Browns sign Mike Furrey 05.05.2009 The Cleveland Browns today signed free agent wide receiver Mike Furrey, the team announced. Furrey is a veteran of six NFL seasons, including the last three with Detroit. The 6-0, 195-pound Furrey entered the league as an undrafted college free agent with Indianapolis in 2000. He played one year with the Las Vegas Outlaws of the XFL (2001) and two years with the New York Dragons of the Arena League (2002-03) before joining St. Louis in 2003. He spent three years with the Rams before signing with the Lions in 2006. In his six NFL seasons, he has appeared in 78 games with 37 starts and accumulated 198 receptions for 2,128 yards and seven touchdowns. He also has fielded 23 punts for a 9.3-yard average and 20 kickoffs for an 18.8-yard average. In his final season with the Rams (2005), he played safety where he started 11 of 16 games and registered 55 tackles and four interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown (vs. New Orleans, 10/23). His most productive campaign occurred in 2006 when, in his first year with the Lions, he hauled in 98 passes for 1,086 yards and six touchdowns. His reception total that year led the NFC and was second in the NFL. Furrey totaled 242 receptions for 3,544 yards and 27 touchdowns in his three-year career at Northern Iowa (1997-99). He began his collegiate stint as a walk-on at Ohio State in 1995 before transferring. I remember him having a solid season a few years back, like they said above.
He could play a solid back up and depth role for us.

Good fit for a offense that lacks a savy route runner. Looks like more and more this offense is going to be tailor for Brady Quinn to be the starter.

If this signing was before the draft, I'd agree with you but not now. Rarely are players traded for other players. The Browns front office seems to think BE's value is quite high...they didn't budge on their wanting a 1st and more...so that tells me if he was traded before training camp, we'd be asking for a tier 1 players in return. And most teams don't have a surplus of tier 1 players at one position. Unless we're getting 2-3 more Jets (hahaha).
I wouldn't bet money on BE being traded at all, even after this latest signing.

I don't think Braylon's going anywhere. Just because Grossi "had a feeling" means nothing. I believe they see that Edwards has talent, and I feel they are going to use it. Signing a 31 year old reciever does not end the term for Braylon IMO.
I believe that they are bringing in as many bodies they can to see who will stick. Patten is pretty old and this guy is no spring chicken either. I see some mentoring about to happen in the WR area.

Good move. I see this as us preparing for the loss of Braylon, as well as putting together a decent unit. However, I don't see us trading Braylon, at least not yet. I could see him being moved mid season similar to Roy Williams last year. I think a contender could trade the farm for him.

That's what I'm afraid of. I guess it could mean the end of Cribbs as a receiver and more of a special team/defensive player.
At least our receiving core is looking more respectable.

If BE does get traded I think it will be for draft picks. Teams don't seem to value picks this time of year like they did 2-3 wks ago. Somebody might be willing to give up a 1st and 3rd or even a 1st and 2nd if we wait and somebody gets desperate in training camp because of an injury or something.

How in the world would securing Mike Furrey free us up to move Edwards?!    Nothing wrong with acquiring Furrey, but to say that makes BE pseudo-expendible is ridiculous.

I think it's just a numbers thing. Mangini is bringing in LOTS of WRs. It should bring out the best in all of them. Only so many will make the team. I like it. I don't see us getting rid of BE now either. It could happen I suppose but I see him playing well for us this year with some quality play from our #2, and #3.

Furrey will be a help to the team.
I think this eliminates Cribbs as a real WR, and will likely be a special teamer and possible defensive player. Maybe appear in a Brad Smith kind of role.

I sent a text to my friend about the Furrey signing.
Said he already knew it was coming because his friend knows Furrey. All I wanted to know was why the hell he didn't tell me.

The ManGenie needs one in place before BE is traded I suspect. His bad years receiving are better than the dropsy we saw last year out of our wideout drivekiller. Let him in; make some plays!

Guys who can get open and catch seem to end up with #1 numbers if the QB throws it their way often enough.

I don't think this effects Braylon at all. I do, however, think it means the end for Steptoe and/or Hubbard. One might land on the practice squad but I have to think the other is history.

While I may like the idea behind many of these under the radar signings we are now officially crowded at WR. When I scan that roster I view the odd outs as Steptoe & Hubbard. I won't miss either one.

My best guess on how this ends up:
SE: Braylon / Massaquoi
FL: Patten / Robiskie
Slot: Furrey / Cribbs
Furrey and Patten are really both slot guys, so we really would be best served if Robiskie could win that FL starting spot. But, until he shows something, I'll guess the above.
Also, while Cribbs shows up here...my guess it's more in a Reggie Bush type role than an actual slot WR when he plays.

How you can determine that the signing of any given receiver is an indication of the front offices intent towards who's going to be the QB defies logic and leans towards personal desire.
When it comes to body-types of offensive or defensive linemen being geared towards one style of play or another, that's easily done. This is one single receiver who's been released and hardly looked at because concussions made him a risk.
Maybe Quinn is the guy who's on their leaderboard and maybe he isn't, but to suggest this signing means Quinn is the guy is a reach.
As for Furrey, this is a low-risk, high-reward signing. Maybe he can find the magic he had a few years ago and maybe he can't, but on this team with our situation at WR, he's a worth-while gamble. In short, we're attempting to catch lightning in a bottle.
The only thing the signing of Furrey really indicates is that the team isn't very hopeful regarding the situation with Stallworth.

Furry, seems to catch everything thrown his way and for us Browns fans, thats a welcome addition. Not afraid to go over the middle and plays 100% on every down.....that also is a nice addition to what we've seen over the last few years.
As for BE....I dont give a rats behind if he stays or if he goes, This team isnt about BE, he hasnt earned that, I'd love for BE to stay and be productive on & off the field, but if all he's gonna be is a distraction in the locker room and continue to drop passes than I'd rather trade'em to the best offer, and move on.
I do wanna point out this new Regime is signing FOOTBALL PLAYERS, players that dont expect alot of headlines, but are smart and just wanna play football on Sundays and so far I like it, is it gonna all add up & come together on Sunday, well see, but it's a good start.

Furrey is Brian Brennan w/ more speed. The fact that he has good hands alone is worth the signing.

Exactly, he needs a big year if he really wants to cash in huge. He can have an average year and still get a nice sized contract....but not as big if he had a Pro Bowl type year obviously.
Of course, if his stats aren't impressive with us in 2009 and the team struggles (due to injuries or QB play) he can blame someone other than himself.....but I think other teams see right through that. Even in a bad offense, #1 WR's should put of respectable numbers by making the most of even bad situations. A #1 WR should be able to elevate the team on some level....if he's invisible, than he's not a #1.
I want to keep him and potentially resign him. I don't understand why so many Browns fans get on him. While he's said some odd things in the past, he's no Chad Johnson with his mouth. While he drops passes, he's still not as bad overall than T.O. (and even if he's the same, T.O. is a damn fine WR). And who cares if he's from Michigan! I went to Toledo...so I can't stand OSU and the team up north.

didn't furrey have his best year when martz was still the OC in detroit? we probably wouldn't expect that legel of production, simply that we're trying to find a serviceable #3, or #2 if the regime feels robo isn't ready.

I think the biggest overlooked thing is our WRs at the end of last season was atrocious and its quietly being worked on... the names are promising esp at this time of year
