Yeah... that's a tough way to end a GREAT game. It was a correct call (Freddy Modin should've known better than to touch that puck -- that was a real brain cramp), but not one the official should be too proud of given the game circumstance and the relatively loose manner in which the rest of the game was officiated. Pretty ticky-tack, IMO (and I'm a Wings fan). Still, Hitch has FINALLY got the Jackets heading in the right direction. They have a franchise goalie in Mason (this is HUGE). He's improved the defense. The Jackets have some bonafide scorers. This is a fun and exciting team to watch.  I can't believe San Jose is choking AGAIN. What is it with those guys?? I think I'll focus on the Hawks-Flames series now that my Wings are moving on. These games have been really good ones so far. There's nothing like playoff hockey!

A lightning strike (in Atlanta) knocked out most of the Pens game last night. It came and went for awhile, didn't really see much of it. Flyers fighting hard to stay in the hunt but the Pens are still the better team.....but it's hockey so who knows?

The Flyers won me a few bucks last night ... but they're going to lose Game 6. I think the Pens are a better, quicker team. Anaheim up 3-1 on San Jose now, and it's doubtful the Sharks will come back from that. I guess we'll see. Rangers/Caps is the only game on the slate tonight.

As a Wings fan, it was nice to see the Blue Jackets actually come out and fight last night. Too many times a team rolls over and dies when down like that (hopefully like the Pistons tonight  ). But the Jackets just aren't ready for a team like the Wings in the playoffs just yet, they will be, but not yet.
Crowded elevators smell different to short people...

Might as well get on my soapbox here and say SHAME ON YOU to every drunken slob who threw their beer bottles and cans on the ice at the end of the Wings/Jackets game last night.
And a standing O to the Jackets and the fans who brought the noise. It was LOUD and I have no voice.

Caps beat Rangers 4-0... N.Y. still leads series 3-2 heading back to D.C. for Game 6.
Ovechkin scored a beautiful goal tonight, the guy is sensational.
Big day Saturday in the NHL...

That was pretty tacky on the fans part. That call had to be made. Modin jumped off the bench and played the puck right in front of the ref with the other player not within sticks reach of the bench.

Lamp saw that goal by Ovechenkin....WOW that was just unreal. Pass to himself a couple of times and one of them between the legs of his opponent. I've enjoyed watching him play and highlights this season. Still like my Penguins and Malkin and Crosby with O a definite top 3 player in my book.
That being said....Go Pens! 3pm game today and I won't be able to see it due to limited cable chanels right now.

I don't think it was Modin's fault though, jfanent: he has to play the puck. A guy on the ice can't be worried about whether the line change is being made correctly. Bad luck, more than anything.

Been thinking about the scale of talent that is out there and the young guns coming up and making a name for themselves. Not many but those 3 stand out like nobodies business. I kinda feel the same way....flyers are gonna get clipped today. You know with the Pens having been to the Cup last season and getting beat by my other favorite team the Wings, they are so hungry to show everyone they have what it takes to win it all. That gool was wicked sweet. I love seeing goals like that because when they happen real time you sit there going WTF how did he score. Then when you see the slow motion replay you have to pick your jaw off the ground. The stick work and his skating are what have him heads above the rest, just like Crosby and Malkin. (yeah lamp a chick that knows hockey hehe  )

Oh yeah, those are the best too. Especially during playoffs cuz it seems that the fights are more intense then than during the regular season. Oh and when the guys get REALLY REALLY p/o'd and won't stop. I remember back in the day the fans would go to a fight and a hockey game would break out

Philly imploded big time. Three-goal lead vanished in an elimination game.... geez, Pittsburgh looked good in that series.
I see San Jose extended their series by beating the Ducks... I didn't watch any of the games last night but the Blackhawks must have jumped all over Calgary early, winning 5-1.

it was ugly early in the hawks game. kiprusoff must have been out partying the night before, he was bad. the whole team stunk.
it was 3-0 before you blinked.
i'd love to see the sharks push that thing to 7.... big goal last night, ugly goal, the way you gotta get it done. glad to see jumbo joe getting physical. pushing people around.

Ever notice a lot of OT goals in playoffs are ugly goals?
IMO, it stems from the old adage about OT: keep throwing pucks at the net and hope for a lucky bounce off somebody's rear end or a skate or something.

it's either one of those like we saw last night, or a miracle shot from the blue line that goes through about 5 people without touching anything but net.
i'm kinda dissapointed that the playoffs haven't produced any multiple overtime games yet, those are the best.

oh they'll happen sooner or later... double OTs are alright, anything longer can lead to boring hockey because they get tired & conservative. Bet you love the goals that get by you cuz they went through a maze of sticks and legs, eh?

those are tough, there's really very little you can do, just make yourself look as big as possible, what i hate is when the puck is stuck between a bunch of feet with guys tangled up, they aren't even looking at the puck but trying to play the body, it's a non checking league, play the puck.
although i love pushing people around in my crease, that never gets old, lolz

hey, we're gonna get some game 7's..
carolina and nj are goin 7 unless the devils put together a miraculous comeback, as of right now they have absolutely nothing up front.
the sharks could push it to a game 7 with a win in the pond tomorrow...
i think calgary and chicago are goin 7, a game 7 at the uc would be awesome, the place has been electric the entire series...
and the rangers and caps are already set for a game 7 in washington. tons of drama with torts getting a game suspension for his meltdown the other night...
should be an awesome week in the nhl. with no cavs for at least a week, im gonna be watching.

I'm watching the N.J.-Carolina game right now, 4-0 Canes. Carolina has outplayed them since I started watching in the 2nd. IF San Jose gets by Anaheim after being down 3-1, that could really give them momentum and confidence.

Congrats to the Blackhawks, they just finished off Calgary tonight with a 4-1 win. They were the better team this series.
I know a few good diehard Hawks fans and they deserve to see their team have success. I'll root for them now the rest of the way... I'm a Leafs fans but fondly remember the old Chicago Stadium with those loud fans and the pipe organ. They're young, talented and a fun team to watch.

Does the division winner still take precedence on the re-seed? or will Chicago (104 pts) get home ice against Vancouver (100 pts) if San Jose goes down? Congrats to the Hawks! I was at game 5 and it was a blast!

I don't think they have the schedule out yet, but Vancouver has home ice advantage in the next series against Chicago. San Jose was eliminated last night by Anaheim, BTW.

That would make the Red Wings and Ducks the other series. That could be interesting. The Ducks are a much more physical team and they could give Detroit some trouble. Hiller has been really good in goal too.
Wings took the season series 3-1. However, all but one of these games were decided by a goal (one in OT). Should be a great series. I hope Detroit is ready for it (I'm just glad the Wings had to battle the Jackets for Game 4 -- if they had rolled C-Bus all four games, I'd be even more concerned).

The Flames 'D' was hurting big time... it's a minor miracle they won two games... Here's part of a story from the Canadian Press Quote:
... The veil held over the Flames injuries through the series was lifted after Monday's game, revealing that defenceman Dion Phaneuf was a scratch for Game 6 because of broken ribs he suffered getting checked by Chicago's Troy Brouwer in Game 5.
Defenceman Cory Sarich played on a fractured foot and both of Daymond Langkow's hands were not fully functional. The Flames were without shutdown defenceman Robyn Regehr (knee) for the entire series. Rene Bourque's ankle that kept him out of the final 24 games of the regular season wasn't fully healed either.
Chicago was the healthier team through the series as they iced the same lineup every game with the exception of substituting Colin Fraser in for Kane in Game 3.
But to dwell on the Flames injury woes would take away from the Blackhawks' poise, tenacity and speed in this series.
The Blackhawks had 10 players with a combined 309 playoff games between them compared to Calgary's 19 players with 764 post-season games.
They beat Calgary in the faceoff circle in five of the six games and outscored them 10-5 in second periods.
They fought back from one- and two-goal deficits in the first two games of the series to win them at home. After losing two in Calgary, Chicago dominated the Flames in a 5-1 victory in Game 5.

the hawks really showed up in those last 2 games. they were flat out the better team.
they played physical, tough hockey. khabibulin was unstoppable...
if they play like that, they should beat vancouver and could potentially give the red wings some trouble. if they play physical, and defend, they still have the firepower up front to put on the wings.
that's the thing about detroit. during the year their defensive numbers were atrocious, but they gear up in the playoffs, and they make it very easy on their goaltender.
all their forwards backcheck, they all defend. and once they clamp that down it's just a matter of time before you're down 2 or 3. and once you're down against those guys, it's over.
you have to jump on the wings to beat them, you aren't making comebacks against them. they are a team built on getting a lead and keeping it. but in recent history, they have had trouble playing from behind in the playoffs.

I don't think they'll beat Vancouver, but I didn't think they'd beat Calgary, either.  Vancouver IMO has a great goalie in Luongo (Kiprisoff was ordinary versus 'Hawks), and they have solid veteran bangers and enough skill players. Having said that, had I known how dinged up the Flames' defensemen were, I would have picked Chicago to win.

vancouver is easily the better team (when compared to calgary)
i think the flames provide more firepower, iginla, camilleri, jokinen. phaneuf has a laser from the blue line...
but vancouver is tougher physically, they are more disciplined. and i agree, luongo is an absolute wall.
kipper's play has really dwindled the last few years.
roberto luongo is a big guy, all legs, and tracks a puck better than anyone in the league.
he doesn't stray too far out of his crease other, but when you have his size, you don't need to. great player.
if the hawks play as physical and tough as they did in games 5 and 6, and nikolai plays like he did, i have the hawks winning. if they revert back to trying to be a cute team that doesn't wanna fight on the boards, and chip and chase, then it's vancouver.

Round 1 is in the books. Washington completed the comeback against the Rangers last night, after being down 3-1 in the series. Also, the Devils led by a goal with under two minutes left in Game 7 against the 'Canes, but gave up two quick goals and BAM!! season over. Stunning way to end a series. So we have: Eastern Conference: Boston/Carolina Washington/Pittsburgh Western Conference Detroit/Anaheim Vancouver/Chicago My picks: East winners: Boston, Pittsburgh Boston will be too physical for Carolina, who just get through a draining series with NJ. It's Boston's time now. The other series should be fun. There's a good rivalry going between Sidney Crosby and Ovechkin. Pittsburgh got hot at the end of the regular season & I think last year's trip to the Final was good experience for them, & is starting to pay off now. West winners: Vancouver, Detroit Detroit is too good for Anaheim, they dominate puck possession and no way in hell Anaheim can match them. I think the series will be over in six, maybe even five. Sorry lebron, , but I believe Vancouver's goaltending will be the difference against the 'Hawks. Should be a good series though (and to be honest, I wouldn't be shocked if Chicago beat them). What are everyone's thoughts on the next round?

although it will be touted as crosby/ovechkin, it should really be malkin/ovechkin. the two don't like each other and it dates back to their days in russia. i know it seems like they kissed and made up at all star weekend, but i have a feeling this will be a very heated series. the nhl has to love that it's two most popular players are facing off.
as far as carolina boston, you gotta think boston takes this one pretty easily. too much defense. the goaltending matchup is a good one though, tim thomas v cam ward.
as far as the west goes. anaheim and detroit is an interesting matchup. anaheim shocked them back in 2003, and maybe they could give them fits. they are a physical team with big forwards. their goaltender (hiller) is playing out of his mind. but i wonder how much of their moving on was them being that good or san jose spitting the bit, again.
vancouver and chicago will probably be the best overall series. 2 elite goaltenders. the hawks have gotten tougher in a series. they took huge strides in becoming a contender. the canucks played almost as well as anyone the last month and a half, and they obviously carried it into the finals. 4 game sweep where i think they only gave up 5 goals to st. louis. they're going to be a tough out for pretty much anyone they play.

In the East, I think Boston and Pittsburgh will advance. The west is a tad harder to predict, but I'm thinking it will be the Wings vs. the Blackhawks. Gimme that ole' time Original Six hockey!

well, since my original prediction went down the toilet, i'll redo mine..
my eastern conference predictions will remian the same, i still have boston out of the east, with pittsburgh over washington, and the pens lose to the b's
in the west, i'm going to boldy take the chicago blackhawks over the vancouver canucks. and i have the red wings over the ducks
in the west final, i will take detroit over chicago in 7 games.
boston v detroit for the cup, old time hockey

Well, I was a shameful 4-4 in the first round. I'm feeling smarter now.  Boston, Pittsburgh with Boston to the finals. Detroit, Chicago with the Wings advancing. Wings take the cup.
