Mr. Harrison isn't going to Washington; Steeler spurns Obama
By Chris Chase
On Thursday, President Obama will welcome the Pittsburgh Steelers to the White House to honor the team for its recent Super Bowl victory. But, just like in 2006 when the Steelers had a post-title meeting with George W. Bush, defensive MVP (and Super Bowl hero) James Harrison won't be in attendance. But he has a good reason:

"This is how I feel -- if you want to see the Pittsburgh Steelers, invite us when we don't win the Super Bowl. As far as I'm concerned, he [Obama] would've invited Arizona if they had won."

Usually, when a sentence begins with "as far as I'm concerned," it ends with an opinion, not an incontrovertible fact. Harrison's comment is akin to saying, "As far as I'm concerned, George Washington was the first president."

Of course the Cards would have received the White House invite if they had won. Winners get to go meet the president, losers don't. They also get the trophy, the parade and those hats that say "Super Bowl champs". I don't think James Harrison(notes) turned down any of those things, which makes his refusal to go to the White House a tad hypocritical.

When Harrison won the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year award, he didn't decline and say, "As far as he was concerned, they would've given this award to someone else if they had had a better defensive season." And when he scored that touchdown in the Super Bowl after returning an interception 100 yards, I'm pretty sure Harrison didn't tell the ref to take the points of the board because, as far as he was concerned, if Larry Fitzgerald(notes) had caught him, he wouldn't have scored.

As far as I'm concerned, James Harrison is sort of a fool. If he doesn't want to go to the White House, fine. (Although I can't imagine why anybody wouldn't want to meet the President of the United States.) But don't make a lame excuse in an attempt to justify your decision. Leave that for NFL refeeres.

What's so bad about that? I don't care to meet the President...ANY President for those of you that may think I just mean Obama.

Well, I disagree. I'm about as conservative as anybody but I would consider it an honor to meet and shake hands with any president, even one that I generally don't agree with.

Of course I would consider it an honor and a privilege to meet you too, so my standards aren't very high.

Maybe... Harrison is secretly afraid that if the Steelers go to the White House, that Obama will redistribute him, Hines Ward, and Troy Palamalu to teams with lesser talent, just to make things fair....

I thought that too. But he turned down the trip a few years ago when they won and G.W. was in the white house. At least he's consistent....

He did? hmm why didn't he just say " i don't care about the white house" or something then....this made it sound like he is so special and needy....

I would love to meet him...not because i think he is god or somethin'...just cuz it's THE PRESIDENT.

I will say that I don't care who the President is, if I have a chance to meet him or her, I am doing it.

Just imagine meeting someone who, while you may not agree with his or her politics, is the freakin' leader of the free world.

I couldn't stand George Bush, but by God, if I had a chance to go to the White House and talk with him, I would have been there in a second.

I would be courteous, polite and respectful if I were ever to meet the President, regardless of who he was, just because he is the President if he showed up at my front door. But I'm not adjusting my schedule or going out of my way to meet him.

I lost all respect for Harrison at the Super Bowl when he roughed the freak out of this Cardinal on a special teams play... it wasn't necessary...

Clearly many have the desire to meet "celebrities" and high powered people. Me? I'll avoid all of them, thanks. They are regular folks just like all of us, IMO. They just have careers that put them in the public eye.

No, the President isn't a "celebrity"... I wouldn't drive 20 minutes to meet most celebrities... this is the President... I view it as different...

But beyond that, it's a team event, like the parade, the ring ceremony, whatever else they have planned. He should participate as part of the team...

And even further beyond that, his reason that the President wouldn't meet with them if they lost is just stupid and well worth making fun of.

This president is most certainly a "celebrity". It's the reason he's where he is.

This is a big non-story for me just as it was when he did it the last time.
