favre has a vendetta against ted thompson because favre had a lot of input on personnel (wanted randy moss, went to NE and destroyed everyone) and favre wanted someone else besides mike mccarthy when the head coaching position opened up. essentially, he thought of himself as more than just a player and felt spited that his requests (Read: demands) were not taken more seriously by the FO or that the FO did not make the requests happen. IIRC, they tried to get moss but it didn't work out.

...and the Packers didn't accept him back with open arms after unretiring for the 88th time. They held their ground and said no. Favre was angered by this......why? I guess he thinks he's bigger than the Packers. He's above the rules (or even his word).

And when it was obvious he was going to play with the Packers last year, they tried blocking his move to the Vikes, the team he really wanted to play with last year.

Those are all the reasons why.......but he still comes off as a prima donna to me. He's Dan Marino with one Super Bowl ring.....but the media, some fans and Favre himself act like he's Montana+Elway+Otto+Young+JimBrown+Sanders+Payton+ETC... like he's the best to ever play the game at any position (that BS of him just "always having fun out there" like nobody else does that). One Super Bowl ring, a bunch of playoff flameouts and some passing records. Would I have wanted him to be a Brown? Sure.....but even I wouldn't think he belongs on the Mount Rushmore of NFL great QB's.

He might not be in my own Top 10 quarterbacks of the last 20 years, let alone all-time. Although i guess QBs in the last 20 years would make up a big chunk of the all-time greats.

Manning, Brady, Marino, Elway, Aikman, Montana, Steve Young, Jim Kelly....

There's just a few off the top of my head, guys I think of more highly than Favre.

edit: Being the all-time INT leader is nothing to brag about, either.

His accomplishments are diminished every time he un-retires.

I hope Brett comes back again. I can certainly understand the difficulty with hanging it up for good---so I'm not going to get down on him for all the retire, un-retire, keep playing, switch team stuff. Whatever he wants to do. Sometimes I wish the media would give it a rest---but again, Brett Favre is always a story---and has been the past three or four offseasons.

I hope he comes back and plays for Minny. I think that with the running game they have and an experienced QB---they could really turn the corner this year.

Report: Favre to remain retired

The curious case of Brett Favre's will-he-or-won't-he flirtation with the Minnesota Vikings may be nearing an end.

And, according to one report, he won't.

Favre told Vikings coach Brad Childress that he will remain retired, a source close to the team told Yahoo! Sports on Thursday. The Yahoo! report said that Favre told Childress of his decision in a phone call, and that he could "publicly explain his decision soon."

The report came on a day when the whereabouts of Childress were of great interest. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that Childress left town Wednesday night on a commercial flight and was scheduled to meet with Favre sometime Thursday at the player's home in Hattiesburg.

However, Thursday morning, KMSP-TV in Minneapolis aired video showing a man appearing to be Childress entering Vikings headquarters.

Childress and the Vikings wanted to gauge Favre's level of interest in returning to the NFL to play for the Vikings. The future Hall of Famer quit football a second time after leading the New York Jets to a 9-7 record last season. Favre was hampered late in the year by a torn biceps in his throwing arm.

Favre wanted to play for the Vikings last season, but the Green Bay Packers specifically eliminated their NFC North rivals as a destination when they negotiated the trade that sent Favre to the Jets last August.

Although Favre said he would not return next season, the Jets released him after drafting Mark Sanchez in the first round. Favre could see the Vikings as the opportunity to fulfill the goal he was deprived of last season -- winning a Super Bowl.

The Vikings have Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels to compete for the starting quarterback position in training camp.

With Jackson battling injuries last season, journeyman Gus Frerotte started 11 games and led the Vikings in passing.

Minnesota finished 10-6 to capture the NFC North but lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round of the playoffs in a game started by Jackson.

its been speculated that Farve would want nothing to do with OTA's- something the vikes would be mandating. Well, this story won't come to an end until August. I will be curious to see if he reports to training camp after once again changing his mind about retirement. It would be un-favre like to decide now that he is going to play- where is the drama in a quick decision??

this story won't be over until we have two consecutive seasons of favre staying retired. until then, this is just another wrinkle in plays for leverage.

suppose that is true, but if he doesn't play this year, that should be it. About the oldest QB i can think (off the top of my head) who retired and came back and retired and came back.... was Vinny Testaverde. I don't recall Vinny every sitting out an entire season???? Anyways, if Favre turns down the vikes (assuming that they want him)- where else could he possibly play and have a shot at the superbowl. The vikes are set to make a major playoff run, except for the QB.

it is no secret that favre wanted to play for the vikings last season and this one. there is no other team he'd play for. they can win now but more importantly, he can stick it to thompson/mccarthy twice in one season.

make no mistake about it, this is purely leverage play. favre and the vikings know they are coming together, but at this time, it's all up to favre. while favre needs to show he's healthy, reports all said that, if he were to play for the vikings, they want him to show up for all the minicamps and sessions. lord favre would not go for that. expects the red carpet treatment, which is the driving force for his need for revenge against thompson and mccarthy. he needs to be told that those sessions are purely optional, and they'd do everything to accomodate his wishes. once that happens, he'll sign.

then i'll laugh when green bay smacks him around.

I think his arm just isn't the same and that's why he's not going to play...obviously his late play last season had a lot to do with that bicep tear. And I'm sure if there was quality game left in Favre he'd take that Vikings job (perfect situation - old OC, ready to win team needing a QB) - his arm just went Pwang...and I think that is why FAvre will remain retired this time.

Report: Minnesota Vikings will sign Brett Favre if he won't need major surgery

MIAMI - SEPTEMBER 07: Brett Favre #4 of the New York Jets throws a 56-yard touchdown pass to Jerricho Cotchery #89 in the first quarter against the Miami Dolphins at Dolphin Stadium on September 7, 2008 in Miami, Florida. The touchdown pass was Favre's first as quarterback of the Jets. (Photo by Marc Serota/Getty Images)RelatedThe courtship of Brett Favre

ESPN is reporting this afternoon that, according to a source, Favre had X-rays of his right shoulder sent to the Minnesota Vikings for evaluation. The Vikings received the X-rays on Thursday and are in the process of evaluating them, according to the report. If Favre needs major surgery, he would not return to play this season, but if it's anything less than that, he would sign with the Vikings.

One of the biggest questions surrounding Favre's possible return to play for the Vikings is the health of his throwing arm. Favre has a partially torn biceps tendon.

Favre's agent, Bus Cook, told ESPN he's not aware of any X-rays being sent to the Vikings. Cook said that for Favre to return, he would have to be mentally and physically ready to come back, as well as having the desire. He's not sure all three of those things are in place, according to the report.

The source also told ESPN that Favre is motivated to return to play against the Green Bay Packers.

The report comes after Yahoo! Sports reported Thursday that Favre told Vikings coach Brad Childress he wants to remain retired and would not play for Minnesota. Favre had a conversation with Childress on the phone and informed him of the decision, according to the report, which cited a source close to the team.

NFL Network is reporting today that Childress and Favre have talked at least once on the phone but that the conversation was exploratory and informal. There's been no decision made as to whether Favre will play for the Vikings, according to NFL Network.
The Jets released Favre April 28, making him an unrestricted free agent. He's retired, but there continues to be speculation that he would play for the Vikings, despite assertions from his agent as recently as Thursday that Favre is not interested in a return.

sorry, eo, didn't see your reply.

with the new reports, i think things are pretty consistent. i don't think favre's ego would let him think he no longer has the arm to play. he makes it clear he doesn't want "major" surgery but aside from that his need for revenge is so strong that he'd step all over his legacy and his fans to get it.

at this point, there was only one article that stated that favre decided to stay retired and that he'd publicly annouce it soon. no annoucement yet. since then, espn and nfl network both disputed the report and said the same thing: the guy is talking to the vikings, doesn't want "major surgery" but is willing to go under the knife for smaller stuff, and the one, consistent point, is his need for revenge is huge. the only thing driving him is the need to stick it to the packers...if i'm a packer guy and he plays for the vikings, while it's known that the guy wanted to stick it to his old team, i NEVER welcome him back. he can go all the way to the hall of fame representing his favre-ite team: himself. from then on, i take a pig and dress him in a #4 jersey for years to come.

I can think of about a dozen pro sports pesonalities that have done this exact thing over and over and revenge had little to do with any of them coming back. The media is the only outlet that reports this stuff, they need Favrapallooza every year to keep their ratings up in the offseason now.
