S Abram Elam - 4th year player we signed to an offer sheet in the off season. Still young enough to improve. I'm guessing that Ryan doesn't mind losing him though since they signed Leonard - but Mangini probably likes him a lot. Looks like we no longer need to draft a safety now, so he probably saves us a pick as well.
http://notredame.scout.com/a.z?s=109&p=9&c=2&cid=848092&nid=4169189&fhn=1

DE Kenyon Coleman - 7th year player. Originally from Oakland and Dallas, had a hand in making Marcus Spear a bust as far as I can tell. Snatched up by the Jets in 07, sounds pretty solid:
http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/articles/show/1217-jets-think-kenyon-coleman-is-our-type-of-guy-

QB Brett Ratliff - 3rd year player. Undrafted out of Utah, looks like he didn't start two full seasons there. Hopefully a solid #2 QB?
http://www2.sportsnet.ca/football/nfl/players/Brett_Ratliff

All in all, I think we should've gotten another pick in the deal, but what can I say? What do yall think of our 3 newest Browns?

Great deal. We got two starters, a backup quarterback, and a 2nd round pick which should give us a starter as well. Not to mention, we saved a lot in salary, and the talent isn't a whole lot worst at 17 than 5.

As it stands I am very happy with the trade. I think Elam is going to end up being better than Jones for us and Ratliff allows us to shop Anderson for a 2nd or 3rd. Coleman I can take or leave, but THREE PICKS in the 2nd round? After how bare Phil left the draft pick cupboard, that's HUGE.

Hola. Jets fan here with some perspective on your new players:

Coleman: The least exciting of the bunch. Strictly a depth player

Ratliff: Has great potential and plenty of upside. Not a guarantee, but can be potentially good down the road.

Elam: I will miss him. I was thrilled when the Jets signed his tender. He is a feast or famine type of player. He will get beat sometimes because he is too aggressive, but his aggressiveness is what makes him exciting. He'll get beat on a pump fake one play and then come back the next play and strip the QB for a game winning fumble.

I think this was a good trade for both sides, as posters on both the Browns and Jets message boards are relatively happy about it. Always nice when both sides are content.

I agree. It solved some problems, allowing some flexibility later on.

Coleman might end up starting for us tho....

So a DE/ILB/SS all from the jets starting on our roster next season...what do you think of barton the MLB we picked up earlier?

Barton is sweet, but he's getting up there.

Not a long-term solution.

this trade was worth it just for Abram Elam , we no longer NEED to draft a S. so it also takes care of a pick this year. the other guys are gravy, its good to have the 3rd QB though, with the trade takes of quinn, or ever DA, I was worried about a back up. now we have one there too.

Welcome. You have entered the portal for the Cleveland Jets 2009 season. Step away from your misgivings.
Nice to hear that it was good for both sides. Sounds like a solid, not stellar deal. I like to hear from other fans.

just wondering what their fans thought of him...

Like Dra wasn't liked by many browns fans...but i thought he is pretty solid...not a playmaker or anything...but a pretty good starter if u have nobody.

I dont think Coleman will be starting, unless Robaire Smith or Corey Williams gets hurt. Plus there have been talks of Atoye Rubin playing some NT to allow Rogers to play some end. It does allow some pretty good depth in case of injury and a to rotate d-lineman thru-out the game. Also good for competition and sharing knowedge.

DEs
Williams
Smith
Coleman

DTs
Rogers
Rubin

Both
Shaun Smith

Shold also have a good goalline defense along the d-line. They need one after losing McGinnest at LB. He was his best last year on short yardage.

Coleman probably works hard and has character... rotational player at best he's about 30 years old after all.

Trade that expensive #5 pick and pick up some much needed help/depth and an additional pick.

Does anyone know what position Elam plays?

I was hoping he was a FS that could QB our secondary. I like Pool, but I want a FS-esque player alongside him

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Robaire Smith tear his Achilles Tendon? That is not an injury that you come back from easy. My guess is that Smith is a rotation player.

Actually, it really saved us 3 picks.

We have a starting safety- that draft need which may have come in the second ended up becoming WR and OLB which we still needed.

We have DL depth. Coleman may start, if Robaire isn't 100%, and if Robaire is back to his old form, we have some solid depth on BOTH SIDES in the trenches. No longer need to draft a DL for depth this year.

I also thought we'd take a project QB second day. We no longer need that, and we can use it on something else now. Use that pick on another need.

Then came Mack. Depth on both sides of the trenches, where it all begins.

This trade really did a lot for us, and I'm very happy with the outcome.

He started at SS for the Jets beginning in Week 9 of last year, I believe. Maybe he can play FS (hopefully), but he was a SS for the Jets.

Let's put it this way, Elam is better in coverage than being the run supporter. It puts Pool where he should be.

Jets depth chart has him as a FS behind Kerry Rhodes.

When we made the trade I was pumped, I was hoping we got one of Rhodes, Harris, or Revis (among draft picks) for the pick. This simply didn't end up being the case.

But I sure hope he can play FS for us/manage our secondary because that's what we really need. I was hoping we'd draft the FS out of Alabama with this in mind

biggest joke of a trade down in recent draft history, Jets get their franchise QB for a 2nd and a bunch of dime a dozen rotational players....it was basically a salary dump.....like in Baseball, lol

I´d like to know what other teams (WAS?) offered?

Mangini got pick happy and didn´t do much with it....if the draft was poker, Mangini is a tight-weak player who´s easy to read and gets owned...playing it passive...why not trade up to get Nicks at #28? It would have pissed off the Giants too...I like Mack, Nicks, Veikune better than what they did....this draft is so deep at WR....the Massa pick will go down in Browns draft blunder history....will be fun looking back at this draft in 3-4 years and see all the other WR who contributed and being picked after Massa..."why 2?" will become a running gag, Mangini will be gone and the homers confess they didn´t like him from the get go, lol

Grab your pom-poms as long as your feeling it, lol

I feel like we should have gotten another pick in the trade, like a 4th this year or a good pick next year, but oh well. Obviously the three player we got are going to be the crux if whether it was a good trade or not, which is why I started the thread...

But just because we didn't get Jenkins Faneca or Rhodes doesn't mean we got scrubs. Just cause you don't recognize the names doesn't make them bad...

With all the salary we've been avoiding it feels like we've been watching the Bengals draft.

How do you trade the 5th pick and not get two 1st rounders in return?

Could we have gotten more? Maybe, maybe in another year.

If this was the ONLY serious offer, then it is the right move for US. We didn't need an overpaid player. And ONE player. We needed some depth and moves. This team is NOT one player away from being a contender.

I just think this was a weird draft that was a buyer's market, as ballpeen IIRC said recently. We wanted to get out of the 5 spot, and the old "value chart" didn't apply this year because of the players at the top of the 1st round. JMHO

Plus this trade was about the other 3 players included in the deal. While not all stars, they add some immediate depth and Mangini wanted them here for a reason.

And that is why I believe it is a bad trade. We got 3 journeymen out of the deal, 2 of them wont start and the one that will (Elam) wouldn't start for most teams in the NFL. The 5th pick holds more value than that in my opinion.

To spend more money on a defensive lineman? Who did you want us to draft, we could have went Andre Smith at RT or BJ Raji at NT. Obviously our front office didn't want Crabtree (the guy who i wanted along with Curry).

We took the trade down to get a player we were targeting and to get other players that Mangini obviously wanted on his team.

We don't know what their value is, but I do believe we have gotten at least two starters (or a rotational D-Lineman and safety starter). We also have gotten a QB who knows Mangini's system and shows some promise. That then a 2nd

This is a prime example of someone (me) looking up a guy's stats (not a lot of tackles or sacks) and making a snap judgement about him. I know much more now about him than I did yesterday. Live and learn.

for the record...I know and like Coleman and Elam...but they aren´t superstars...Coleman will be a 30yo rotational DE for 1 or 2 best case 3 years for us...Elam is a nice UDFA DB Mangini developed and is the big piece in this deal... I´m tough on Mangini but I respect and really trust his DB evaluations...he has a great track record selecting and developing DBs and think he made 2 good picks in Carey and Francies today....so, I also trust him on Elam being a decent player

....but realisticly those 3 guys are barely worth a late 3rd TOGETHER...and that may be a stretch...Ayodele and Fasano were worth a 4th last year....we basically got a 2nd+3rd/4th roudn compensation for the trade down....that´s not enough...I´d rather take Crabtree at 5 then and trade up for Mack or Wood back into the 1st

Crab+Mack/Wood > Mack+Robo+Massa+Elam...but that´s just me....I will always take quality over quantity on draftday

Also...I´m sure there was some other team offering something for Sanchez...I would love to know what the Redskins or maybe Broncos offered....I have this feeling that Mangini overvalued his Jets-players and simply went with quantity over quality/value
