CLEVELAND -- Veteran wide receiver Drew Bennett, formerly of the Rams, will visit the Browns on Wednesday in hopes of signing with the team, a source close to the situation said.

Bennett (6-5, 196) was originallly signed as a free agent with the Titans out UCLA in 2001 and spent six seasons in Tennessee. He led the team with 46 catches in 2006 and a 16.0-yard average. In 2004, he tied an NFL record with eight TDs in a three-game span.

Bennett signed with the Rams as a free agent in 2007, but never panned out there. He caught 33 passes for 375 yards and 3 TDs in '07 and broke his leg in the 2008 opener, missing the rest of the season.

Always liked him. He's a clone of Joe J. Great go-to guy on 3rd down.

I'd be thrilled if we signed him.

Yeah they are pretty much the same guy, only Bennett is 4 years younger.

Oh, and he didn't have like 17 knee surgeries in the last year. He did break his leg though.

I would also be excited if we signed Bennett.

Maybe in stature, but hasn't he had a problem with (get this) drops the past sew seasons?

Well he was out all of last year after breaking his leg in the first game of the season.

I don't know about the drops though.

Anyone else know about Bennett having a case of the yips?

I like this. I hope we get this guy. He brings a nice veteran leadership that we can use in our WR core. I wouldn't expect much production from him however.

In that case we might as well bring back Dorsey.

If you can't play, you don't need to be on this team. The "veteran leadership" thought only carries weight if the guy playing can actually........you know......play.

Jurevicius and Andra Davis.........great veteran leaders, no game left. The result?

No reason to be on this roster.

I'm with you here Toad. I don't like the idea of signing Bennett. Ask a Rams' fan about him. I dare you. He has been terrible since leaving the Titans.

I agree 100%, but we don't know if he can play because he was out all last year.

So we sign him to a low paying contract with incentives, see if he can play in training camp, and if he can't you cut him.

I don't know if he can play or not. All I'm saying is that if he's brought here to be a "leader" but can't play then he isn't someone we should sign.

With the way the Rams offensive line has played over the last couple of years I can't comment on the play of guys in that lineup. I'd be for bringing him to camp, but not keeping him if he doesn't show he's ready to be a viable receiver.

Cool... If he's healthy, he could definitely be our #2 while Robo gets acclimated to life as a pro.

If we get this guy, then who is responsible for holding and pushing off to kill drives with the KWalso gone and who is going to take over dropping regularly, especially if BE goes elsewhere? We got holes to fill. If he can be JJ, I am one happy helmet stripe kinda guy!

Couple thoughts on this...

Would you rather have Steptoe/Hubbard or Bennett?

Bringing B in here for a year will help keep some pressure off of Robo and Masq.

IF steptoe and hubbard aren't cut (a big'if') they are extremely cheap. We already have four guys likely in front of those two, and frankly steptoe wan't terrible when he played.

No reason to bring in Bennett IMO.

I want the best receiving core on the team in 2009...whichever way gets us there I'm ok with.

I could see Edwards the 1, Biskie the 2, Bennett the 3, Patten the 4 and Massaquoi the 5.

If Massaquoi moves up the depth chart...even better.

Does this mean that Braylon might be leaving us?

Well, it's fairly obvious that Mangini values two things in a WR.

1) Size.

2) Ability to catch.

I seriously doubt Syndric Steptoe is here next year.

So right now our wide receivers are

Braylon Edwards
Donte Stallworth
David Patten
Joshua Cribbs
Syndric Steptoe
Paul Hubbard
Brian Robiskie
Mohamed Massaquoi
Devale Ellis
Lance Leggett

Possibly unavailable for season = blue
Practice Squad = gray
Rookies =yellow
Possibly going to be traded = red
Prior FO's draft picks that have huge question marks =white

I can understand wanting to bring in another wide receiver.

I wouldnt be the least bit surprised Donte gets cut really soon. Then Hubbard and Steptoe will be camp bodies.

Don't sleep on steptoe... He showed a pinch of talent last year, and I think he showed some guts as well. It's a clean slate this year - anything can happen...

The guy's quick but still doesn't have reliable hands or get open.

last year he was just a bad option. period

I don't think he'll make the team. With Patton and our new WRs, then Cribbs. He's one of the last spots. We'll see..........

Too many wide receivers is better than not enough. Especially when your best pass catcher is in TB now.

Active Roster
Braylon Edwards
Mohamed Massaquoi
Brian Robiskie
David Patten
Joshua Cribbs
Syndric Steptoe

Players Cut
Donte Stallworth

Practice Squad
Devale Ellis
Lance Leggett
Paul Hubbard

This is just my guess, with Stallworth being Cut from the Team to focus on Legal Issues.

The #2 to #4 WR Slot is Open for debate. See below:

-Patten may be the #2 WR for a few games until Robiskie or Massaquoi have adjusted to the NFL
-Robiske will be either the #2 or #3 WR, and I'll bet on that.
-Massaquoi could very well end up being the #2 WR before the season's end, and moving Robiske in for 3rd Down Situations as the #3 WR.
-Steptoe WILL REMAIN on the Active Roster, as a #4 or #5 WR. He is a Special Teams player and will be kept on the Roster for that purpose.

Just some thoughts.

Depends what kind of contract we sign him too. League minimum...we could always cut him or Patton.

But I think we keep them if we sign them for the season. Hubbard or Steptoe or Both could be gone by the end of training camp??? We'll see.

But it might be very useful for both Robiskie and MoMas to learn how to use their Size in the NFL as Bennett has been using it to his advantage with no real speed for seasons. I think a useful mentor in that regard.

He's coming in for a visit, dosent say anything about veteran leadership, hopefully Tucker / J.Lewis Stieny ect can handle that, if we have to bring in a guy off the streets for leadership were in sad shape.

Bennet is being brought in to see if he is 1. healthy, & 2. affordable gotta bring him in to see in person, no sence signing a WR who runs with a limp. Might look fine on the internet but in person have one leg 6 inchs short than the other.

If in minicamps, OTA's and TC,, we see promise from our two 2nd round picks and Braylon and Cribbs or Steptoe, Patton will be cut anyway.. If Bennett is here, he'll suffer the same fate.

IF.... big word isn't it.

Well, the talent USED to be there...we all saw that in Tennessee....in St. Louis, they wanted him to be the next Isaac Bruce...and that just ain't hapening.....2 different styles of players....but as long as his leg is good, and he isn't expecting to be the highest paid WR in the NFL, I absolutely think we bring him in...he is the same mold of JJ...better all around WR IMO....and we could finally have a relable WR corp again.....cut Stallworth, and Steptoe..unless we need ST players......

Why not? Works for me...
Except I don't want Cribbs to be a WR... although it'd be nice to get the ball in his hands somehow cuz he's a playmaking beast.

I really don't think that the Browns are looking at Cribbs as a wide out, nor should they be. I think they see him as a gadget play guy and special teamer. I think IF we sign Bennett, it'll look like this:

Braylon
Bennett
Robiskie
Patten
Massaquoi

I thin k that is exactely how they should look...if not Bennett, talk to Marvin Harrison.....I'm sure he has reduced his asking price now that the draft is over....and I don't think he is quite ready to retire...his name alone will draw attention off of Braylon......
