The magic 8 ball said "outlook not so good"
QB is a question mark. The Oline is a question mark. Theres been change but is it good change? What about that rt side? Is the personnel any better? Will Tucker even play? Best case we start a rook at center.
WR Braylon? Will he be better? Who is going to start on the other side? Patten or a Robo rook?
Has JL really got anything left or has he lost a step? How much will they miss K2?
The D? Again some change but is it enough? Will we find a pass rush? Wimbley? Can Robaire Smith stay healthy?
Can we stop the rush or will Cedric Benson run up and down the field all day?

I hate that darn 8 ball it's so negative.

That guy from Hawaii can contribute right away as a situational rusher...so can Robiskie and Mack.

Sorry Ammo, Robiski and Mack will never contribute as situational pass rushers.

Had to do it. Your ENG 101 professor would be very disappointed in you.

Ooops...

Journalism 233 aka grammar bootcamp. Hardest journalism class here, escaped with a B.

Anyway...I still feel that Mack will play day one, so will Robiskie, and Veikune will play on 3rd downs. That's an improved team right there.

I hope Massaquoi develops quickly too but I'm not counting on him to emerge until next year.

As much as I've dogged on Robiskie in the past, I even said that people should take what I say with a grain of salt. I know he's gonna be a solid pro. I like the polish. I think it's misinformation to think he's already as good as he'll get...bodies continue to develop, film study, etc will all help. He can run routes and has hands and adequate speed, that translates to NFL success.

I want to know more about Abram Elam.

So the question is....we will be able to truly compete in the AFC North Division this year, our 1st year under Mangini?

Compete to win the division? No
Compete week in week out to win more games than we did last year? Yea, I think we should.

DCDAWGFAN, To be honest like yourself, winning the division is highly unlikely. It would take major injuries to both the Ravens and Steelers for that to happen. We may not be able to get past the Bengals this year.

Reaching the AFC championship game, would be almost impossible, with the likes of the Titans, Colts, Texas, Miami, Jets, and the like. If I had to guess, I'd say we'll go our usual 4-12 to 6-10 unlless the rest of the AFC has the most injuries in the histroy of the NFL.

I really don't expect to see the Browns go back to being their former selfs, until the team has a major change in operations. It all starts at the top, that's just a fact of life. That coming from a Browns fan of over 55 years and a season ticket holder for 35 of them. Stopped drinking the kool-aid in 99'.

Ummm...we did change our operations.

I wouldn't say we're division contenders...but we definitely have enough talent and depth to compete against the schedule we play this season.

We are much stronger up front now on both sides of the ball. It's not even close how much better our DL depth is this season vs. last season. I don't know how good the right side of the OL will be but I know the left side will be very solid.

It all comes down to how good the QB's play. If Quinn emerges, we'll be the shocker of the AFC.

After listening to Mangini...there's no doubt in my mind this guy's a better coach than Romeo. Listen to the draft pressers...I LOVE the preparation that went into this draft and the type of player he looks for, along with his descriptions of how these guys can fit into our system.

We play Detriot Denver Buffalo KC and Oakland so we should at least compete in those games. Unfortunately I don't see the Pottsville Maroons in the division so I expect the AFC North will be laughing at us again this year.

The Pottsville Maroons won a championship that Bidwell stole. Don't underestimate Pottsville.

That said, 2 years ago we all thought we would continue to struggle and we went 10-6. Last year, the consensus was a small backslide due to schedule but still around 8-8 and we were a horrid 5-11.

So, perhaps it is a good thing that most around here think we'll struggle?

What I like about this offseason is that we added depth. We have guys who can toe the line at pretty much every spot (LOLB, WR2 and RG being the biggest ? to me right now). And, just as importantly we have guys behind them that are going to be ready to go if they struggle or get injured. That 2nd part is what we have been missing the past few years (and both parts we were missing before Phil/Romeo).

What we are still missing is the all-out playmakers on offense and defense. Maybe Braylon re-emerges along with James Davis or someone else. Maybe Elam takes the next step on defense. But, we cannot sit here today and know that we have those playmakers, which is what I think holds me back from us competing for the playoffs.

We won a championship in 1964 but our QB situation is still almost as murky as the Maroons.

I look at each corps;

QB: we are essentially the same
RB/ FB: same
TE: no KW2, but better blocking = same
WR: BE stays and we trade Robo for Dainty = about the same
OL: looks like we are a little better here

DL: more depth, a little better
LB: about the same
DB: a little better b/c of depth at CB

not much improvement IMO,but who knows

This would be true if half the team hadn't been on the bench with an injury or on IR at one time or another. I don't know if we EVER had all the projected starters on the field once last year ?

Without any lengthy discourse, I am expecting 7-9 at best in 2009.

Although we filled some needs with the draft we still lack the bonafida impact players that consistently change and take over the games. Until those players emerge it will be tough to grow into a contender.

I think nine games would be within reason, but it's always shot in the dark for that that stuff.

What I really wanna see is what we look like against Pittsburgh! We just brought in 20 some odd 'smart' and 'tough' players. We've had some real close games the past few years that we just couldn't finish: I want to see if we've done enough to strengthen our team concept that we actually show up for 60 whole minutes against those steelers.

If we go 1-16 with a win against Pitt, I'm happy this year...

I liked Romeo in 2007, but what was the biggest reason of success? Chudzinski? Who knows.

But, after attending a few of the Browns games in 2008, noting the Pittsburgh Game at Home, I was done. The calls Romeo made in 2008 just made me want to pull my hair out!

Bottom Line, Romeo was never a great motivator of any sort, or Coach. But, what was the reason for success in 2007? Who was responsible for it?

Too early to start putting a win/loss prediction, but i do think we are a better team now then last year.

In 2007, we won some games that maybe we shouldn't have, and the schedule was favorable as already mentioned.

In 2008, the wheels just came off. I don't think we were really that untalented comparatively, but injuries hit at the wrong spots. JJ was a blow to the receivers, we were not prepared to go without him. We had hoped that the D-line was fixed so that we could then let the linebackers make the plays. Two things were assumed there, the line was fixed and the linebackers could do it. Well, injuries hit the D-line and we found out the linebackers sucked. Not too mention the patch work secondary and the young corners. Throw in a sophomore slump for Chud, and the year became a disaster by the end of September.

So, where does that leave 2009? Starting with the offense, we need to establish the QB- that is why i wanted a trade of somebody. We still have the controversy and this could be bad. Heck, it now could be a three ring circus with Ratliff. Lewis is a year older, how much does he have left. He looked slow last year, but the oline did not help matters. So fix the oline- its been addressed- should be better then it was last year once things gel. The RT is a glaring need for next year, just hope for the best this year. The widereceivers are stabilized. Stallworth was a dud and is good as gone. BE is here for the year, doubt he is traded now. The new guys need to produce, and Robiski should and MM is a project for the future. MM is supposedly an excellent blocker for the running game.

For the defense, did not add any stars anywhere, but added depth across the board. Its hard to get excited about it, but one player was not going to fix this unit. Adding solid players and depth players just might stabilize it. I am cautiously optimistic. The dline is better then last year, and hopefully healthy. The corners have another year of experience. The OLB are the biggest question marks, with Wimbley needing to produce or be replaced. This is his year, do it or bye bye.

So can we compete- yeah, i think so. We are not going to get blown out of games. We will not blow people out either. I will be surprised if we are drafting in the top ten next year.

I agree with this, to a point. Obviously, not having seen a second of this team play this year making a win/loss prediction is pure guess work.

Are we a better team? The offense will miss Winslow no matter what his detractors on here would have you believe. But we won't miss Stallworth and Robiskie and Massaquoia should help (although first year WRs usually struggle). Lewis is a year older and his tank is damn near enpty ,IMO. But if Davis is half of what his pimps on here say he is then that should at least be a wash. If Tucker can play and Mack pushes Fraley to RG or the bench the line improves, too. All in all improvement in the offense will basically rely on who the QB is and Braylon's hands of stone. So I'd say at this point the offense has to be considered on a par with last year's version.

The defense should be better if we believe what we've read about the new additions. How could it not be with McGinest and Davis gone? But I'll withhold judgement on this unit until I see them stop a team from converting a 3rd and 2. Or, thinking back on last year, a 3rd and 14 for that matter. If we don't stop the run consistently this year we'll be no better than last year. Even if we do manage to win a game or two more.

I think I'll know what kind of year we're gonna have after the first half of the Minnesota game. If I see a team that plays like they're as excited to be in the stadium as I am then I'll look forward to good things even if we lose a little more than we win. But if they come out like so many of Romeo's teams did where it looks like the game is interrupting their afternoon naps then it's gonna be another long and painful year. And I'll be more than pissed.

Let's hope all these guys play like they're capable of and we kick some ass this year. But until at least late August who knows what we've got here?

One big thing to note...

A lot of this depends on Alex Mack playing well his rookie year...but if he does...the power run is back. That should do a lot for us.

Mack will do just fine... I'm sure of it...

Our left to middle side is on LOCK... Thomas - Steinbach - Mack.....

I think the other two spots will do okay for one year...

the running game is BACK!

Lewis.. Harrison.. Davis... Now that is what you call ALL DAY (adrian peterson)!!

I think we upped our talent on both sides of the ball. But I think we will go as far as our Defense carries us. Normally I'd say we will start our slow with the new Staff being brought in.

But we brought in: Mosely, Bowden, Barton, Coleman and Elam - all with game and all with experience in the System and we kept the talent which basically has the 3-4 experience of a RAC system which is the hard part. Ryan might let them loose and attack a little more which is an easy adjustment - its the read and react discipline gap which require a lot of techniqe that needs to be learned. Pointed in the right direct and "GO GET THEM" although obviously needs technique its just more natural especially when you got Talent and we got some talent.

I see Coleman helping our Run D as a starter or rotational DE.
Rogers n Corey are in year two Shaun Smith year 3 and Rubin year 2...and don't forget the kid Mosley...we got a lot of youth with depth and knowledge in our Defense!

I see Barton and Bowden had good sack results in his limited playing time with the Jets. We can only ASSume the Tonga Kid (DV) will learn enough of the system to provide some impact...if not from day one...more n more as the season progresses.

There there is Elam...young has starts, knows Mangini's system to be the DB quarterback - moves Pool to SS his best position.

We got veteran leadership regarding the system, practices and techniqe.
Elam - Safeties, Poteat - CBs, Barton n Bowden - ILB/OLBs, Mosley n Coleman - DL.

All tiers to make the simple transitions from RACs D to Mangini/Ryans and get us ready from GAME 1!!!

I think this will be the key to the season on us being just competitive or actually us being contenders. And the key is how well they are coached up and a lot riding on DV to provide Impact! As well as Wimbley being coached up better.

Offense. Upgraded our WR corp.
QBs will have BQ starting from day one.
MACK at Center big time positive for the OL.
Davis could provide impact as RB is the one position with the least amount of transition. TEs have team quality as I think our Offense worked much better as a team with flow with the TEs being disciplined.

It will take time to get the new language down from Chuds O to our new one - but we'll see. A lot has to do with BQ learning the system and implementing it for the rest to catch on faster.

By "COMPETE", I take it the writer means have a .500 pct record or better, them the answer is NO. Hard to guess right now, but I don't expect to be more than 4-12 to 7-9 for the up coming sesaon.

I see our draft as a C, with the Bengals a C+, the Steelers a B- and the Ravens a B. Baring any big injuries in the division, I see us finishing last or tied for it in our division.

We have a way to go, before we can compete with the Ravens or Steelers, not to mention the Patriots, Colts, Miami, Jets, Chargers, Texans and the likes.

At the present time the Raiders are rated last in the AFC followed bus the Bengals and Browns. We should have traded Anderson for a #3 to whoever would take him and got rid of Edwards for the best offer, before the draft.

Then we could have taken CB,OLB OL and picked up WR's in the 3rd and 4th rounds.

I'm in total agreement.

My main thing is that we are SO MUCH DEEPER on the DL and at CB than last year. Robaire Smith going down pretty much screwed us up, same with Daven Holly because relying on Cousins back there killed us.

New linemen help the running game as much as, if not moreso a new runningback. IF Tucker stays healthy and if this Womack is good in the run game (he looks the part...I've never focused on him though, but he looks like a mauler), we should be able to impose our will on weaker defenses...I don't know how we'll do against the top D's in the league, but weaker D's? This line has "mauling" written all over it.

My biggest concern is the passrush...if we could double our sack total this year I consider that a huge success and we WILL win more ballgames.

Well, let's be realistic. Quinn is still unproven, and he'll need a bit of adjustment time, if he's going to be our starter, though I think he will be. Edwards will need to NOT lead the league in dropped passes, no real guarentees there but I think he'll bounce back to some degree. We did lose KWii and say what you want, I understand about the leg and money issues but he is a good player and was our best receiver, so, he'll be missed to a degree, though I think Rucker, Heiden, and Royal will do just fine.

Now after BE who do we have to throw the ball to besides Rucker and Heiden? Well, I doubt we can really expect our rookie WR's to come right in and blow everybody away, as mentioned, Robiskie doesn't have top speed. I believe we still have Paul Hubbard and he does have top speed but he's also unproven.

I don't see where we heavily improved the defense much at all really. I confess to being a bit disappointed that we didn't get Clay Matthews Jr. or Ray Maliluga, though we'll see him twice a year since the Bengals got him.

My guess is that we're headed for another top 5 or at least top 10 pick in the next draft. I hope we get James (or Joe) McKninght from USC. He'd be a nice replacement for Lewis and if Quinn should not work out then Colt McCoy seems like a promising QB, but QB only if truly needed.

I predict between 4-6 wins but Quinn looking good enough and our defense not looking good enough. So I'd expect more defensive picks in the next draft and more FA moves next off season. Although, if the D holds up a bit then we could see an 8-8 season but that's the best I can give them and I think I'm being too generous.

Yo, Line Judge! Part you might want to include or count on more heavily. If we are say, aggressive, and on two sides of ball, say edge and zone blitzing, better pressure on regular on D, and throwing some screens and stretching the ball deeper upfield, we might flat out shock some people. The X Factor is not Mangini, it is the attitude and the gameplan it will forge.
I still maintain that playing not to lose was the "coach in fear" product RAC had us in way too much, fear of blitz, fear of deep passing, etc. (can you say kneeldown? I know you can!). Playing to win means to create advantages and roll the dice. IMO we have given away too many games in our division; we surrendered before the war with our half-ankled "gameless plan" which seldom changed. I hope we really plan and go after people.

Well...since last year ended...we have a new starter at SS, FS, DE, ILB..that's better than 1/3 of the starting defense.

We picked up a rotational vet DE, pass-rush vet OLB, and drafted a highly-touted OLB conversion.

We are set for starters now at CB and the DL rotation will be very good.

We have brought in a ton of DBs and have several LBs to choose from...both for depth.

I think we have done a great deal to improve the defense.

AND...

We got rid of two guys who were past their prime years ago who RAC insisted on keeping on the field.

just don't think next year we'll be very big contenders, but the year after that, I think we should be serious playoff contenders.

Bengals x 2
Lions
Chiefs
Raiders
Jaguars

just don't think next year we'll be very big contenders, but the year after that, I think we should be serious playoff contenders.

Well, I don't know that I would scratch 2 wins against Cincy just yet ...last year they had the 12th overall "D" I believe and they didn't have Carson.....they get him back, plus Keith Rivers...and added Rey M. and Tank Johnson to that "D"....not to mention, TJ is gone so I'm thinking Ocho Cinco will re-gain his old ways and put up big numbers......and with them adding Cedric Benson, I think they have a run game to go with it......

We all know that Pitt is tough, and I don't see us beating them....as bad as I hate to say it... .....

Baltimore....I can see them going to the bottom of the division to be honest with you...or at least competeing for the bottom with us....they did a total overhaul on "D"....and their WR corp is one injury away from being non existent...(Derrick Mason)....

As far as the rest of the schedule......I don't know that I could call any of them a for sure win......

It's surprising to me how many people pine over Maualuga that can't spell his name.

And if we take McCoy or mcknight in the 1st next year I'll... Where's the emoticon for puke?

Not sure what you mean when you say "pine over"......but does it really matter if we spell his name correct or not......

I agree about taking a QB in the 1st......we got DA and BQ....and if Mangini was not happy with our QB's, then we should have been more of a player in the "Cutler Saga".....personally I think the QB's in the draft this year were garbage....and next year doesn't seem to be much better.....but anything can change from now until the 2010 draft......

At this point its hard to tell who we can or can't beat. Yes, we've addressed some issues in the draft and FA, but so have other teams. Are we picking pieces that will most definitely contribute to a better team next year? Yes we are, but this team will be young and need growth. We could go 8-8 or we could go 4-12 again, we don't know. Teams like Atlanta, Baltimore, and Miami sprung up out of nowhere to become competitors last season. Who is going to surprise us this year?

My heart says we will no roll over and die and compete in every game, but logic tells me that we won't win more than 6 games because we are "rebuilding" no matter how you debate it.

Let's look at the schedule...

vs MINNESOTA VIKINGS - All depends on Percy Harvin being all that and Sage Rosenfels being better than Tavaris Jackson. If that's true, we're in for a long day cuz AP will shred us. Something tells me we'll be prepared though. Tough matchup for Week 1.

@ Denver Broncos - They have NO defense and lost their QB who shredded us last season. Very winnable.

@ Baltimore Ravens - I hate playing in Baltimore. I think the place is more intimidating than Pittsburgh.

vs CINCINNATI BENGALS - All depends on Carson Palmer having protection and someone replacing Housh...otherwise we can very easily win this game because the Bengals aren't a good football team.

@ Buffalo Bills - See above. They let their best lineman go and added a diva who doesn't fit the city of Buffalo well at all.

@ Pittsburgh Steelers - I want to win this game. That's about all I can tell you.

vs GREEN BAY PACKERS - Probably the best candidate to have a big time turnaround from last season. Could be a tough one.

@ Chicago Bears - They have Cutler but do they have much else? They gave up the farm to get him and they still have a poor line and poor receivers.

vs BALTIMORE RAVENS (MNF) - The Ravens generally struggle in Cleveland, and before we had to start Dorsey against the Eagles we rose up on MNF last year. The Ravens, IMO are not as good as their record indicated. The Titans should have thumped them had they not shot themselves in the foot repeatedly.

@ Detroit Lions - We'd BETTER win this game.

@ Cincinnati Bengals - See above.

vs SAN DIEGO CHARGERS - San Diego coming into Cleveland in December. Norv Turner coached team vs. an Eric Mangini coached team. Maybe not the automatic L people assume it is.

vs PITTSBURGH STEELERS (TNF) - I want to win this game more than I want to win the one in Pittsburgh. I really, really do think Mangini's gonna have us prepared for the Steelers this year. Remember Mangini took an undermanned Jets team to beat the Pats in 2006 (and win the division). This Browns team destroys that Jets team in terms of talent.

@ Kansas City Chiefs - The Chiefs were 2-14 for a reason...but they always play well in KC. Close call.

vs OAKLAND RAIDERS - We'd better win this game too.

vs JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS - Warm weather team in a cold weather city...we should win unless the Jags re-find themselves from '07.

12-4 is a possibility...but so is 6-10...it's too tough to gauge how this team will play against this schedule. Somewhere between 6 wins and 12 wins. I'm factoring in Braylon having a big year, the defense playing respectable ball and Quinn playing well...as well as beating Pittsburgh and Baltimore both once.

So yes, we're very capable of competing. The fact that the power running game will be back will be huge for us against weaker defenses (as well as having a rookie receiver with good hands who will always be in the right spot).

Since I said somewhere in between 6 wins and 12 wins, I'll guess 9-7.

i can see us winning 6 to 8 games......i dont think the "D" was as bad as it looked last year....when the "O" goes 3 and out every time the "D" got no rest thus making them tired....if we can keep the "O" on the field for more than 3 plays we will be just fine....im not worried about Jamal Lewis losing a step, im really excited about Davis. i think Robo is going to be be a very solid number 2 next to braylon, and our slot wr will be just fine with either patten or mass????(Spelling), i think our O-Line just got meaner with the addition of Alex Mack, put Hadnot at RG, and Tucker at RT and we have a VERY solid line....cheer up peeps its going to be a decent year for us

Every year, like you, I'm optimistic. Every year, I always expect good things to come from this team.

-Every year, I'm let down. Every year dude. At this point, winning the division would be like winning the Superbowl. - We haven't won the division since I was in 6th grade. - I'm 30 years old dude.

I'm not optimistic anymore. 3 wins this year.

As far as us having a good year, and as far as our recent draft picks doing well, hey, I'll believe it when I see it.

well seeings how your a whooping 3 years older than me i guess you put me in my place hahaha....seriously tho this is part of being a browns fan, each year is a clean slate, and each year a team that sucked can win the big one. you never freaking know we could come out and go undefeated (Pipe dream), or we could go 500, or we could go winless....we wont know untill the season starts....if you dont want to do this anymore im sure there are other teams who wont let you down each year..... just hang in there bud, it has to get better sometime....right?
