Nah... There wasn't anything there that warranted that. Malkin basically jumped Zetterburg. He had no choice but to defend himself (which he ended up doing pretty well, actually). If anything, I'd say Malkin did it to try and fire his squad up a bit heading back to The Pitts. I doubt it will amount to much. Neither of those guys are fighters really, so mostly I think they'll just get razzed for it.

I like the instigator rule. The officials don't abuse it and it really has stopped alot of the really stupid stuff that used to go on. As I said, I'm glad the NHL waived the suspension that normally goes with the call. The teams got the message they needed to receive without ruining what still might end up being a terrific Cup final.

A couple of Penguins were a little frustrated... things got a bit carried away but no real harm. Nothing wrong with some animosity... it's the Stanley Cup final. Hockey is an emotional game.

I have mixed feelings about the instigator rule. It does protect us from morons starting a big scrap and beating up non-fighters for example, on the other hand it handcuffs players somewhat in terms of being able to do some "police work" and to get some payback if you think it's warranted.
Pitt. got screwed on the goal that gave Detroit a 2-1 lead... I'd be frustrated too, if I were them.

yup.

for every 20 hockey fights you see, maybe 3 of them are legitimate.

i don't think people who have never laced em up have any idea how hard it is to fight on skates, how much it takes out of you, how much you have already had taken out of you from playing the game prior to dropping them.

I played Juniors for several years. Trust me, there are PLENTY of ways to get the "police work" done without dropping the gloves. In fact, I would say that your better players have mastered this art.

How did the Pens get screwed on that play? Hossa was going for the puck. Dupuis has to (1) hang onto his stick and (2) not QUIT on the play and hold his arms out like a diva after he loses his stick. Plus, Malkin shouldn't have run Holstrom in the crease where, of course, he's going to fall into Fluery. Dumb. They deserved to get scored on there.

you can argue that call, and i kinda think it was a bad call, but this series has been all detroit.

it may not be one of those chicago bulls 6 in 8 years dynasties, but over the last 12 years, they have dominated hockey.

their structure is unbelievable too. they have all these young guys locked up for quite some time.

babcock seems to be the perfect guy, although i think a lot of coaches would succeed with this cast.

I've seen that called a penalty a hundred times, it should have been called. I'm not saying Detroit didn't deserve to win, but it certainly had an impact on the rest of the game.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this. MAYBE that call gets made during the regular season, but not in the playoffs (and CERTAINLY not in the finals). The officials are letting the guys play and that's exactly how it should be, IMO.

If Dupuis doesn't quit on that play, maybe the Wings don't score. If Malkin doesn't run Holstrom into Fluery, maybe the Wings don't score. To blame that goal on a non-call is, IMO, silly. You have to play through that stuff. Even if you THINK its a bad call, you have to keep going. Instead, the Pens got disorganized in their defensive zone and the Wings made them pay. ::shrug::

we'll have to disagree, yes... although I see your point... to an extent. haha... And don't get me wrong the Wings deserve to be up 2-0, IMO.

It's all good lamp...

Honestly, I think the Pens will re-group and win tomorrow night. I don't know if they'll be able to take two in a row though (particularly if the Wings get Draper and/or Datsyuk back for Game 4). I think even Babcock said that the Wings feel pretty fortunate to be up 2-0 because they haven't really played their best hockey in this series yet.

Should be fun!

What I found interesting is that Malkin got that instigator call, and the Ducks got nothing when their entire team jumped Datsyuk and Rafalski as the horn sounded in game 6. They were even yelling, "we're gonna get you, Pavel" in the faceoff circle just before.

Should be an interesting game tonight. I fully expect the Pens to come out flying and get an early lead. This time, I think they'll be able to hang onto it and take Game 3.

Well now you wings fans know how we pens fans felt... It was your game of missed oppurtunities posts... non-calls, etc... here's to hoping more of the same this Saturday.

BS. Twenty plus seconds with 6 attackers and no call isn't ANYTHING like what happened in Detroit. Not even close. That was horrible and things just went downhill from there.

Congrats to the Pens though. They took advantage of the opportunties they were given and held on to win. Mission accomplished. On to Game 4.

What is it with Pittsburgh teams and gift-wrapped games?? They always seem to get them when they really need them.

I thought the Wings played as well or better tonight than the 1rst two games. Fewer offensive zone turnovers, Crosby was a non-factor once again, Osgood made some great saves. Pittsburgh took advantage of their breaks for a change, and Detroit didn't get many.

I think the officiating throughout these playoffs has been horribly inconsistent.... not just in the Detroit series', and not against any particular team. It seems that every ref has their own idea of how to interpret the rulebook and even that changes as the game goes on.

when this series is over, there's gonna be a gigantic part of me missing.

no hockey, no cavs, and only a crappy indians team to follow.

ooh, and soon enough it'll be an even crappier browns team getting ready for another lovely season.

I think the NHL season is three weeks or a month too long. It's hard to miss it when it's always around .
If the Penguins can pull out a win Thursday night, we have a whole new series.
BTW, Crosby hasn't gotten a lot of points - just one assist in three games - but he's always buzzing around and dangerous.

good things happen when you play around the crease.

i know the guy takes a lot of flack, but he plays in an area that a lot of "superstars" wouldn't.

Crosby got the monkey off his back and the penguins made the Wings pay for their miscues. Detroit outshot them but didn't convert. Osgood let in some soft goals. These playoffs are producing some great games...I don't remember being on the edge of my seat like this for a long time. There's no way I can watch baseball either after that kind of excitement (unless my son's playing).

I was busy last night and missed this one. Sounds like it was another good one (although not so much for us Wings fans )

LBJ... I agree. This has the look and feel of a 7-game series and it doesn't get any better than that for the Cup Finals.

Pressure is back on Detroit and the Pens have all kinds of momentum now. Getting Datsyuk back for Game 5 would be HUGE for the Wings if he can do it.

for as good as datsuyk has been, he really hasnn't done much leading up to the finals... still, he's one of their best guys and it couldn't hurt.

i still think detroit wins, but i can't wait to watch game 5. and see if this young pittsburgh squad can steal it. fleury is gonna have to stand on his head. he's still young so it's almost like it's 50/50 whether he does that or not.

i know crosby is kinda the face of the league, but evgeni malkin is so fun to watch, the guy is a player.

If I'm not mistaken, Datsyuk's injury is an old one (pre-playoffs I think). I think it has hampered him throughout the playoffs (to the point where Babcock finally had to sit him). Detroit could use the fresh legs though.

Did Draper play last night? He's another one Detroit could use back. He's not a scorer, but he's a grinder who is great defensively. He might be Detroit's best faceoff man too.

Looking forward to Game 5!

No, he got hurt in the 2nd game against the Blackhawks in the last round. He was out skating before the game last night then didn't play.

Draper was only out there for around 10 minutes last night at best.

Ahh... I wasn't sure if that was a new injury or if he aggravated the injury he sustained in April vs. Calgary (missed a week or so). It was termed a "lower-body" injury, so who knows I guess...

Good to see Draper back (if only for limited duty). Hopefully, he'll get his legs back for Saturday's game.

The misses couldn't watch the pens last season with their Stanley cup trip. I asked why because she grew up in PA and i know she knew about Jagr and Lemmy; she said she stopped following the pens when Lemieux started in on the ownership and potential moves. But now that she knows who Malkin is she's rooting for him she always roots for the unexpected lol, shes a big Sasha Pavlovic fan

He hasn't put much on the scoreboard, but there's no one better at controlling the puck. Also an excellent defensive forward. The Wings sorely need that right now. I couldn't believe the defensive breakdowns last night. Even Lidstrom gave it away....3 frickin' times!! I think last night was the first time one team outplayed the other in this series. It's down to a best of 3 now. The NHL couldn't ask for a better finals.....or playoff season. I'll bet there are more than a few new hockey fans after these playoffs.

even in the chicago and anaheim series, he wasn't even really controlling the puck that much. i know babcock had him and zetterburg pretty much mirror the getzlaf/perry line, but you'd figure you'd see more of him.

Well, having him in the lineup tonight seemed to provide a spark. His puck control prior to the injury was huge, especially if you look at who replaced him (Maltby, Abdelkader, Leino).

The pens better put this game in the mental recycle bin or they're done. That was a dismal effort on their part....and their players were talking about the Wings looking wiped out.

after the first 5 minutes, osgood could have sat on his ass, because there was nothing going in his direction.

crappy game, i hope the pens bounce back and we get a game 7.

i thought the first goal was soft on fleury's part, everything after that was not really his fault.

he's still got a ways to go, but he's gonna be a good one

Pittsburgh took a ton of stupid penalties, penalties that showed their immaturity at its finest. (The Crosby slash, Talbot also)

Your playing with fire giving Detroit NINE power plays, unfortunately for them, they found out the hard way. Total ass kicking from Detroit.

OUCH!!! The Wings took a period and a half off and couldn't recover. That's the best penguin D I've seen this series, they blocked so many shots they have to be hurting. I don't know what Hossa's problem is, but he almost singlehandedly lost this game tonight with his poor passes, turnovers and Godawful shooting. You'd think he would play the game of his life in this situation.

In a strange sort of way, I'm kind of glad there's another hockey game to watch. I'm not ready for this season to end. These playoffs have been the best in years.

Red Wings just looked a second or a foot off thier game, passes were just to long, or just to fast, players were just a hair out of position, Yes Pengiuns D was the main reason, but the Wings never stepped up until the beginning of the third and bye that time it was to late.

I hate game 7's ya never know how the puck is gonna bounce, man you can play hard & solid all night and out of the blue the puck takes a crazy bounce and your watching your opponent raise the Cup. I'm just happy it's in Detroit.

Penguins dominated until the wings got on the board in the 3rd... then the nerves kicked in and they were running around and just trying to kill time. This does not bode well for game 7... as we saw how they act when their back is to the fire. They were desperate and blocking alot of shots. But they were turning it over left and right... We'll see... I'm just hoping somehow they can settle down and Fluery stands on his head like he has in the past. One other note: I cannot understand why Crosby is not out there killing penalties at the end of a game. He's our best faceoff guy and wins almost all of the 1 on 1 battles all night... Bylsma has to play him more in situations like that. I know we have our specialty guys, but, you play a player as smart as Crosby whenever it gets down to the wire.

Never covered it.. in fact he made three saves all with his body. The overhead view from the replay clearly showed this. Fleury should be buying him a new car/house/hooker after that one. I have no idea what Fluery was even doing... he panicked and was flopping around completely out of the net.
