at Ohio State he was a good pass rusher and run stopper, and made some great plays when they needed them under pressure. I was surprised he wasn't drafted in 2007. (does he have some off-field issues that i am not aware of?) He is the kind of player i like-doesn't nec. have great stats or speed, just PLAYS FOOTBALL). I think he can make the team, if he wants to.

IIRC, he weighed in at about 295 ... might be a DE in the 3-4? I do remember him making some big plays, but he was maybe overshadowed by Quinn Pitcock.

And most of his big plays/stops were late in games-exactly what we need in a backup lineman, wouldn't you say?

This is awsome. Finally we get to see a real football coach.
We're going to win some games this year, boys. Watching the video on these guys. I really think M/K is putting together a team we're all going to be proud to call the Browns. Good players, good kids, well coached and disciplined.
I'm totally psyched.

It always seemed like Pitcock got the glory, while Patterson did the dirty work of eating blocks ... kind of like back in the day - probably before your time - when Jerry Sherk was blowing up plays in the backfield for the Browns while Walter Johnson took on the triple team to free Sherk up. Not sure I'm right about that (re: Pitcock & Patterson), but its my impression.

Hey, old-timer  ... damn betcha those were the days. Jerry Sherk and Walter Johnson at DT, along with Joe Jones and Jack Gregory at DE was the best pass-rush D-Line I ever saw in Brown-and-Orange. They weren't bad against the run either.

Noticed in the presser today that Mangini has Veikune starting out inside. I thought that was interesting. Also, he insists that all the DBs know all the positions, so that corners can play safety and safeties can play corner. I'm wondering if he has a similar philosophy for LBs. Will certain 3rd downs feature Wimbley, Hall, Veikune & DQ for example?

I figure (hope) we'll see alot more creativity on D.
The personnel certainly seem to be here to run a number of looks.
Maybe an improved O will keep them fresh and sound fundamentals
will bear fruit!

I LOVE What I'm hearing about Mangini and what he is doing in The Browns' Camp.
However, will this be yet another episode of getting our hopes up? Hard to tell until Week 1.

1. Eric Mangini seems comfortable as he talks about his expectations for players, his plans for the team -- and yes, how he does respect the Browns' culture. Jim Brown will continue to be around. Paul Warfield and Brown will talk to the team. When you walk into the lobby, there are now huge plaques of the Browns Hall of Famers -- where the public, coaches and players pass them each day.
2. The media is allowed to watch only part of the practice, so it's hard to make many judgments -- especially since they are not in pads and there is no hitting. I'm intrigued by Bryan Williams, and I believe that holds true of the Browns. Mangini loves "football players," meaning guys who can play different positions and want to be on the field all the time. Joshua Cribbs -- who talked to the rookies Saturday night -- has already emerged as one of the coach's favorites. I really believe Williams is in the mold. The Buchtel High and University of Akron product returned kicks, played running back as a junior (gaining 724 yards) and safety as a senior for the Zips. In high school, he was a tremendous linebacker along with being a star running back.
3. Just wondering ... Williams averaged 30.5 yards per kickoff return (a Mid-American Conference record) at Akron. Wonder if Williams could be the kick returner, allowing Cribbs to play more on offense and defense. Yes, Mangini is still talking about some type of role on the defense for Cribbs, although he is vague about it.
4. James Davis has the look of an NFL running back. The Clemson product had 1,000-yard rushing seasons in 2006 and 2007. One top NFL scout (not with the Browns) told me that Davis suffered from in-season coaching change, a poor offensive line and the rise of star running back C.J. Spiller (who may become a future first-rounder). His point was pay no attention to Davis' stats dropping to 751 yards as a senior. He was a good citizen in the midst of the turmoil, and he could be a nice surprise in the sixth round.
5. Mangini isn't the only one impressed with the speed of second-rounder David Veikune. He is all of 6-2, 257, but moves like a natural linebacker, rather than a lineman who early in his college career even played some nose tackle. He also won some money off Mangini by diagramming a complicated blitz formation in front of the entire team, explaining what each player is supposed to do.
6. While second-rounders Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi receive most of the attention among the receivers, Lance Leggett has attracted some notice. The 6-3 receiver was on the practice squad last season, so it's natural that he'd seem more comfortable in this setting. But he is the kind of guy who could get a chance from the new coaches. Robiskie looks polished and savvy.
7. Mangini believes the keys to building an offensive line are left tackle and center. In his first draft with the Jets in 2006, he took both in the first round -- OSU center Nick Mangold and left tackle D'Brickshaw Ferguson. He calls them "pillars" of the line. Mangini doesn't care if others believe you should not pick a center in the first round, he called it a "critical" position at Saturday's workout. So he drafted Alex Mack in the first round, and inherited Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Thomas from the Phil Savage regime.

i love the story of veikune and how he knew all the assignments. this guy sounds awesome. smart, humble, high-motor, and intelligent. the more i hear of this guy, the more i'm glad we got him.

I second that. I just want to see what we all know is Cleveland Browns Football. Something we all have been missing since the 80's. Tough defense mixed in with a great run game.

Joshua Cribbs was one of two Browns veterans selected to address about 40 rookies at an evening function Head Coach Eric Mangini called “one of my favorite days of the year.”
Cribbs has made the same strong impression on the new regime as he did on the previous one. Mangini is openly entertaining the question: What can Cribbs be given to do that the previous regime did not explore?
Cribbs hasn’t played a down of defense in his four seasons with the Browns, but he has been digesting the system being installed by Mangini.
“I owe him a quiz,” Mangini said with a provocative smile. “He says he’s got a couple of the defenses down cold. ... We’ll see.”
Cribbs chose Kent State University because its head coach, Dean Pees, told him he could play his favorite position — quarterback. By 2005, when Cribbs was fighting to make the Browns as an undrafted rookie, Pees was a defensive assistant with the New England Patriots. The Patriots’ defensive coordinator was Mangini.
Pees believed Cribbs could have been an elite corner or safety in college. He said so during last year’s Super Bowl after he had taken over as New England’s defensive coordinator.
Now, a month short of his 26th birthday, Cribbs is getting his most extensive audition as a defensive player.
“We’re not sure whether he’ll be exclusively on offense or exclusively on defense or a little bit of both,” Mangini said.
The other current player who spoke to the rookies Saturday was Kamerion Wimbley. That was the first indication Mangini sees Wimbley, a 2006 Round 1 pick, as a vital part of the roster.
What did Mangini ask Cribbs and Wimbley to say?
“It’s more about the spirit of football,” Mangini said. “Why we play football, appreciating all the people who have come before them.”
A few bottom-of-the-roster players who finished 2008 affiliated with Romeo Crennel’s Browns practiced Saturday. They included Lance Leggett, Melila Purcell and Kurt Quarterman.
Otherwise, the weekend practice were for rookies, including a large group that treated it like a Super Bowl. They were players invited in for a three-day tryout.
Two of them, Jerry Major of Wake Forest and Michael Waddell of North Carolina, were crammed into a single locker, under laminated paper name tags, between the unoccupied stalls of veterans Shaun Rogers and Robaire Smith.
The most notable change in the locker room, perhaps, is Brady Quinn’s new stall. In the previous two seasons, Quinn’s perch was just inside the locker room entrance, a few feet from Derek Anderson’s.
Now, Quinn’s stall has moved to a place where he and Anderson can’t see each other unless they peek around a corner.

Yes, those were very optimistic scribbles all right.
Still nice to read though
Veikune in the middle on obvious passing situations WOULD give us a stronger pass-rush presence to really run some exotic blitzes. Of course we'd need someone on the outside to actually show up for that to happen 
I'm well-known as being a non-homer........the anti-homer, if you will......I look more critically at guys from OSU and UT because of all the "local" media coverage. I've thought most of the linebackers to come out of USU in the last decade were badly overrated, with the exception of Hawk. He's an ok player for the Pack, but not the impact player I thought he'd be. Anyway, Robiskie is the one guy that I think is going to surprise all the fans. No, I don't see him as being this great 1000-yard receiver, but I do see him as the kind of guy who's going to catch 4-5 balls a game for first downs or TD's. He's ready to help a team NOW, and we need help NOW. I believe, for a rookie, he's going to have a good impact.

I know - I couldn't tell you how depressed I got last year when we had progressed to having probably one of our worst TACKLING performance as a Browns team.
That week RAC stressed that they practiced tackling drills and angles to correct the problem and low n behold we did a pretty good job.
My depression came cause why weren't we doing tackling drills every practice if that is what makes them better at tackling  and as a coach you don't have to take too much time - but can make it as the daily routine even 5-10 minutes if you got a full day to go over game plans. 
JMHO - very pleased on what I'm seeing so far from Mangini
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off!
