I got into an argument with my buddy yesterday. He keeps saying that WWE is a sport...i told him it's entertainment...
He said while most of it is scripted...some of it is real..and that makes it a sport...

I disagree...what do you guys think?

Is WWE a sport?

Well, I ended up voting "I don't know," but I can change it easily to yes.

Wrestlers IMO would be considered athletes, which would pretty much call it a sport. While most of it is fake, they still are athletes, which makes it kind of unique.

I imagine it does take athletic ability to be able to do the moves but to me a sport is when people play a game in which one is the winner and one the loser by the outcome of their actions in the game not decided before hand like WWE.

If cheerleading is considered a sport then wrestling has to be as well.

The athleticism it takes to do what they do and the punishment they take...it's a sport. It may be pre-planned but it's a sport for sure.

It's not a sport.

Neither is NASCAR, neither is cheerleading.

Exactly...sport to me is something where there is a physical action involved and the outcome is not pre-planned.

I agree that wrestling is a sport...but IMO the goal of WWE is to entertain ppl by making up story lines....and that makes it strictly entertainment and not sport.

By definition a sport is: an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

I don't see how you can say it isn't based on that.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying.

Even though I don't care for it at all, it falls into the sport category. It's fake, it's scripted, but it's wrestling. Like basketball, even though the Refs fixed the NBA games, it's still a sport. If that makes any sense.

How often do WWE guys get injured? I'm asking because I'm guessing it's fairly uncommon since it's all fake wrestling anyway.

Oh they do get hurt, because it is physically demanding.

But no... wrestling is not a sport. Cheerleading (the competitive kind) is more of a sport than rasslin', which I can't stand to watch. It's completely ridiculous.

Wrestling is a sport.no doubt....but what these guys do is SCRIPTED. It's NOT competitive, because they already know who is going to win. It's like saying if they make a movie script for a sport...why isn't that a sport? if they played football in a movie it's still a MOVIE...it's not a real game...that is what i feel like this is...it's just a big ass show they put up.

The definition says it is often competitive, as in not necessarily competitive.

I agree that you were right when you disagreed.

Not gonna go round and round with anyone on the "NASCAR is/isn't a sport" part of the conversation because it's one that people have their minds set on, even though this opinion is not in line with definition.....which just blows me away when people argue that something is "not" what it is even if it obviously is, and proven by facts to be so.

WWE is obviously not a sport, because there is no competition....it is a pre-planned event, structured entirely for entertainment purposes only.

While the match is already predetermined, it definitely takes a lot of athleticism to do it.

It is what they call themselves, Sports Entertainment. Some people think it's all fake...no, it's not fake, it's fixed. If you really think there is no pain involved in it...then you are naive.

But no, it's not just a sport. It's not just entertainment either. It's a good mix, which is why a lot of people love to watch it.

I suggest that people go see The Wrestler. It will open your eyes to Professional Wrestling.

you had a good run Hank.

They get hurt all the time. They suffer major bumps and bruises in a typical match. And they do it all year round. It's why there's so much substance abuse in wrestling, takes a gigantic toll on the body.

They don't even make that much money either unless you're a main eventer.

First thing (not directed at you Michelle) This stuff isn't wrestling. It bears no resemblance to the sport that it is named for.

Michelle, injuries are very, very common. It most resembles what stunt men do in Hollywood. It's nothing like the fake stuff of years ago. Most of what use to be done was people throwing pulled punches and body slams on a very forgiving ring floor. Today it is much more aerobatic. They do a lot of things where if they don't land properly they can do serious damage. A lot of times they actually do things on the concrete floor.

I would say that you and Jules are wrong about it being a soap opera for men. The soap opera part is right but I'm not sure that the majority of the followers are men. Most are teen agers and people with so much inbreeding that their DNA no longer resembles the rest of the population.

Maybe the analogy was a bit extreme, but yes..... I mean come on, Donovan was all over the news. If he had money on games, he was doing his best to fix them.

Wrestling is a sport. Although I think the WWE is gay, I have to call it a sport.

Pro Rasslin' requires a great deal of athletic ability ... but it is not a sport. As someone else said ..... It's a soap opera with men in tights.

I wrestled for 7 years and was trained by Al Snow's Bodyslammers. I rubbed elbows with many of the old time "names" and I can tell you with 1000% certainty that pro wrestling is NOT a "sport."

You DO have to be an athlete to do it though. Ten weeks of pro wrestling school were harder than ANY college or high football two-a-day sessions that I went through. The only physical activity that I've participated in that was more difficult is P90X.

The blood is REAL. The injuries are VERY real but the matches are NOT real. It's predetermined so it's NOT real...kinda like the Steelers Super Bowl victories.

You doubt me? I've seen plenty of those idiots blade. There are NO "blood packets" or ketchup involved. When they bleed, they bleed. I've already told you the matches are predetermined. Why would I lie about the blood?

These guys are stunt men plain and simple. It's not a sport. Are they athletic? Yes but so are most stunt men. They do it simply for entertainment value.

Nobody that I worked with was a "stunt man", nor was I. We were trained how to work a match, work the mic and do the various moves in the ring. You screwed up and you got hurt. At 315-330 lbs being able to do backflips from 15 feet up in the air off of ladders, turnbuckles, etc., I'd say I was a bit "athletic."

There's no disputing that the business is choreographed and predetermined but to "poo poo" the athleticism involved by most of the workers is flat out stupid. I guarantee you that 99.999% of the males who are posting on this thread would get chewed up and spit out if they tried it.

I'm sure I would, I'm 5'9 185 and they would destroy me. But if all of the contact was real I would be carried out of the ring in a body bag instead of a stretcher.

Sorry didn't mean to come off as dissing it. As I see you're not advocating it as an actual sport in your previous post so I really have nothing to argue about.

I don't think anyone "poo pooed" the athleticism, in fact the post you replied to when making the above comment referred to wrestlers as athletes. They have to be agile and in shape to be able to dance with one another....and that's all they are basically doing-dancing.

As for the blood, yes I do realize it is real in most cases. What I was referring to was the very manner in which the blood is brought forth. All part of the entertainment package, and not as a result of engaging in true competition as in a real sport.
