearly, given our history of churning out coaches who go on to do bigger and better things, our organization does not reflect the potential of the coaches who come here. We're more of a training ground for novice level coaches in this league.

I'm sure it's nothing more than timing,,, Cam Cameron hadn't been hired by Miami yet and perhaps Miami thought they didn't want to lose Garrett until the HC job was filled..

It was like what, 1 or maybe 2 days after Cam was hired that we hired Chud.... Thus eliminating the need for Garrett..

I think there was another guy that we were denied but I can't remember his name off hand..

And today in another article, we asked for permission to meet with Tony Sparano of Dallas, but were denied.. Again, as this article says, the HC search isn't over down there yet... We still might get a chance at him....

Timing,,,I think (hope) that's all it is.

Personally, I think the two worst HC jobs in the NFL would be Oakland and Dallas. Both places have owners who think they are God and try to second guess everything. Anyone who signs on as a HC at either place might as well realize he is, actually, only the Ass't HC.... There isn't enough room for a HC at either place, with the egos of those two owners in the house.

Parcells was very upset that Jones picked up TO. The Tuna didn't want him at all... but was stuck with him because Jones wanted him. If Jones wants to coach, then he should coach... otherwise, let the HC do his job.

Good Luck Garrett... You're going to need it....

"I thought Cameron was named well before we named Chud."

Before yes...believe Maverick stated that. Not Well before as in weeks.

But we asked permission to speak to Garrett as in one of the first moves in our search before anybodies names came up...before Knapp...not too long after Saban left.

As for the maybe no permission was granted cause he told Hizenga to please deny it as he doesn't want anything to do with Cleveland...You never, never burn bridges especially when you are Young n determined and just a QB coach.

Could be but I doubt it. We asked permission well before they hired Cameron.
