Wow - do we really have fans that are this dumb?? To base their opinion on a picture of a coach showing (what probably is) and over-head picture to his line?!?!

I'm hoping he was just having fun with a funny pic.... I really hope so

I dont see what the fuss is about, the Texans were more devoid of talent on the Oline than we were, and Jeff Davidson, this big guru couldn't do squat here. The simple fact is, if you don't have players capable of executing which they didnt, they aren't going to be made all-pro by a position coach. As i've said in other posts, coaching is overated, ala my previous statement. Great coaching is worth nothing if you have turds that can't execute.

And for everyone wanting the Broncos line coach, no one else came barking up that guys tree so why are we in arms over a guy no one else wants either?

recapping, i'm not mad over this, i'll let it play out and see. These position coaches are mostly interchangeable, (Zierlein did horrible here and he got promoted elsewhere). Now i would be more apprehensive if the Texans had 4 all pros on their line and there line was horrible, ok then. But this guy had 5 all-scrubs and you saw the result, just like you have seen the result here in the past.

This is exactly why the decision is football equivalent of hari-kari.

Politically the decision flies like a lead balloon.

You must be hosing me? How does one overlook 68 sacks? And this is an upside. I am astounded. Disgusted. This was the best available? maybe this FO has gotten so horrid that we are like a last ditch colony for the oones yelling 'Unclean! Unclean!' or sumpin'. This is the top choice available? As bad as we need a omerun tater in this department? Circle the wagons! I am pulling up a chair 'cause the tapdancing in this floor show is gonna be fabulous!

Sometimes fandom is just flat-out idiotic.

All true but sometimes front offices drop the ball just like Braylon or Nothcutt. Look no further than Butch Davis as all powerful GM, coach, chief cook & bottle washer or the Savage vs Collins debacle. I don't advocate management by fan opinion poll but in this case I'll make an exception. We have a fading fan base starving for the Browns to show any signs of life and what do we do? Hire a coach with a giant puss filled boil on his resume to coach the most maligned/ suspect part of the team! I'm not saying the guy is bad. It's just a stupid hire PR wise.If the line fails again this year everyone will point at this guy and say see what did they expect? Oh, those bonehead Browns what a sad franchise they are! I find it impossible to believe this guy is so head and shoulders above other candidates that he's worth the fallout.Stupid move or bold gamble? Only time will tell.At this point I think it was an unnecessary gamble that sets us up to look real foolish.

But he can take mediocre teams to the playoffs. Why? Because he hires an excellent coaching staff and makes the "system" fit the teams strengths. It's called "coaching them up". Of course, since we haven't seen that aruond here,I can understand why it appears to be a vague concept to many.

The loss of so many of his coaches to other teams in the NFL.

While dramatic, it's untrue. Where is this "fading fanbase" that you speak of? Everything I see points towards a sold out stadium as often as any other and a franchise valued better than most which aren't perennial winners.

So what's more important: Making a good PR move or hiring a good coach?

I'll take option #2, PR be damned, and we have absolutely no proof that this guy can't coach. It's very convenient to point to 68 sacks and say he sucks, but it's FAR more telling to point towards waiver-wire guys like Ephraim Salaam, stiffs like Chester Pitts, and rookies like Eric Winston as the reasons why the line gave up 68 sacks.

We're not talking about a guy who nobody wanted. Saban was able to lure Hudson Houck to Miami, and Houck is one of the great O-line coaches in the game. Saban wanted this guy to coach his O-line in Bama, but he wanted back into the NFL. By the way, Houck, with a bunch of stiffs in Miami, couldn't make them good.

Honestly Mo, you're after a PR move over a coaching move, and I can't begin to figure out why..........

Well...His NFL Resume looks putrid. BUT

We all want a "proven" head coach, running our team. We want a guy with experience. And yea, guys make mistakes when they coach, and thats how they get better.

Sure I'm a bit skeptical of this pick, because the Texans line was VERY bad. But like with Chud. I'm willing to let it play out.

I mean Belichek had an awful record here, and look at now.

The problem is that the hiring does not pass the sniff test. It stinks. The Browns have not had a glorious return to the NFL, and one area that everyone points to is OL. RAC has not demonstrated that he can be an effective coach on the offensive side of the ball. Phil has not demonstrated that he can put together an OL or a team. So bringing in an OL coach whos experience is with a team that has had worse problems than Cleveland cannot be rationalized.

You're right, Hudson Houck can't make the Miami line any better or turn LJ Shelton into an all-pro. But he is the exact type of OL coach that could be hired to address the issue at OL and would recieve a favorable media reaction. I think he will stay in Miami, he worked with Cam before going to Miami.

So Phil can "damn the torpedos" and move ahead, but if this thing does not improve it will be just cause to pull the trigger on him or RAC sooner than later.

Eric Winston was drafted last year, and did not play for this guy.

Houch going back to college would never happen. He makes enough $$ as many OC's and is probably worth every cent.

The media will always find something negative to write about... it's what they do...

I think it's a better hire than most give credit for.

I am not saying he is going to turn our offensive line into "Titans" but I think he will do a lot better that most of you guys are saying.

Here's the only other report of this hiring, but Saban (not that his word means much) confirmed it.
I expect it will be announced today after Savage has a chance to return to Cleveland and call a presser.
The man has experience, but is getting pounded for the sack total Houston gave up. As the old saying goes "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear." He had no talent to work with there. It didn't matter who the coach was.
I really feel we will address the line in a major way this year and give this man some talent to prove his worth.

UA Assistant Leaves for Browns Staff

By BamaMag.com

Posted Jan 28, 2007

Nick Saban confirmed on Sunday a report that one of his assistants is leaving the University of Alabama for another job, according the a release from the University of Alabama.

Nick Saban announced tonight that assistant coach Steve Marshall has left the Crimson Tide football staff to take a position with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for Steve,” Saban said. “It’s a shame that it didn’t work out for him here, but I wish him well.”

Prior to his brief stint with the Crimson Tide Marshall coached at several colleges and in the NFL. Marshall spent the 2006 season out of coaching after serving two seasons (2004-05) on the staff of the Houston Texans as an offensive line assistant. In 2004, Marshall oversaw the offensive tackles for the Texans, and then he took over complete control of the offensive line during the 2005 season. Prior to joining the Texans, Marshall spent the 2000-03 seasons as offensive line coach at the University of Colorado. Marshall has also coached at North Carolina, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Virginia

U also have to have SOMETHING TO COACH UP..While it's debateable how medicore those teams were..place them against the Browns and the talent level is not even comparable..

I'll give yu that ATTACK.
But getting "the most potential" out of the talent you have and playing to your strengths seperate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to coaches. There is a something to be said for that.

Here's the thing with me Pit..give the Browns talent level that is on par with teams who qualify for the playoffs and if they have losing seasons than i look at the two things..are the coaches coaching them up(getting the max out of them) or are the players underachieveing?
It's easier to scrutinize when U have talent then when U have very little. And your coaches aren't even on the same page..

I don't really disagree with you. I was simply responding to the question of- Why Parcells can't take *every team he coaches* to the SB"?

And we come up with pretty much the same conclusion. The talent level isn't the same on all of those teams.

But look at how quickly he can fill holes and develop players. That hasn't seemed to be the case here under any coach we've had since we came back in 99. I think we've had some "raw talent" but never had coaches that could harness and develop that talent.

Out of curiosity,do you feel that a drafted player with "solid potential" will end up with the same production and development no matter what coaching staff they play under? Or would you say "how" their potential is developed under a coaching staff could very well be critical in their development and production?

I mean I think we both agree that finding the potential talent is key,but what about how they're coached after they're drafted? I mean are the vast majority of players we've drafted really that bad? Or is it the coaching system to some degree?

Let's not forget that he took over as Offensive Line coach from in Mid-September 2005 when they release Chris Palmer. So like Davidson, he was basically using someone elses procedures and training to keep continuity during the season.

No not all the time..some players are so good and determined they will get the most..however ...some coaches are really good effective coaches WHO know how to tap into a player to get the max out of him..
Also the player has to be coachable

Or would you say "how" their potential is developed under a coaching staff could very well be critical in their development and production?

Yes and it's intertwined in my comment ..if the player wants to excel and has the right coaching , he will reach his potiential barring injury.

.. What I don't understand is Fans trashing Fans .. You know the idiot & moron stuff .. Yet year in and year out ( since 99 ) the FO. puts crap on the field . Yet they know more , they are the Educated Football guys .. In Savage We Trust ??? .. Not yet , Not in my book ! .. Time may make me eat my words ( more wins than loss , win the division , shoot I'll stop right there ) .. I hope so ..

.. The NFL. is a small community ; Wonder how Phil and CO. are viewed right now . I want him , and more important " MY BROWNS " to retake their place in the Football legends , where they once were & belong !

I think "the fans trashing fans" thing comes from raw emotion and that "strong desire" like you stated that you have about wanting to see the Browns succeed. Being very loyal and dedicated as fans,it brings out the emotions in everyone. When you combine that with all of our frustration since 99,you have all of the ingrediants that breeds volatility.

And as far as anyone we've brought into our FO since 99 being "great football minds"? That's quite debatable. Yes,to some extent they all are. But to what extent and their limitations are yet to be seen.

ie.....Butch Davis. Would he have been a fine HC had he not been trying to "run the whole shooting match"? If we had in place a proven GM,would he have been a better HC? I have "a gut feeling" he might have been.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

People said the same thing about Davidson as OC, yet the Panthers thought enough of him to give him that job.

The rest about Opie, RAC, and a non-glorious return is all fluff compared to the reality of the situation here.

We've all excused RAC in the win's and losses column because of lack of talent. The Panthers have excused Davidson because of the lack of talent on the offensive line.

But now we're going to crucify a guy because he had WORSE talent than we did when with the Texans?

It's unreal.

See ...when a coach leaves here and goes to green pastures it's because he was actually good ..hidden among trash..
But if a coach comes here from a trashy team, he's just as corroded as the trash he left..

Toad, Pit, Attack, CoachB and everyone..

It's ok to disagree (I can't believe this is coming from me )

Example:

Some read Savages comments as running and hiding or passing the buck.. Some think he's not running and not hiding, but just calling it as it is.

The truth of the matter is this, not one of us, (even those who claim to have connections within the browns organization ) know for sure what the real deal is,,, we just have out beliefs..

That's it..

SO ,,,what say we all get together and have a beer..

I propose, two weeks from today,,, Las Vegas,,,,, Paris hotel lobby bar.... are ya in? I'll buy the first round

I know you're joking, but that's the type of thinking that I flat refuse to acknowledge.

Maybe he's a bad coach. Maybe Opie is an idiot for hiring him. Maybe because we kept RAC we couldn't lure a better line coach here. Maybe he's the gem that Saban thinks he is.

None of that matters until

A) We get some NFL-starting material linemen
B) He gets a couple of months with those guys to prove his medal.

I cannot begin to judge a guy when he inherited the Texans line. As bad as our line's have been these past couple of years, the Texans line has been far worse, and it doesn't have a damned thing to do with coaching.
