"And why would you believe RAC made all these calls"
Just for the record - I don't think RAC made all these calls.
I think him and Savage sat down and evaluated and Savage stressed...and rather strongly I might add that...this, this n this just has to go. And I seriously doubt RAC didn't put up an argument and possibly to different degrees on each individual.
But in the end agreed - never once do I think it was proposed its this way or the HIGHWAY by Savage to RAC.
Nor do I see Savage in anyway threatened to respond the way that you suggest as a motor response of defending oneself's position and to shield themselves from failure. He has never shielded himself yet and always stated that "WE" have failed or succeeded. Not RAC not the O. The changes were changes in review. The offense was not working on the right direction as the Defense. A big part of that was due to the lack of attention given to it by RAC. This we can get out of it when there were first major criticisms of Mo and he said about be more attentive to the plays. But from what we got on the inside stuff. RAC didn't have a clue on the O...he knew to a particle of dust what was going on with his D...but didn't really know what was going on with the O. And it showed. There wasn't the same organization and attention.
Why do you think there was all this LEADERSHIP stressed in regards to deciding who was coming in to run the Offense. It needed leadership from top to bottom to re-organize the O.
Also by Davidson's own account he felt he was a lame duck in his interview...and it almost seemed like by sensing that he thought he might as well get into an attack mode rather than an interview mode. Something bugged me about Davidson from this whole Mo Carthon thing. REALLY BUGGED me...the OL mutinied from Captain Bly (Mo) but noway that gets done without Officer Christians support (Davidson). I don't like mutineers...you back Captain Bly up to the hilt - take it up with the Admirals later. I think we are better off without Davidson until he was the HC he could have been a Cancer maybe a bright up n comer??? Anyways I don't think RAC liked that part of the interview and if there was a air that Davidson wasn't going to be the OC I think it permeated from RAC after all Mo was his guy.
So RAC had some input maybe a lot more than you all give him credit for.
I definately think Savage did take the lead in the process without a doubt...but they did with discussion and agreement after all was said and done...Even if they had to raise their voices. And compromises were made. Atkins remaining, Scherer remaining.
JMHO of most of this.
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

Ok my friend I'll play .. Explain to me the lack of talent in both ( in total ) the 2006 & 2006 draft ! .. Forget the FA. for a while , although last years was pretty good ! What do you think Uncle Phil has brought to the table out of say 14 / 15 draft picks ???

I refuse to blame Opie for this team still lacking talent, as that can't be fixed in two short years, especially when the free agent pool was so shallow. However, choosing this set of coaches was a mistake, and now they are paying the price for that mistake.
I find it quite amusing U defend Opie for the lack of talent (and rightfully so) but then blast RAC for not turningthis lack of talent into winners .. *LOL* ..

They can fix alot of the issues if they can land some starters via free agency and the draft.
RAC will be a MUCH BETTER coach next year when that happens ..
John Madden likes to say that the best coach is usualy decided at the hotel parking circle by witch bus loads the MORE TALENTED PLAYERS ... and John's RIGHT!!!!

Well, you can't judge a draft for 3 years with anything to really judge it on, but I'll go ahead. First, anything second day is usually developmental or a crapshoot (IIRC 50% don't make it the three years). Still, let's look at the picks....
Braylon Edwards.....say what you want, but the kid worked his butt off to come back from his injury and produced. Yes he had maturity problems and dropped some balls. That doesn't mean he isn't a great talent that can be a great player.
Brodney Pool.....played very well this year and even played some CB adequately with all the injuries. I think this coming year will be his breakout year.
Charlie Frye.....great completion percentage, leadership, and courage. His development has been stunted by a terrilbe OL. The jury is still out, but at worst he will be a solid backup for us for years to come.
Kamerion Wimbley.....everyone was up in arms about this pick, but the kid produced and will only get better.
D'Qwell Jackson....played very well for a rookie and will only improve after suffering growing pains.
Travis Wilson.....unknown quantity at this point, but again too soon to evaluate this draft year anyway.
Not a bad first day for either year. Add to that 2nd day guys that look to be in the future here.....
Leon Williams....played well at the end of the year and looks like he will be vying for a starting spot next year.
Isaac Sowells....not much this year, but figures to be at least quality depth...not bad for a late 4th round pick.
Jerome Harrison....showed he was a rookie, but also showed some flashes. If he can learn how to block, he should be a nice 3rd down back for us.
Lawrence Vickers....Probably will be the starting FB this year or at the latest the following year.
Babatunda.....practice squad most of the year due to size....purely a project but with weight gain will be at least quality depth....not bad for a late 6th round pick.
So, 5 out of the 6 first day choices are starters (with Wilson the heir apparent for the slot this year), some quality depth and one possible starter from the second day picks. Not bad at all.

As is the standard for judging a draft class, we have to wait until the 3rd year after any given draft to determine if it's a success or a failure.
So.........check back with me after this season and we'll grade the '05 draft class.

I've already pretty much addressed your questions, but they weren't "directly addressed to you". So since personal attention seems required,I'll recap. Quote:
...how does keeping RAC on as a fall-guy do anything other than buy 1 additional year for Savage in Cleveland?
As I've already stated,up untill this point,it has been presented as the two of them working jointly to fix this team. By giving the impression that RAC is "solely responsible" for the new hirings of these coaches,it would create the perception that if they fail, they were solely RAC's call and that Phil was not responsible for the failing in any way, shape or form.
Quote:
and why is that helpfull for Savage's career? could he not land another job? would he not look WORSE on the job market if he had more time and multiple HCs in Cleveland with the same poor results?
And faiing here wheather it be this year OR next year OR the year after that will help him get a better position elsewhere? In case you're unaware of it,a major "failure" on your resume,no matter where it is,is very counterproductive in furthering your career.
Quote:
i know if my 'natural human reaction' (LOL) were to save my own ass, i wouldn't be thinking about 2007, i'd be thinking about 2008 and beyond...
Exactly. That's why you would put yourself in a position of blaming the failing here on someone elses shoulders. So in the event things fail here, they take the fall rather than you.

Here's another point for the conspiracy theorists. What if Savage is keeping RAC this season, knowing there could be a solid crop of coaches available next season, headed by Cowher? (Who I think becomes the next coach in Carolina if Fox has a bad year) Now I don't think for one minute it's true. I'll be surprised if Cowher comes north again. My point is, there are so many possible theories out there that it's easy to NOT believe what someone says directly i.e. Savage.
And how is this any "less" of a "conspiracy theory" than what others labeled the first one? It's also a plausible theory. But no more or less a "conspiracy theory" than anyone elses.

Hehehe......That quote DOES look familiar
My opinion of why RAC should go:
1) He badly mishandled the Mo situation, sticking with a guy LONG after he'd proven he should have been fired. His faith in him as an OC was flawed and showed poor judgement, but that can somewhat be forgiven as a rookie HC mistake. However, everyone in the NFL knew it was time to let Mo go, but RAC couldn't do it. Opie had to step in and do it for him, and that's the kind of grevious error that a HC can't make.
2) Gameday coaching seemed to be seriously lacking. A rookie HC can make a few mistakes and get a mulligan. A 2nd year HC can't, especially not one that had worked for years under two HOF coaches in Bellyache and Tuna. RAC isn't 35. He should allready have known how to handle most of these situations in his rookie year, let alone his 2nd.
3) Didn't handle his players early enough when they were getting out of control.
4) Very poor selections when choosing his coaching staff. Granted, it's easy to judge after the fact, but then again, that's the right time to judge
5) Finally, I maintain that keeping RAC for another year while bringing in many new coaches under this situation just delay's an impending shakeup. We could have hired a new guy and allowed that coach, who would be here at least two seasons, the opportunity to bring in free agents and draft picks that fit his system. As it stands now, everyone knows RAC is on the hot seat. If he doesn't get off to a decent start (say 3-5 or 4-4) he will probably get the axe. Then we'll be starting over at mid-season, and will have potentially wasted $33 million in free agent money and the 3rd and 35th selections in the draft on guys that may not fit in a new system. We may also lose some coaches after only one season.
So.....there ya go.

Peen I don't have the time sequences nor the articles..but I do know the Browns had some brief interviews before the SB of 05...then after Phil came on, and right after the SB Rac was hired.. At that time Collins was president and he was making moves before Phil came aboard.

I think all of the conpiracy theorists are nuts and full of crap.
For one reason or another, these are just guys that didn't fit the future and were let go. I don't see it as any great loss for us with any of them. I also don't see their replacements as the big deal folks are making those out to be. I mean, unless you stumble across a guy like Whatshisname that coached the OLine in Denver that drastically changes the way all teams do things against you, this is like arguing over who the assistant manager at McDonald's is.
Browns is the Browns

That is correct , LERNER/COLLINS did state they wanted to wait on the GM..well they had no choice, the job couldn't be offered to Rac until 12:00 am. If I recall Rac said as soon as the the SB was over he got a call on his cell.. My point is Rac wasn't initially [Phils handpicked man..he agreed to it-at that poitn how he not have? It's why I keep saying Rac can be let go but not Phil won't because of him..Nor is Phil setting up Rac as the fall guy..thats not what I see here.

LOL...not ten posts into this thread Savage is called a "snake" and he's out to set RAC up to fail...what a joke...
Some of you "theorists" need to realize Savage has too much vested in this situation to set RAC up to fail...where you people come up with this junk is beyond me...a simple article turns into this?...when did Browns fans become a bunch of "Jack Bauer’s" saving Berea from the terrorists aka Front Office personnel?...the reading into situations and liberties taken by many of you people is incredible... ...what's even more ridiculous is many of you have no clue...
I love talking about the draft, but let me thank a couple of you for reminding me of the reasons why I don’t frequent this site much anymore...
Savage a "snake"...that's funny…
I’m getting the picture that many of you need to go out and get some hobbies…
The worse part about this, is some of these people will actually buy into what you people say...SMH.

Clueless.. What he said coincides with the articles we saw that came following that one....do I need to go back and retrieve those also?
Well........let me just say that I know for a fact that what Knott said about Robo is a load of crap. It ain't close to the truth. You can believe me or not, but I ain't backing off that one.
Oh...and the reports on Mo were highly exaggerated.
One more thing. We fired Lott because he yelled at opponents? I think it was way deeper than that. How do we let Leon's actions go, but fire a coach for yelling at opponents? How in the heck is that worse than calling out teammates, coaches, and the organization itself? Think about this........wasn't I the first one---on here or in the media--who told you all that Lott was on the list of those who would be fired? I knew the real reason why, and it isn't the reason Knott gave. Let me ask you this.......do you think I was just lucky w/all those predictions? Bro, it is way deeper than what you guys are saying.

You are incredible. You are one of the main people I refer to when I talk about people who blast my statements and then ignore them when they come true. Then, you start all over again. You are a phony and are one of the main reasons I quit posting last time.
I actually don't mind at all when people disagree w/me. That makes for good debate. Hell, one of my favorite, if not the favorite, posters on here is Diam...and we argue all the time. But, he doesn't resort to cheap shots. And he doesn't ignore the facts when they come in. There are many others who I fight with on here. DnD, Pit, Clem, ddubia, Clem, and even eotab [the liar thing pissed me off though], but I still respect their opinions. They own up if they are wrong. I do the same.
You keeping making fun of me because I say that I have heard things. You act like I am making that up. Just how the hell do you explain how I knew what coaches were gone BEFORE anyone...and I mean...anyone reported it or speculated on it? How did I know Collins was Damien long before everyone hated him? How did I know Edwards was Leon? Keep belittling me, but I think people who have read the board for years know the real truth.
One more thing. tab , I am still upset w/you, but your last two posts are pretty accurate, at least from what I hear.

"truth" can be altered by the perspective of the viewer. If you are so close to the situation, then maybe you vision is obscured by the "in"sight of others.
The Browns have blown up the offensive side of the coaching staff becuse they were not able to get the team to perform. 31st in the league in offense was a step back. Is it their fault.. probably not all of it. Did the Browns lose some good coaches, probably so. Did they walk on water, probably not. Do I like all the new hires, not at all. But I am willing to give it a shot. I have to.
My inclination is that the coaching side of this team is only phase 1 of the reconstuction. I would not be surprized to see major changes in offensive personnel this offseason.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!…. That did not age well.

Then why don't U post something that says otherwise..and I am not one to call U a liar..U know that about me.. I posted only what I saw.. If it's not close to the truth then what Gross-me-out and co. were saying isn't the truth either.. When I first printed the comments(which if noticed I never said I agreed with everything mentioned), U nor anyone else refuted it..I waited for someone to counter it..didn't happen ..so I was left to think it had a lot of validity.. Till now..now U say it's dead wrong..WELL HOW SO? It's not a matter of U being lucky ..it's not a matter of whether I believe U or not...it's a matter that something isn't right.. I'm always interested in knowing truth..whether it reshapes what I think or percieve.. Soooo once again..put something down...for the ones who call U out ..ignore them..if what was said was wrong ..well it's wrong..but I'd like to see something from what you say..or PM me with the info if you don't want to battle the others.. U always want people to debate U with facts..well it works both ways bro..gimmie some to chew on..

PIT... nope, never answered my questions until that...and funny, you left out the most important aspect... Quote:
As I've already stated,up untill this point,it has been presented as the two of them working jointly to fix this team. By giving the impression that RAC is "solely responsible" for the new hirings of these coaches,it would create the perception that if they fail, they were solely RAC's call and that Phil was not responsible for the failing in any way, shape or form.
1. who are these people that believe RAC spawned the changes?...anyone with an ounce on common sense knows it was a PR thing (even if your believe it was Phil PR, not Browns PR)...that has already been pointed out to you, to your 'blind eye'...
2. IF we assume some dumb fans believe that these are RAC's changes, Savage is safe until 1 year later, when, if you assume we'll suck again, we will fire RAC and bring in a new HC...then the heat is on Savage (with a 2nd/3rd coaching staff)...so he'd have bought himself 1 FREAKING YEAR!...nonsense!...
Quote:
And faiing here wheather it be this year OR next year OR the year after that will help him get a better position elsewhere? In case you're unaware of it,a major "failure" on your resume,no matter where it is,is very counterproductive in furthering your career.
obviously, failing isn't good...thanks for that gem of knowledge...but if he were to be able to use the excuse that he wasn't given adequate time to build the team, he'd likely be in better shape to win a good position than if he had gone an extra year or two with multiple coaching staffs...at that point, he couldn't pass the buck, get it?...
Quote:
Exactly. That's why you would put yourself in a position of blaming the failing here on someone elses shoulders. So in the event things fail here, they take the fall rather than you.
well, that's the short-sightedness of your theory...blame someone once when there is question as to who bears more responsibility, you may save your job for a bit...blame someone else a second time and see if you get the same benefit of the doubt...you'll likely be fired with no letters of reference...where does that leave you LONG-TERM?...
not sure why i bother...you and i won't change our opinions...so i think i'm gonna jump on your bandwagon, in a way...i can assume Savage IS a snake, and that his selfish obsession with saving his own hide may get RAC fired...but the only way the snake can save his job long-term is to stock this team with talent, which i'm all for...HAIL THE SNAKE!...
Browns fans are born with it...

It's real simple but you want to attempt to find something deeper. Have at it.
But Phil and RAC have presented this entire building project as a united front. Now,Phil seems to be distancing himself from the new hires shifting the responsibility strictly on RAC's shoulders. That doesn't just buy him a year. That is an attempt to seperate the two from the standpoint of these new hires.
That doesn't just "buy him a year",that buys him the right to "a new coach". See.if you don't think that RAC and Savage have been being judged "together" to this point,I don't think you have a clue as to what's going on. So you can save your sanctimonious BS for somebody else. They have been a "unit" building this team to this point. Now all of a sudden, only one of them is responsible for the hiring of the new coaches?
GMAFB. IF Phil can sale this bill of goods,he buys himself the right to fire RAC next year if things go belly up and point the finger straight at RAC for the flop. Result? He gets to stay while hiring another HC. Right now? I feel if RAC had been let go,Phil would have had to go too. If you don't have a clue how that is being played out, quit blaming others.

Dude how in the world can you keep saying that? How is he distancing himself? One the OC COMING IN is a local guy(something Phil likes), he is considered a bright mind..I don't see any distancing but trying to inject a PERSONALITY into the offense..something Rac has a inability to do.

You are coming up with this whole cloth and telling OTHERS that they are looking deeper? It's as simple as this. The media and fans have been screaming that RAC has no input in the coaching decisions. Savage refuted that statement and in doing so maintained RAC's credibility as a coach. The rest is you simply digging for deeper meaning of some sinister plot. I guess accusing others of your own actions is a good way to stop them from calling you on it, though.

``I've never had a coach come to me and say `This is what we are going to do' or `This is the play we are going to run.' The coaches don't report to Phil Savage, I promise you that,'' he said. ``Romeo is responsible for the coaching staff. Do I have some input or suggestions? Absolutely. Does he have input or suggestions to make when it comes to personnel, free agents or the draft? Absolutely. ``It's his coaching staff just like it's my scouting staff." Nah. He's not saying that it's all on RAC.

Pit, I think your looking at it one way, but, for what it's worth, my opinion is that Phils not distancing himself. I feel as if he's merely answering the criticism that's going around that RAC isn't making any decisions..
The idea that RAC is a Lame Duck or "On his way out" etc etc is what I think Phil is trying to clearify by indicated that RAC is making the decisions,, but with his input.
One thing for sure, one of us is reading it all wrong

One more thing. We fired Lott because he yelled at opponents? I think it was way deeper than that.
I'm sure it does as well. However, acting like an ass didn't help his cause.
Quote:
How do we let Leon's actions go, but fire a coach for yelling at opponents? How in the heck is that worse than calling out teammates, coaches, and the organization itself?
Exactly who has let Edwards' actions go? Everyone on the team has stated Edwards needs to grow up, though in far more polite terms, terms that are required in today's world. You always seem to attempt to paint the picture that everyone is giving Savage or Edwards a pass. It isn't working.
Setting that aside, there's a hundred S&C coaches that can do the same job, but there is only one guy who was taken 3rd in the draft, and who's very nature means that he has to be handled differently. It's not right, it's not fair, and it's not pretty, but it's reality, and dealing with an asst. coach is different than dealing with a $40 million dollar investment who's 6'4 and can run a 4.4 40.
You're too smart to compare the two. Why you even went there is beyond me, unless you engaged your fingers before your brain.

No, Pit, what he is saying is that he is REFUTING the claims that RAC has no power. He is reaffirming the opposite to be true. Yet you have to look for some sinister and deep seeded meaning beyond what is simply put there. He is refuting reports that RAC has nothing to do with decisions being made. How much simpler can it be put?

Here's how "simple" it COULD have been.....................
"We looked over the available coaches and agree this was the best way to move forward"
or
"RAC has made suggestions as to these replacement coaches and after looking at it, I wholeheartidly support those decisions."
That's how simple it "could have been".
And Damon was right. There's more than one fairly obvious way to read this. Some see it one way, while others see it another. Time will give us a much better indication of the direction this is headed.

Yes, some will take what he said at face value and others will try to invent evil intentions and make things up.

So Pit, it wasn't so much what he said, but how he phrased it that's causing you to feel as you do?

Pretty much.
Terminology adds a great deal to intent IMO.
If you look at the "quote" at face value,it basicly says these coaching changes were "strictly RAC's decisions".
And a further indication is "He has his coaching staff and I have the scouting department". (paraphrasing here)
But it clearly shows a distinction and seperation of powers and who runs each department. Such sentiments have not been described in the past in any way to my recollection.
Now that could mean,as some suggest, that he is trying to dispell RAC as being a lame duch coach, which also takes some imagination.
Or,it could be him trying to distance himself from Romeo by saying "I'm responsible for the talent and he's responsible for the play on the field."
Either is plausible but neither is clear.IMO

It is rather funny isn't it... Sad and funny..
But you know Mav, there are some here who swear they have connections within the Browns,,,,So they know things nobody else does
stick around, I think it's gonna get entertaining....
You are incredible. You are one of the main people I refer to when I talk about people who blast my statements and then ignore them when they come true. Then, you start all over again. You are a phony and are one of the main reasons I quit posting last time.
Verse... I remember when you stopped posting for a while... Was around FA period IIRC... I for one appreciate the heads up that you give around here although I will admit, sometimes I can't decipher some of which is personal oppinion and which is info that we may not hear...
Would you mind shedding some light on where some of the theories on here have gone astray? I have for the most part stayed out of the RAC/OPie conspiracy theory because in the grand scheme of things, it makes no difference if we don't improve but I am still STUNNED at the hiring of the DB we stole from Saban as our O-Line Coach and wondering WTF our FO was thinking...

And Dan Quayle says potatoe. So we're missing yet another theory that I'm sure will develop at some point in the future!
