Ohio Christian school tells student to skip prom

FINDLAY, Ohio – A student at a fundamentalist Baptist school that forbids dancing, rock music, hand-holding and kissing will be suspended if he takes his girlfriend to her public high school prom, his principal said.

Despite the warning, 17-year-old Tyler Frost, who has never been to a dance before, said he plans to attend Findlay High School's prom Saturday.

Frost, a senior at Heritage Christian School in northwest Ohio, agreed to the school's rules when he signed a statement of cooperation at the beginning of the year, principal Tim England said.

The teen, who is scheduled to receive his diploma May 24, would be suspended from classes and receive an "incomplete" on remaining assignments, England said. Frost also would not be permitted to attend graduation but would get a diploma once he completes final exams. If Frost is involved with alcohol or sex at the prom, he will be expelled, England said.

Frost's stepfather Stephan Johnson said the school's rules should not apply outside the classroom.

"He deserves to wear that cap and gown," Johnson said.

Frost said he thought he had handled the situation properly. Findlay requires students from other schools attending the prom to get a signature from their principal, which Frost did.

"I expected a short lecture about making the right decisions and not doing something stupid," Frost said. "I thought I would get his signature and that would be the end."

England acknowledged signing the form but warned Frost there would be consequences if he attended the dance. England then took the issue to a school committee made up of church members, who decided to threaten Frost with suspension.

"In life, we constantly make decisions whether we are going to please self or please God. (Frost) chose one path, and the school committee chose the other," England said.

The handbook for the 84-student Christian school says rock music "is part of the counterculture which seeks to implant seeds of rebellion in young people's hearts and minds."

England said Frost's family should not be surprised by the school's position.

"For the parents to claim any injustice regarding this issue is at best forgetful and at worst disingenuous," he said. "It is our hope that the student and his parents will abide by the policies they have already agreed to."

The principal at Findlay High School, whose graduates include Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, said he respects, but does not agree with, Heritage Christian School's view of prom.

"I don't see (dancing and rock music) as immoral acts," Craig Kupferberg said.

Apparently God shuns all those who listen to rock and go to prom

Do they expel kids for having a radio in their cars? Are they even allowed to drive? What if he agrees to wear earplugs and keep one foot on the ground at all times? There must be some common ground they can arrive at so these people can exercise some common sense.

What does his family expect? they sent him to this school and should have known that these were the rules.

I feel sorry for the kid if he was forced to go to this kind of school. if he wanted to go to this school then he has no complaint.

This is simply disgusting. Imagine how ill-equipped the kids who attend this school are going to end up.

I don't think it's religion per se that is a detriment. It's the zealots out there that are the detriment. I'm no fan of religion, but I know a lot of people who are very good people who are very religious. But, they don't follow this kind of "no dancing, no music" crap. They treat people like they want to be treated, are good to their families, and lead good lives.

I think a great majority of people who follow a religion are like that. It's just that the nutcases get the press.

I will be the first to say that religion has and can do a lot of good for people. I just think the negatives outweigh the positives.

And it's not just zealots...look at a great deal of our life that has been irrationally warped by religion -- abstinence only initiatives, the 'debate' on evolution, views on homosexuality, assisted suicide, Terry Schiavo, etc. It's not always the crackpots pushing for that kind of stuff.

Knew what he was getting into with the signature at the beginning of the year . Tough break for the kid but it should come as no surprise to him or his parents. My daughter went to a christian school until 7th grade and all was well but the little things started to add up and we made a choice to send her to a public school . Overall it was a good experience for her so no complaints from me but there is an understanding that they have thier own set of rules of conduct and there is little leeway.

I go to a public school (the only school in my town) that is basically a Catholic school as like 99.9% of people in my town are Catholic. We used to have nuns teach here, we have religion classes, we go to church etc,. But my school is at least reasonable. Obviously, you can't go around making out in the hall ways, but there is dancing and even a little more than that at dances. We have a well known teenage alcohol problem. The school does everything it can to prevent stuff like this, even having a breathalyzer at prom and homecoming, but you will not be punished for stuff outside of school.

With that said, this kid knew what he was getting into when he signed that contract. Yes, it is ridiculous, but he agreed to it, and he has no room for complaint.

So, say someone in his family gets married and plans to have the traditional DJ and dancing at the wedding. Is he forbidden to attend the reception?

I went to Heritage Christian (so many HCS's out there lol) in Cleveland from 3rd through 9th grade. On the whole it wasn't a bad experience even though I was suspended twice and got worse than that; public high school to finish out i didn't even get a note to take home lol

its definitely a different experience and yes ive been a part of churchs growing up where Root Beer was bad because it had the word Beer in it (wish i was joking!)

I have no problem w/ a higher power and through it all I still maintain a belief in the guy upstairs i just have problems with alot of the organizations out there for going very reactionary and extreme

Right ... because if we remove religion from the equation and ran everything like a public school, we wouldn't have rediculous decisions like suspending a kid for doing no more than getting punched by another kid or hugging a girl on the playground. Oh wait ...

Phil, I've noticed you are negative about everything - EVERYTHING.

Religion, politics, the U.S, ........anything the U.S. does, anything that has to do with not supporting homosexuality, ....the list goes on and on.

That's fine I guess. But why so bitter about everything?

The only thing I would say I'm truly 'bitter' about is that we have the greatest freedoms on the face of the planet and we more often than not squander them.

Beyond that, I think religion is stupid, I think our government is corrupt and I think our population continually gets lazier and dumber. I don't know if that's being negative or merely making an observation.

I'm not trying to offend anyone when I say that I think religion is stupid, but that's how I feel. We've become a nation that values emotions over the truth...look at that poor girl who's getting turned and burned because she said she doesn't like gay marriage...I think it's an ignorant opinion, but what should she do? Lie? Not talk?

Somewhere along the line, our answer to intolerance became to censor the intolerant. It's what many call 'being P.C.'.

Well Phil, I do agree.

We sit back as slice ny slice they are taken away.

If you steal a whole salami from the butcher, he will miss that. If you take it 2-3 slices at a time, he never notices it's gone until it is to late.

I take offense to that......there have been many, many times in the last, say, 6 months for example, where you have said this same thing.

Phil, I won't argue with you, nor will I argue that some use religion in a manner that religion was not intended, but seriously, when you continually berate religion, it flat out bothers me. Have to say it. If you don't like it, fine. Don't attempt to belittle me because of your feelings. You don't hear me telling you, or anyone else on here, that they are going to hell for not believing, do you? I would not do that, yet it seems you feel you can attempt to feel better about yourself by belittling religion as a whole (be it muslim, christian, etc - although I will say I've never heard you attack muslims like you christians, but that's beside the point.)

When you generalize about religion, you look bad. And honestly, in my opinion, it appears like you are trying to feel better about yourself by knocking down something you don't have and saying "see, you don't need it".

Religion CAN be a fantastic thing. Trust me. I've been on both sides, and a "believing" arch is a better arch - in more ways than you can imagine.

Sorry man, just had to stick up for myself. I'm tired of you calling religion stupid and insinuating that religious people are stupid. (and yes, that is what your insinuation is, whether you see it or not)

I don't think religious people are stupid...I think they're taking part in a form of temporary insanity.

I mean...sitting in a pulpit while a man reads from a book that discusses a talking snake and a man parting a body of water, and another man loading two of every animal onto a boat...that's not stupid?

Taking part in something stupid doesn't make you stupid. It just means you're taking part in something stupid. Smart, rational people do stupid things all the time. Take Browns fans -- there are plenty of very bright people all over this board who, on Sundays, bark like rabid dogs. It's kind of insane...and it's really stupid. But we do it.

I'm sorry what I have to say offends you, but I'm not going to not say it. Political correctness is short-sighted, and I'm surprised to see you asking for it (and, yes, in a sense, you are...)

And as for the insinuation that I bash Christians more than Muslims...I think all religions are pretty nutty. I don't think Christianity is any different than Scientology, I find Islam is as nutty as Mormonism. I am an equal opportunity eye-roller.

Calling my religion stupid is nothing short of calling me stupid, considering how big of a part it has in my life. It is very offensive to me, and I'm sure everyone else on this board who is of faith. Religion makes me a better person, and I hardly think that is stupid. You may think that some of the things in the bible are "stupid" but I believe in the majority of them 100%. They may seem impossible to you, but I'm not here to argue my faith. I am telling you that just because you don't believe in something, it's not necessarily stupid.

It's all a point of view. You think not believing is just as stupid as he thinks religion is stupid...

I personally think anyone who thinks they know what the hell is going on in and after this world is stupid. No one knows. They only think or believe they know. I, however, find absolutely no fault in anyone who does. Each person has their thing that gets them through life. Just because one person thinks its stupid doesn't mean it's stupid.

Do you honestly think that is what religion is? You have to be kidding. That's one of the most ignorant statements I have read. Seriously. If that is your view of religion.......you have no understanding of what true religion is, or better yet, of what a religious person is. If that is your thoughts on religion I can see why you feel like you do. Sunday morning is nothing. Living (I'm going to use Christian because that is what I am) as a Christian is a daily thing.....not a Sunday morning thing. I'll just stop now.....other than to say you are either ignorant of religion, or used that example to portray religion in a bad light yet again.

Back off - religion isn't stupid. Stupid religious people are - religion is not.

I'm not asking for it - political correctness, or for you to respect me. Re read my post. You berate religion, and I'm sticking up for what I believe. Sorry dude, that's not asking for you to be p.c., that is simply telling you that I do not agree with you.

That is your right. Good for you. I'm not trying to preach, nor am I trying to convert you. But seriously, when you call me (since I have "religion" as you want to call it) nutty, stupid, etc etc, and all the insinuations, etc.....dude, I'm sticking up for what I believe in.

What do you think I'd do if you called my wife a whore? Or if you called my daughter stupid? I'd stick up for them.....Imagine if you called all white people ignorant...I'd stick up for them...or if you called all blacks gangbangers....I'd stick up for them.

You calling me out for being religious is no different. Smack me all you want, just don't expect me to ignore it is all I'm saying.

I'm glad you are confident in your life.....although, really, when a person attacks something over and over and over, it generally shows a lack of understanding and a desire to pull others away in order to feel better about yourself. Bud, it sure seems like that is what you're doing.....and honestly, take what I just said and think about it in terms other than religion.

It's not my disbelief that makes it stupid.

I'm sorry, but if you believe that a talking snake coaxed someone into eating an apple or that a man loaded two of every animal onto a boat in order to save them from a global flood...that's stupid, and it's not because I don't believe in it.

God is real.

I figure it this way. If Phil is right....we just die and that's that, then that is how it is and i have lost nothing in believing.

If Phil is wrong, then not believing will cost me much, so just from a potential loss standpoint, it makes sense to believe.

If there was a god and they were THAT petty then I say forget them.

I'm agnostic. I know I don't have an answer either way. I can not prove God exists, nor can I prove he/she/it doesn't. If what you say Peen is true then I'll burn in hell, but I'll be rightous as I live a good life, treat others with respect, and help people when I can.

Just to clarify...I am not claiming to have any knowledge or idea of what happens to us once we die. I think atheism is as shortsighted as religion.
