Thats funny, I know the feeling.

I find this discussion interesting since NASCAR has been brought into it.

To take it further, lets look past just NASCAR and look at any motorsport for that matter. As someone who has grown up around various motorsports I can say without any doubt say that some of these are incredible athletes and what they do is 100% a sport. Have any of you rode motocross? or raced quads? I mean competitively? Yeah the bike plays a part in it but it is still the physical skill of the rider that is the biggest part in it. I grew up racing on dirt tracks. Go Karts first and then quarter midget sprint cars. Even as a young kid, if I ran in a 50 lap main I would get out of the car exhausted. The drivers who were a little bigger and stronger, who maybe had more endurance were the ones who would still be driving their cars just as strong at lap 40 as they were at lap 5. Most times that would be the difference in the race.

All of them take a physical skill and those physical skills are competing against someone elses physical skill, so therefore they are sports.Hence the term MOTORSPORTS.

No, she's just clueless.....

Kingo - no, I've never ridden a bike of any sort. About the closet was getting on my friend's crotch rocket, starting it up, try to get going then letting go of the clutch. It immediately stopped, and I went forward and drilled my nuts. After that, I said "no thanks."

So take that experience and think of a guy taking a similar bike to that but even more insanely fast and powerful and racing other riders at speeds up to and sometimes over 200 MPH,going through turns so fast ,leaning so hard into the turn that their knee is scraping the ground, and doing this for long periods of a time. Dudes not a skilled athlete? Its not a sport?

I guess I always think of sports as people running around, not riding around.

Regardless of what NASCAR is, I don't like it. Just too damn boring watching cars go round, and round, and round, and round, and round, and round, and round, and round, and round, and round, and round, and round, and round, and round, and round, and round, and round, and round (do I have to do it 500 times? )

Just not interesting in the least bit. I've been over the in-laws when my brother-in-law was watching a race. Sat there for an hour and didn't have the least bit of interest. Might be fun to actually get in the car and rev 'er up, but watching it is like watching paint dry IMO.

I understand, but whether you like it or not has nothing to do with whether or not it is a sport, or whether they are athletes or not.

Physical yes, do injuries happen? Yes. Is it legitimate with real winners and losers? No. Is everything scripted? Mostly Is it all an act? Yes even by the performers admissions it is.

It's not a real sport. I love watching it but it's a soap opera for men

Like you said, there are two sides to this view and the NASCAR fans are so militant in their beliefs that it's "athletic" and a "sport" that it's comical.

Nothing funnier than a diehard NASCAR fan..

Sure there is something funnier......people such as yourself who feel that you can change the definition of something based on your opinion.....as I've said already.

It's a sport and the drivers are athletes whether you believe so or not. By definition.....which you cannot change based upon your personal opinion.

WWE is not a sport. By definition.

Pretty simple.

I never did street racing, but I rode motercross for years. Some bikes were just to tall for my short little legs . MOST dirt bikes over 250cc were just to tall for my legs

Motercross? HEE HEE you are a redneck

I have had 125'sthat were too tall for me, and I am 6 foot. Its not so much as the CCs as it is how the bike is set up. I have a buddy who is 5 foot 4,built like a bowling ball ,he rides 250s all day. He usually has to put a smaller set of wheels on them and bring the frame shock down a bit.

I dont ride motocross anymore, except for playing around in the fields one in awhile. It was just getting too hard on my back and knees. I was going riding on the weekends and then being too sore to go to work on Mondays.. Now I like to putt around on my utility quad.

What about jockeys and horse racing? The jockey isn't running, he's riding, is he an athlete? The horse is running and I would too if I was gagged with someone sitting on my back whipping my ass.

I dont know, does the physical skill of the jockey make the horse better? it also brings up the debate of whether the horse is considered an athlete.

I wouldn't think the jockey is an athlete.

He's a 90 pound runt with a whip and a goofy outfit.

But what i am saying is,can any 90 lb runt with a whip and a goofy outfit do, or is there a certain skill to being a jockey. I have heard some interviews with jockeys and they have said they do a incredible amount of training.

I dont know enough about riding a horse to comment. What about bullriders? Are those guys great athletes? Or just nutcases ?

I'm sure they do have to have skill. Not just anybody can do that stuff.

But that can be said about a multitude of things from excelling at videogames to cup stacking. There's a blur regarding what would be considered an athlete I guess.

Man, this stupid WWE poll....... couldn't it have been something simpler, like which chick is hotter?

Hey, that's a good idea....

Now don't get offended.

It's actually a good discussion, I meant stupid as in frustrating, because it's tough to discern what are athletes and what are sports.

j/c...

By definition, the WWE is a sport. Deepthreat already posted this, but here it is again....

an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

Link

Keyword in the definition is *OFTEN* a competitive nature.

Do you have to be athletic to do it? Yes.

Do you have to have skill to do it? Yes.

Does it require physical poweress? Yes.

Then by definition, it is a sport. Period, end of discussion...

I think the irony in this discussion is the fact that the Wrestlers and Owner of the WWE don't refer to it as a sport. It's Sports Entertainment.

If they don't call it a sport why exactly are we debating it?

Lots of games could be considered sports...hell, even cornhole could be a sport.

And, we all know darts is a sport.

Yes, *often*, as in it doesn't have to be competitive nature, but *often* sports are. Like basketball, baseball, football, etc. But sometimes, they are not competitive, ie. Wrestling.

Oh, I agree. I should have added something to show I was being sarcastic.

But my Academic Team (a trivia similar to Jeopardy, but with teams, and no stupid categories or having to state the answer in the form of a question) is a sport. After all, we do have to hit the buzzers.
