I really don't think that the Browns are looking at Cribbs as a wide out, nor should they be. I think they see him as a gadget play guy and special teamer. I think IF we sign Bennett, it'll look like this:

Braylon
Bennett
Robiskie
Patten
Massaquoi

that would be nice but.....

we could be short personnel somewhere else.

where do we cut?
4 CBs?
3 safeties?
8 LB's ?
8 OL ?

etc.......

And Cribbs is expecting to play some safety this year...

Hmmm...

Something to watch for this weekend and during the rest of minicamps.

"something to watch for"... sure, but not something to expect. I don't think it's that east to play safety in the NFL.

Bennet is also a former QB. Mangini was excited about trying to grab Pat White (another QB/WR) and now with that not happening suddenly Bennet is visiting.

Whatever Mangini has planned for our offense this year he seems to be busting his hump to add another guy like Cribbs that can fill a dual role throwing the ball.

First I heard this about Pat White. Where did you hear it?

Question to anyone reffering to Paul Hubbard.

Didn't he look pretty good last year in training camp and pre-season? I thought he did.

But i'm wondering if the reason he didn't play is because of Romeo's not playing rookies ordeal.

Could step up this year, probably not just saying.

The only thing I remember him doing was running a fly route and making a nice catch.

I remember hearing that he was very raw at route running and his hands weren't very natural as well. We'll see, he could develop if he has worked hard on the JUGS/coaching part of it.

you had a good run Hank.

Pre-draft reports had Mangini & associates visiting/scouting White at WV. I remember it specificly because I was really surprised that not only would we consider a 2nd round QB but that EM made the trip himself.

Here we go, I found the article:

Cleveland Browns to work out W.Va. QB White
by By Mary Kay Cabot
Tuesday March 24, 2009, 4:46 PM
The Browns will conduct a private workout Wednesday at West Virginia with Mountaineers quarterback Pat White, an NFL source said.

White, a second-round projection in the NFL draft according to NFL Network's Mike Mayock, is viewed by a handful of teams as a quarterback but more as a wide receiver/halfback/returner in the mold of a Josh Cribbs or Antwan Randle El.

White, one of the more intriguing prospects in the draft, could be available to the Browns with either of their two second-round picks, the 36th overall or the 50th.

It's not yet known if the Browns are looking at White as a quarterback or more of a Wildcat-style tailback. Perhaps they're viewing him as an alternative to Cribbs, who's seeking a lucrative new contract.

White (6-1, 197) has also had private workouts with the Patriots and Broncos.

I smile every time I hear about hands getting better by working with a JUGS machine.

Sorry.

Watching Hubbard in camp, showed he was nothing but a project. The kid is a track star not a WR IMO. He has terrible hands and can't run routes. He'll be the first one cut if you ask me.

He looked very athletic, but we all know athletes don't always make great football players.

If we take some time with him, he has some potential, but he has some work to do. I like his size/speed/leaping ability. He just needs to work on his route running, blocking and consistency catching the ball. I wouldn't be upset if he sat on the PS for another year and see what we get next season.

Well, I think it's kind of a leap to say Mangini was excited just by reading that article. But since he's not a Brown it doesn't really matter now.

I do think it would have been interesting to have Pat White here, though.

And just MaryKay said 2nd round didn't mean so...actually at the time of our visit he was considered a 2nd day prospect and possibly we were looking at him for that 104 pick??? As you said, we had our opportunity at 36 and didn't pull the trigger. So what we do know for sure...M/K wanted Robiskie more than Pat White.

... plus we already have our hybrid offensive jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none guy and special teams ace in Josh Cribbs. Where would we have put a guy like Pat White? He's a great athlete, but I'm not sure where he would have fit here.

yeah, I agree.....If we would have drafted Pat White in the 2nd round.....I would have went NUTS........ ....... ........but I do hope that we can ink Bennett........that would make our WR pretty good IMO.....

Fair enough, but other articles about the same visit had Mangini personally attending. I don't recall ever hearing about a HC visiting a prospect for a private workout if they anticipated them being a late round pick.

So I took from that a sense of urgency by EM. Who knows what our second 2nd(50th) would have been if the Dolphins hadn't grabbed him at 44.

Veteran WR Drew Bennett, who was released by the Rams after two injury-plagued, unproductive seasons, worked out for the Falcons on Thursday. Bennett joined St. Louis after five solid seasons with Tennessee. Of his 307 career catches, only 34 came with St. Louis — he had just one last season because of injuries to the lower extremities.

Atlanta is looking for depth at wide receiver following the trade of third-year wide receiver Laurent Robinson to St. Louis before the draft.

– Steve Wyche

I guess we aren't the only ones interested. I thought the Falcons already had Finneran though, wouldn't Bennett put them over the league maximum for white wide receivers.
