Just spoke to one of my guys and he gave me some behind-the-scenes insight on why the Jets officially released quarterback Brett Favre from the reserve/retired list on Tuesday night.

First, following the draft, Favre asked the Jets for his unconditional release for a "second time," I'm told. If you remember, when he retired last February, Favre and his agent, Bus Cook, denied they had asked the Jets for his official release.

But now with Mark Sanchez in the fold, Favre figured he could force the Jets' hand and gain his release.

Secondly, the Jets didn't want any "Favre drama" hanging over their heads with Sanchez trying to find his way. If Sanchez struggled this summer in training camp, for instance, the club didn't want the specter of a possible return by Favre hanging over their heads.

Sure, the Jets didn't have to grant Favre his wish, but they had nothing to gain by holding onto him and trying to get some compensation (he cost them a third-round pick) if a team wanted to sign him. They felt a mid-round draft pick (at best) wasn't worth the headache.

Although Favre said in a statement on Tuesday and through his agent again on Wednesday that he has no intention of returning to football next season, his actions -- asking for his release from the Jets twice -- don't jive with his words.

During his time in New York, I really liked Favre as a person, but as facts continue to emerge, it seems like he has a hidden agenda at times. Why else would Favre ask for his release a second time if he didn't have any intentions on coming out of retirement -- and playing for the Vikings, perhaps?

If he never plans on playing another down in the NFL, would it really matter at all which team held his rights?

It's appears as though Favre is another in the long line of athletes who don't know when enough is enough.

Mangini will invite Favre to TC as a mentor to both Quinn and Anderson which has already been reported. In mid August when both DA and BQ are looking subpar, Favre will get the itch to put on a uniform once again. Mangini will love the idea of Favre taking snaps under center and we'll have a full blown controversy in Browns town.

I hope to the great God above this doesn't happen, but with Favre you never know.

Mangini doesn't want Favre to play QB for the Browns, we can all stop worrying about it.

I don't know why, or even if, it really is being entertained to "bring him in as a mentor,..."

Wouldn't a drunk Kosar, who actually might relish the job, be better than this mind-twister ??

I think Mangini just suggested it one day, you know.. bring him in as a guest & not to be a mentor or any BS like that. I doubt he's looking for Favre to be a guest instructor.

They should make a reality show out of this guy!

If he goes anywhere it has to be Minnesota. I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would want a 40 year old QB, other than the fact all you have to QB your team is Travaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels. Hmm, after careful consideration, maybe Farve isn't that bad a choice after all!

If he goes anywhere, its to the Vikes. It sounds like they are already contacting him to see if there is any interest.

from profootballtalk:
Plane Flies From Minneapolis To Hattiesburg, And Back Again
Posted by Mike Florio

It probably means nothing.

But, let’s face it, Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport is hardly a major hub of transportation.

Only five flights arrived there today, and only six departed.

One of the arrivals came from Minneapolis, and one of the departures headed back there.

The plane from Minneapolis arrived at 9:11 a.m. local time, and left at 4:14 p.m. local time.

It probably has nothing to do with one of the more famous residents of Hattiesburg. After all, he’s retired from playing football, and he has no intention of coming back.

Favre said so himself. “It’s all rumor. [There’s] no reason for it.”

Oh, wait. That was last year, when Favre shot down in early July talk that he wanted to come back.

Since he was telling the truth then, he’s surely telling the truth

If Favre has anything left, he is a better QB then anything the vikes have on the roster. He knows the offense. Get ready for some more drama.

I am putting up "No Cheeseheadz Aloud" signs at Ohio's borders. This dolt's "Now ye see me, now ye don't"
routine has worn me out. Lost respect; not a trade part, not a Brown any more than he was a Jet, especially down the stretch. Wanted that attitude thang AND losing some more we would have kept Garcia.

BS. When is it enough for an athlete? When he no longer has enough value to be signed by a team. Legacies are just fantasies concocted by fans who are deluded enough to equate a sport with something far more grand. The NFL is a business. Favre is selling his services, and it is up to the market to determine whether or not he has enough value to continue. Calling him an a-hole for participating in the business is petty and shows a lack of intellectual maturity on your part.

I've always had mixed feelings on Favre. Living here in Wisconsin I never thought he was as great as the people around here believed he was. That said after watching what the Browns have trotted out for the past decade I would have loved to see #4 playing behind center.

He might be a Jag but so are many other athletes. That doesn't mean he can't play or make a team better. I know some people give Favre the blame for the Jets falling apart at the end of the season but not many give him the credit for them being in contention in the first place.

Farve has nothing left. no team in their right mind would bring him in.

A team that feels it is a QB away from superbowl contention should consider bringing in Favre. And only if they have the intestinal fortitude to bench him if he gets injured during the season (which the Jets did not do last year).

Favre played better than Sage Rosenfels and Tavaris Jackson before his injury. So, yes, I could see the Vikings giving him a shot.

Favre can play till he is 50 as long as a team believes he is valuable as their starting QB. Some athletes may have personal reasons for wanting to "go out on top" and they can do so if they wish. But if Favre wants to keep playing he can do so and it doesn't say a damn thing about his character.

Wanting to keep playing doesn't destroy character at all. You're right there.

However, that's not the case with Favre. IIRC, he came really close to retiring and didn't let the team know until the last minute. Then he retired. Then he "unretired" and whined about not being able to go back to GB. Then he went to the Jets. Then he retires again and now he wants to "unretire."

He wasn't exactly being quiet throughout the entire process either.

I wondered that too when he was a rookie, my buddy teached me how to prnounce it this way

Brett is from Mississippi, so to get the proper pronounciation you have to stick a big wad of chewin tabacoo in your mouth, a beer in one hand while you sticking you head in that fridge on your front porch, now go do that

This is such a non-story.

Unless Favre really wants to convey himself as even more of a drama queen, he'll stay retired.

I don't think he cares what people think of him. I think he just wakes up one morning and says to himself, "I wanna play some football."

So he does it.

I see him playing for the Vikings.

I'd be ticked at Favre if I was a Packer fan right now. Talk to the 49ers or Broncos or something, NOT a division rival . . . .

IIRC, he wants to stick it to Green Bay because he feels he was wronged by how they treated him when they let him go.

As much as Packers fans love the guy, I don't think they would welcome him back to Lambeau with open arms if he was with the Vikings.

That would be like Kosar going to the Steelers just to spite us.

If favre ends up playing .. he will be on the Vikes ... and spite will play a part in it ... but also the fact that the Vikes have a VERY VERY GOOD TEAM all ready assembled and are trhe BEST FIT FOR HIM if he wants to try and win..

all they need is a QB ... they've got a very good D .. a decent OL and a GREAT RUNNING GAME .... there not real good at WR but those guys become alot better with a QB ...

IT IS A PERFECT FIT FOR BRETT .... the fact he also gets to stick up Thompson's and McCarthy's ass is just an added bonus and not EVEN CLOSE TO BEING HIS SOLE MOTIVATION ...

yeah but what about the bicep tear, the one doctors told him last winter he needed surgery on if he wanted to play again? The one Favre hasn't had fixed.

He'll be worse than he was last year, and last year he was mediocre.

OK, since my Mangini Jet-love conspiracy didn't pan out...

Who thinks Childress has been sandbagging at QB waiting for Favre?

Look at the vikes current QB situation .. I;d roll the dice with brett's bicep .. but then again .. If I were the Vikes I'd have an ACTUAL NFL QB on my team by now ..

I'd have went hard after Garcia ... with the supporting cast .. thats all they need .. a GAME MANAGER ... abd Jeff is that ..

If I were the Vikings GM or coach, I'd want Favre...especially after looking at the current QB depth chart.

Something tells me his arm isn't 100% and he won't be able to put all the work in camp and preseason. I don't think he'll sign.

Good thought, and I think Garcia is such a competitor he woulda jumped at a chance to go to Minnesota.

well i'm pretty sure vikings wanted favre and favre wanted vikings last year too. i used to just roll my eyes at news of favre but i'm really enjoying it this time. i really hope that favre joins the vikings and pisses everyone off. in the process, he lied to so many news sources, most recently espn's trent dilfer, and his true nature has shown. he expected to be recognized as a player/GM, didn't get it, and now wants to stick it to the packers, the team where he had all his success. i hope he plays for the vikings and ruins is legacy. the guy is a TO qb.

saying he wants another ring is laughable, this is all about revenge.

Quote:

One day after sending a one-word text saying “NO” he wouldn’t return to play football, Brett Favre does a 180 and decides to meet with the Minnesota Vikings about becoming their starting quarterback.

It’s time we stop taking Favre at his word. It has become clear that beneath that easygoing, aw-shucks country veneer, lays a shrewd businessman whose cunning is as keen as his laser-lock passes.

Like so many fourth-quarter comebacks, Favre has once again defied the odds by securing his free agency and coming one step closer to getting his ultimate wish: REVENGE!

No longer wanting to play for a team and a town that loved him dearly, Favre clearly calculated and carved his way out of Green Bay. He no longer wanted to play for a general manager, Ted Thompson, who wouldn’t acquiesce to his many demands, ranging from coaching hires to player acquisitions. And now, a year after toying with the New York Jets and costing Eric Mangini his job, Favre has shown he will let nothing stop him from getting his biggest win yet.

Favre is motivated by his enmity for the Packers and their corporate leadership. Driven to have the last word, Favre is willing to play for the Packers’ hated rival and wear the enemy’s colors.

I believe the aging warrior still has some magic left in that weathered old body. But as summer turns to fall, and fall gives way to a bitter winter cold, Favre’s hatred will cool the same, and so will his passes. It ended badly in 2007 with two INTs versus the New York Giants in the NFC title game. It ended even worse a year later with three INTs in the Jets’ 2008 season finale versus the Miami Dolphins.

He once played for the love of the game, and we loved him for the way he played, which was magical. He now plays for something more sinister and unnatural, which leaves us scratching our heads and asking, “Brett, what are you doing?”

I don't understand why he'd have anything against the Packers.
The Packers sooner or later had to develop Aaron Rogers for the long-term benefit of the team. I'd just as soon Favre retire, but I actually don't care.
