From his Monday Morning Quarterback

32. Cleveland
Hey, thank me, all you Brownaholics. Two years ago in a column like this one, I wrote that Cleveland was the worst team in the league. The Browns went 10-6. This year I'm saying they're the worst team again -- and I can guarantee you they're not going 10-6, unless Brady Quinn morphs into Tom Brady. Too many holes, too tough a division; write them down for 0-4 against the Steelers and Ravens."

So what? At least it'll be a new and different looking train wreck this year.

I'm going to wait and see what comes out of training camp before I start predicting gloom and doom.

Last place? Not a big surprise to me. I'm thankful we didn't play Detroit as our last game last year, even though we were higher in the "power rankings", because I think they would have beat us.

At least this leaves us with nowhere to go but up!

Actually King has us going last in the NFL.. not JUST the division. Glad to hear it actually, as he will be wrong yet again.

Ah yes the Same Peter King who predicted the Rams and Jacksonville to make the playoffs last year., the Falcons to finish last in their divisions, and the Cards, to finish 3rd in their division. You mean THAT Peter King

Well, that I don't agree with, but, someone's got to finish last and I bet their fanbase is not expecting it either. Thinking of all the bad teams from last year, there is an argument for each one as to why they'd be better than the Browns this year.

And there are also arguments that can be made as to why we will not only finish in front of those bad teams but the ones that were good last year as well. That's why we watch, that's why boobs like Peter King can make predictions.

The only thing it really means is that we are getting closer to the season starting.

Yup, that's the same guy,, The very same guy..

And, if you go to the PFT article, some of the posters on there replied that King doesn't even have his facts straight...

I'm not saying that the Browns are going to win it all, but I don't think the botton of the heap is where we will be either..

I know I just stand by the old saying of "that's why they play the games." We have no idea how the season is going to turn out. Predictions are all well and good, and maybe we'll be the 2nd team to go 0-16. But, right now, we could be the next team to go 16-0. Likely? No, not at all. But possible? Sure, why not?

We won't know until we start playing games.

It's quite simple...

We've addressed just about all our problems in some fashion.

Couldn't run the ball last year? Replaced a finesse center with a strong, physical mauler. Is he only a rookie? Yes, but it's still an upgrade. Also signed a TE known for blocking.

Couldn't throw because Edwards was doubled and everyone else was worthless? Enter Robiskie, Massaquoi, Furrey, Patten, etc...we will have the best 6 receivers on the roster.

Hole at safety? Enter Elam.

Poor DL depth? We addressed that.

Poor ILB next to Jackson? Enter Barton + draft picks that may pan out.

Poor pass rush? Enter Rob Ryan, Alex Hall in his second year, and David Veikune (who at the absolute worst will be a situational rusher this year).

Poor CB depth? We basically added a whole new secondary this year...one of these guys should fill in well in the nickel and dime packages...packages that absolutely KILLED us last year because we had no depth beyond the #2 spot at CB.

We took care of everything...and although we're not "stacked everywhere," we have INSURANCE everywhere. We have guys who can fill in. Will we be a dominant team? Most likely not. Will we be a competitive team? Absolutely. This roster has the makeup of a competitive team against this sort of schedule. Hell, last year's team was competitive before Quinn's finger fell off and Crennel became a lame duck.

That gives me reason to hope. My mind will change if Edwards is moved though (unless we pick up a monster passrusher in return). Edwards means everything to opening up the passing game for everyone else...and this year we'll have the ability to take advantage of that.

In the end, who finishes last will come down to who can get a couple wins early and build some confidence and it will also come down to injuries because teams near the bottom aren't typically very deep... that's why they are at the bottom.. There are a handful of teams that if they lost just 1 person, could immediately be in contention for the worst team...

AKA us last year.

Lose Robaire Smith? Goodbye DL depth.

Lose Daven Holly? Now we have no nickelback (something I essentially think of as a starting role).

Lose Donte Stallworth? Hello Syndric Steptoe.

This roster has more safeguards against that happening...even though the starting rosters are basically comparable. 1-22 is marginally improved, but 23-53 is MUCH better.

And add in losing DA for 3 weeks of practice, losing Braylon leading into the season for a while.. we had a lot of injuries...

Ok for starters the Browns replaced the worst coach in football with a decent coach. His incompetence was astonishing. Replacing Romeo alone is good for 6 wins. Its replacing the Coach B of the NFL lol

I am starting to like what i see in the moves this group has made. There is a theme amongst the players they are bringing in. Toughness, work ethic and intelligence.

Tough to say how many wins but 10 of our games will be within an 8 point spread. If this team isn't in the .500 range all year I'll be surprised. †!--color-->

The Cleveland Browns organization had better do everything they can so that we don't finish last. - Every year, more and more season tickets become available. Right now, given the amount of open club-level seats, and upper deck area seats that are available for purchase, it seems as if the fairweather, trendy fans have already taken their money elsewhere. As the losing seasons stockpile, the die-hards are starting to take their money and interest away as well.

Pretty soon, fans will have as much interest in the Browns as they did for the Cleveland Indians of the 1970's. - No joke

Pre-season predictions are stupid. All they are for the most part are copy/pastes of last year's standings +/- 5 or so spots, with rare exceptions. What King SHOULD realize is that almost every year, last place teams make the playoffs and win divisions.

I don't care what he or anyone else thinks. We may not be the sexiest team on paper and we're not going to be a good choice in Madden, but the intangibles we've acquired should go a long way into making us much more competitive and driven. That alone should be good to move us out of last place (not to mention our schedule), but it's so much easier to just gloss over than and rip on the NFL's whipping boys.

I say BRING IT.

Does this mean you are going to start pessimistic threads about ... Perry and Boog Powell?

I fail to see what is so bad about our team that automatically makes us so horrible.

-Strong OL
-Depth at DL
-Depth at CB
-Upgraded the safety position
-Depth at RB
-Depth at QB (biggest question mark)
-Still thin at LB but depth was added.
-Depth added at receiver.

We added depth across the board...how is this bad? We have the best coaching staff since Marty. How does this make us worse than the Lions...how does this make RememberMuni so pessimistic?

I'm NOT calling for a Superbowl here...but I'm not calling for a complete trainwreck either. This team has the makeup of a competitive team...not a great team but not a trainwreck either.

They didn't achieve success here? They won 12 games in '94 and won a playoff game. On top of that, Sports Illustrated picked us to face San Fran in the '95 Superbowl. - We were either 4-2 or 5-2 in 1995 when Modell announced he was moving the team.

They had a great deal of success here. Bellichik has commented several times as to how proud he was of what he built here before Modell ruined it.

reading through this thread, it's funny how defensive everyone gets on what PK wrote. say what you want but the guy is a good reporter and he is one of the best national reporters.

what do you expect him to say? aside from the raiders, from a national perspective, why wouldn't we be put at the bottom? to address some short-term memory, this guy touted us like crazy last offseason. do you guys not remember that large browns article he worked on for months for SI? he liked us a lot. did you guys say this guy had no idea what he was saying then?

point being, from a national spotlight, we look pretty bad but that is better than having all the attention for "getting there" when we weren't there. we saw what happens in that scenario, look at the 2008 season.

thanks king, i'm glad you put us at 32. now our players can get to work and have a 10+ win season, just like in 07 when you put us at 32.

The Lions went 0-16 and drafted one of the most mediocre #1 overall QB's I've ever seen. They haven't done much to help their team...we've done pretty much everything and we somehow have to be listed below the Lions.
