The Bengals released OLT Levi Jones on Wednesday.

Jones, 29, started 89 games in seven seasons for Cincinnati, but injury concerns marked his last several seasons with the Bengals. Jones started the first 10 games of the last season before suffering a leg injury.

Rookie Andre Smith will likely replace Jones in the Bengals' starting lineup.

my question: is a better option at RT or even RG than the players we have now, not counting tucker?

The injury's must be severe enough they feel like he cant even be used as a backup at any tackle position.

Run from him!!!!!!

As long as he's not looking for big time LT money i'd bring him in. I think he'd make a decent RT.

well they drafted his replacement #6 overall and he was due $3 million, being signed through 2012. i don't think they would've allowed for the backup to make $3 million.

i don't remember what type of injury he had though. he'd probably get a look by the bills.

I still don't understand how the bengals passed up Eugene Monroe for Andre Smith if Smith is going to play LT. Smith seems more like a run-blocking RT to me. Do you think they just assumed Monroe wouldn't slip to them and decided not to bother scouting him? Like I said, I like Smith in the RT spot, but he is going to be ABUSED by speed rushers on the left side.

They still had to eat the guranteed money. They had to feel he wasn't worth it no? They had ZERO offers (evidently) to trade him?

Its comes down to his health guys....nothing else.

3 mil?? You kidding me? You let a guy who "can" start at either tackle spot and has at a high level (no slouch or bum here) and at the least backup both spots and you let him go for 3 mil?

Not buying it!!!!!

I think it's pretty shortsighted if they are releasing a guy because they just expect a rookie to come in and start. What happens if Smith can't pick up the offense like they want, or if he struggles, like a lot of rookies do?

Now, if they released Jones because of his injury status or something else, I get it. But I don't think you release a guy just because you expect the rookie to take over for him.

I think that would be like us just releasing Fraley right now because we drafted Mack. Who says that Mack will be able to plug right in?

If I was the Bengals, I'd have made sure that Smith is going to be comfortable in the system and work well in the system before I release my "insurance policy" if Smith is the true reason they let Jones go.

One of the articles i just read when i was trying to check up on his injury said the Bengals needed the money for signing their picks and to have some money set aside to sign someone in case of injury.

i remember reading on PFT that the bengals have been trying to trade him for some time. the article dated back a few weeks and essentially said if they couldn't trade him, that they'd release him. well, they released him.

remember, this is the same team that released willie anderson (i think a year after the organization made him the highest paid RT) after he refused to take a paycut. now he's a pretty good RT for the ravens.

Why couldn't they trade him? Health prolly.

Money might have been a factor....not the REAL reason.

because teams know that no one will trade for levi jones? because teams rarely trade for players AFTER the draft, considering they know if someone is on the block, the guy'll be released?

someone's going to bring him in. i only asked whether he could make a decent RT or RG. lay off on the "there has to be more reasons" stuff. he's working for someone this season and more likely, will have a shot to start.

i'm not getting into a pissing contest with you. i have no problem with your reply but at the time, 33% of all the replies in this thread were yours and they all said the same thing: "another reason" for the release. we get that you think health is an issue. that's just thread saturation for no reason.

as thebigbaddawg pointed out, the bengals are a joke and make decisions based on money and and i pointed out there was clearly no market for a trade, not that the bengals didn't try because everyone KNEW he was getting released. dawg66 also had a link that said they needed to release him to free up cash to sign their new players.

at this point, i'd like to hear from others as to whether he can be a good RT assuming he's healthy.

The Bills will pay him more than anyone else offers him because they have no LT.

I have read a lot of articles referencing a "leg injury," but can anyone provide any details on this?

Why not bring him in for a look? He will prolly end up in Arizona or somewhere else anyway.
