Mangini has a secret, but fans can read his depth chart
By Steve Doerschuk CantonRep.com staff writer Posted Apr 15, 2009 @ 09:46 PM
BEREA —
Eric Mangini can keep a lot of secrets between now and Aug. 10.
That day — the week of the Aug. 15 preseason opener at Green Bay — league rules require the new Browns head coach to unveil a depth chart.
He could do it before then, but doing so is less likely than Romeo Crennel rejoining the squad as a nose tackle.
With the draft just eight days away, anybody who wants a Browns depth chart must do one himself. Here’s an attempt to discern Mangini’s secret list, and how it will get jolted by the end of the draft:
Offense
• QUARTERBACK 1, Brady Quinn; 2, Derek Anderson; 3, Richard Bartel-*.
Watch words: Quinn might exit for a Round 1 pick. Southern Cal’s Mark Sanchez might be drafted if he slips to No. 5.
• WIDE RECEIVER 1, Braylon Edwards; 2, David Patten; 3, Joshua Cribbs; 4, Paul Hubbard; 5, Syndric Steptoe; 6, Lance Leggett; 7, Devale Ellis.
Watch words: Edwards, too, might exit for a Round 1 pick. Drafting an immediate replacement isn’t a given.
• TIGHT END 1, Robert Royal; 2, Steve Heiden; 3, Martin Rucker; 4, John Madsen; 5, Aaron Walker.
Watch words: Probably nothing higher than a Round 6 pick coming here.
• RUNNING BACK 1, Jamal Lewis; 2, Jerome Harrison; 3, Noah Herron-*; 4, Allen Patrick-*; 5, Marcus Thomas-*.
Watch words: The “we-can’t-do-it-all-at-once” theme is all that would prevent the Browns from spending a high pick here. They’ll see how the first round-and-a-half go and might pounce. If Chris “Beanie” Wells comes aboard with an extra pick, it could mean the Browns would run, run, run until daddy takes the car keys away.
• FULLBACK 1, Lawrence Vickers; 2, Charles Ali.
Watch words: Expect no additions.
• TACKLE 1, Joe Thomas; 2, Ryan Tucker; 3, John St. Clair; 4, Isaac Sowells.
Watch words: Worries over old man Tucker could bring a tackle with a first-round trade into play, if there is a trade for extra picks.
• GUARD 1, Eric Steinbach; 2, Rex Hadnot; 3, Floyd “Pork Chop” Womack-*; 4, Kurt Quarterman-*.
Watch words: Not a priority position after free-agency pick-ups.
• CENTER 1, Hank Fraley; 2, Dustin Fry-*.
Watch words: Fraley turns 32 in September. Alex Mack (Cal) and Eric Wood (Louisville) are serious Round 2 options.
Defense
• DEFENSIVE LINE 1, Shaun Rogers; 2, Corey Williams; 3, Robaire Smith; 4, C.J. Mosley-*; 5, Shaun Smith; 6, Ahtyba Rubin; 7, Louis Leonard; 8, Santonio Thomas; 9, Melila Purcell.
Watch words: Nine’s a crowd. Expect no key additions.
• OUTSIDE LINEBACKER 1, Kamerion Wimbley; 2, David Bowens-*; 3, Alex Hall; 4, Leon Williams; 5, Shantee Orr.
Watch words: Brian Orapko of Texas seems ideal at the right price. Whether No. 5 is the right price is the $35 million question.
• INSIDE LINEBACKER 1, D’Qwell Jackson; 2, Eric Barton-*; 3, Beau Bell; 4, Kris Griffin; 5, Titus Brown-*; 6, David Holloway-*.
Watch words: Southern Cal’s Rey Maualuga offers lots of bang, but James Laurinaitis becomes super-enticing if he gets bucked to Round 2.
• SAFETY 1, Brodney Pool; 2, Mike Adams; Nick Sorensen. Hamza Abdullah-*.
Watch words: A value pick outside Round 1, perhaps Missouri’s William Moore or Oregon’s Patrick Chung, is needed to replace strong safety Sean Jones.
• CORNERBACK 1, Eric Wright; 2, Brandon McDonald; 3, Hank Poteat-*; 4, Corey Ivy-*; Gerard Lawson.
Watch words: In his former life as a defensive coach, Mangini did well with patchwork secondaries. The Browns won’t spend a high pick on a corner unless it looks like a steal.
*—Acquired after the end of the 2008 season.
*—Phil Savage practice squad addition during 2008 season.

Better be wrong, unless Heiden is hurt.

Wrong.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that list.

And I thought Leon was Inside? So the writer did us a favor by trying to make it seem like we have more depth there... We dont!!! even though Leon would probably be better as an OLB, but he probably won't be in Cleveland much longer.
Give me an OLB in the 2nd round (if a good one falls), or Zack Follett in the 4th...

HUH....this is worthless...
Another slow news day in Cleveland...reporters are now making up fake depth charts and "secret lists"...

I am officially losing my mind here.
1 Why do we want to trade and unproven qb (BQ) that has been around the NFL for 2 years
2 For an unproven qb (MS) that is still in college.
If someone could please help me understand the rationale behind this I would be most appreciative

I agree - trading Quinn for Sanchez (basically) is a horrendous idea. I like the idea of trading Quinn for more draft picks, but NOT to draft another QB.
I really hope they are not considering doing this.
You get another rookie QB in that will be paid #5 money... We have a rookie that has been learning for 2 yrs and being paid a lot less than #5 money.

Most coaches are known to have huge egos and they want their guys in there, not leftovers from the previous administration. Also, if Mangini didn't like what he saw from a college BQ when he was coach of the Jets and didn't see any improvement on the limited tape he has - why would he keep the guy?
If either or both were the case and he could get a 1st rounder for BQ, why wouldn't he? Bring in your own guy...especially if you can end up with 3 first rounders and 2 second rounders (at least) by keeping existing picks and trades (includes BE). That's 5 new guys that are likely to be starters (maybe 4 if one is Sanchez) right away. I'd expect Sanchez at #5, Lets assume it is TB at 19 for BQ - pick up Clay Matthews there, and at 29 for the Giants pick, take Hakeem Nicks. At 36 take Sean Smith or Louis Delmas and at 50 take Eric Wood. We'd have a new starting WR, OLB, FS, and OC with a QB the new coach likes.
I'm not saying I agree with it, but it kind of makes sense if you try to look at it from Mangini's prespective.

Just some notes.
I think by the depth chart our biggest need without a doubt is OLB
The rest are all pretty much secondary but Safety is pretty high, Right Tackle WR Center
Then I'd go with a 3rd tier of CB and RB.
Anything in the 2nd n 3rd tiers would be predicated by STEALs in the draft.
OLB is as close to "URGENT" as possible.
Orr...I think he is gone we release him before March 1st. As in see ya???
QB - could go either way. M/K have no allegiance to the pick if they like BQ fine if not get good compensation and bring in their own guy Sanchez who probably would start year 2. Depends on the reward of draft picks. But either way - Sanchez is there at #5 and we don't take him...means M/K love BQ's prospects. They do take him...we can expect a trade later on.
Draft picking. This is M/K's first draft...we cannot assess the previous drafters Clark, Butch, Savage bad or good onto them as in expectations of what they will get us!
JMHO

If we are going to take Sanchez then BQ will be traded BEFORE the draft. We'll know before the draft whether or not BQ is the guy the front office wants.

ok, it makes more sense now, thanks. I really dont agree with it, but I guess thats how the cookie crumbles. If it were to happen this will be Bernie Kosar/Bill Bellicheck all over again.

Bernie is my all-time fave Brown, but in hindsight Belichick was correct about his diminishing skills - Kosar never got another starting gig in the NFL, IIRC because his elbow was shot.

Exactly, it makes "sense" from his point of view. Why would we want him coaching a QB, WR, TE, SS or FB he doesn't like? If he wants someone else and it would essentually be an even trade....go for it. I'm not married to much on this roster. And in the end, this is probably Mangini's last shot at a head coaching position if he fails. So he needs to do it his way.
I'd like to keep Quinn.....but that's maybe the hometown boy story making me feel that way.

No doubt....and if there weren't speculative articles such as this (which is the writer's job this time of year) what would we talk about? What's the harm in a writer throwing up what Mangini may be looking at for us to further debate. *shrug*
Right now we're 0-0 baby and the sky is the limit.....

completely disagree. was it a statement that phil/rac loved frye/DA's prospects when they passed up quinn for joe thomas? no. it doesn't seem to be the MO for our front office to take a qb in the top 5 and it sounds more like they want to build the team and fill holes, instead of adding more controversy. further, we won't take sanchez before dealing either or both qbs. there are only a finite number of teams who need qbs and if we were to do so, we lose in bargaining chips. sure an auction could start but they do not want to lose any shred of an upper hand in negotiations. jmho.

I love the Browns. But If they take Sanchez at #5, I may just ignore NFL for a few years.
Taking Sanchez at #5 shows us a couple of things. Mangini is impatient. Next years crop of QB's are 10 times better then this year. And to make that big of a change/decision without even going through a mini camp to look at our QB's for a 1 year starter in college, that only had good games at home and still untested is a very bad idea. Investing more money and losing what we gave up to get BQ, will further hurt this team. Might as well bring back Butch Davis imo
I'm not a BQ fan and didnt like the pick when we got him. I thought we gave up too much to get him. That being said, we do have him so either get value in a trade or actually give the kid a chance. Either way with all the needs this team has taking a QB at 5 is the stupidest thing I can think of.

If we trade BQ before the draft they will take Sanchez if he's there at # 5. They (like the rest of the NFL considering DAs lack of trade interest) have seen DA on film, and know he's not a long term solution. IF they trade Quinn they'll draft Sanchez at 5, and pick up a 1st and a 3rd for BQ.
There is no way they leave this draft with DA/another bum as there QBs. The reason being is that you usually need to be top 5 to get a franchise type of prospect, and there's no guarantee we will be picking that high next year.
Against logic, the most effective armor is willful ignorance.

it is my opinion that drafting a qb at #5 is a huge risk that mangini would not take simply because of the money that qb would command, the bust factor of 1st round qbs, especially lately, and because he recognizes other needs.
historically, when he drafted a qb, he drafted him in the 2nd round, opting instead to use his number 4 overall on a LT instead of leinart (same school, more success, arguably more polished player) or cutler. it showed that he valued the overall view of the team and would not get "smitten" over a qb. i think leaks that we're interested is a trade play because word is the redskins, the jets, and another team that i forget all want sanchez.

i think it depends more on whether or not we trade edwards. if we trade edwards, i believe crabtree will be looked at long and hard. further, if curry/raji were available, i think that'd be more important to mangini but that's just my opinion.
you can think that DA has no game but what i'd say is that it makes more sense to build the rest of the team, at least the rest of the defense, and give him another year. if he's as bad as everyone says, we'll be back in the top 5. at that point, we take tebow and the qb talks end.
i think sanchez is a good prospect but i think he's benefiting from the same thing quinn benefited from in 07: extremely weak qb class.

So maybe, and I know I'm reaching on this one, do you think all this Quinn on the trading block in a smoke screen for keeping our #5 pick intentions in the dark? Same with BE maybe? By having those both out there, it does open the possibility of us selecting essentially anything with the #5.
Meh. I just hope Mangini and Kokinis know what they're doing.

you know, i never thought about it that way but it's possible. a reach like you said, but still possible. at the least, it doesn't hurt cloud our needs a little more.
knowing what i know of mangini and the moves he made in the 3 years as a jets coach and the results he got, i'm confident in him.

I'm sitting here watching NFL Network, and they are showing the Cowboys when Jimmy Johnson took over... And how after a disappointing first season, they traded the great Herschel Walker... and got like 3 firsts, 3 seconds, and some more.... With those picks... the Cowboys turned it around.....
Optimism? Not sure... but I see some light beyond the clouds even with all of the trade rumors of Edwards and Quinn....
Go Browns...

i think intangibles get thrown out a lot but if there is a single qb with great intangibles in recent history, it's tebow. he's mobile, decent arm, size of a linebacker and he carried his team.

Decent-armed mobile QB's get exposed in the NFL. The defenses are too smart and fast enough to take away your strength....unless it's very, very good. I don't see Tebow being very, very good in anything but leadership (which is of course important but I don't think he's a stud NFL QB).
We won't have to worry about him in the NFL for another year anyway.

i agree. amid all the trade talk, i think there was a lot of initial panic by the fanbase that a hometown hero, deserved or undeserved, but once you get past that, you see that this has the potential to get us over the hump very quickly. we need something like this to catch up to the ravens and the steelers. when each team has the same number of picks each year, it's almost a perpetual chase. if we come ahead with multiple day one picks, it could help close the gap.
