There are some nice morsels in this article. I wonder if there really was a country club atmosphere under Romeo.... Quote:
NFL Insider: Snap impressions from the first full Mangini minicamp for the Cleveland Browns by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter Saturday May 23, 2009
BEREA, Ohio -- Some observations from one day at Browns minicamp ... • It's loud. Coach Eric Mangini has the music cranked up. Mangini, 38, was raised under Bill Belichick on Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen. So those artists are featured prominently in his sound mix. But he's got a diverse group to cater to -- players come from every social group -- so there is country, hip hop and rap played, too. What do the Polynesians listen to? There were glitches in the sound system that have to be corrected. But it's very evident that the injection of youth in the coaching staff will result in a livelier camp.
• Defensive line coach Bryan Cox is the most vocal assistant coach on the field.
• Jamal Lewis spent a lot of time with a trainer, pulling a sled as he rehabs back from off-season ankle surgery. He said, "I just do what the trainers ask me to do, follow the protocol the doctors gave me. I'm feeling good and moving good and just ready to get back out there." When will that be? "I'm not sure," he said. Lewis turns 30 on Aug. 26. The backups are Jerome Harrison and rookie James Davis.
• They're organized. This was obvious on the first day of rookie minicamp. With the veterans now in, the entire practice session runs crisply and smoothly. Very little standing around and wasteful time on the field. If the players don't know where to go, they are hollered at promptly to get to the right place.
• The Browns' defensive huddle was often led by energetic assistant coach Bryan Cox, a long-time linebacker in the NFL. • Davis comes from the same Atlanta neighborhood as Lewis and attended the same Douglass High School. "He's a hard-working player," Lewis said of Davis. "I kind of followed him over the years. He's a hard runner, a big back. He's a prototype running back. I look for good things from him." For the record, Lewis and Davis are both listed at 5-11, but Lewis, at 245 pounds, is 30 pounds heavier. • It's way too early to say who's the No. 2 receiver behind Braylon Edwards. But Brian Robiskie didn't hurt his chances with two TD catches from Brady Quinn in red-zone drills. Robiskie dived to make one in the left corner and caught another underneath coverage inside the goal line. Yes, Robiskie looks as polished as advertised.
• When the No. 1 offensive unit lined up, Rex Hadnot was at left guard and not Eric Steinbach. What to make of that? It's no secret that Mangini wants to beef up the line and the wiry Steinbach doesn't fit that mold. The coaches are just experimenting at this point. The rest of the line had Joe Thomas at left tackle, Hank Fraley at center, Floyd Womack at right guard and Ryan Tucker at right tackle. Who knows how long it will be before first-round pick Alex Mack moves ahead of Fraley, but it's surely not going to be the third day of minicamp. Thomas, incidentally, had to run a lap around the practice field after false-starting on one play.
• Second-year linebacker Alex Hall was on the No. 1 unit at strongside linebacker (Willie McGinest's old spot). It was a bit of a surprise to see Hall, now wearing No. 51, ahead of David Bowens. Eric Barton and D'Qwell Jackson will be stalwarts at inside linebacker. Weakside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley also saw some plays on the other (left) side. The old coaching staff adamantly refused to move Wimbley around in an effort to unlock his pass-rush potential. If Mangini is anything like Belichick -- and we know that he is -- he will be much more open to trying Wimbley, and others, at different spots.
• It's possible two ex-Jets will man the starting end spots in the 3-4 alignment. Those would be Kenyon Coleman at left end and C.J. Mosley at right end, with Shaun Rogers in the middle. Holdover ends Corey Williams and Robaire Smith are coming off injuries and were not in the mix on Thursday. Tough to say what Shaun Smith's future is with the new regime. According to sources, Smith was told in his meeting with the coaches to "Shape up and shut up."
• Abram Elam and Brodney Pool were the No. 1 safeties. Elam, the former Kent Stater, said in his most recent blog posting at abeelam.com that he intends to attend some KSU games this year. At the end of Elam's postings is this signoff: "Abram Elam is a starting safety with the Cleveland Browns."
Mangini's the man: A few players who made the interview rounds on Thursday left no doubt who's in charge.
Asked about the trade of Kellen Winslow, Edwards said, "Coach Mangini is the head guy. He's made decisions based on what he thinks is going to get us back on the right track and moving forward in the 2009 season. By him making that decision and having the draft he had and picking up some players that he has, I'm sure he has a plan. I'll stick by him right now. That's my coach and that's who I'm going to play for and who I support."
Asked about a timeline for naming a starting quarterback, Quinn said, "I just take my directions from coach Mangini. Whatever he says, goes."
Quick outs: Video director Pat Dolan has left the Browns for another job. ... Jim Brown, executive advisor, continues to have a presence with the club under the new regime. He attended minicamp.
Deja vu: Yes, the Browns did have a lot of interest in Cleveland State basketball player J'Nathan Bullock, said agent Andy Simms. Bullock signed with the New York Jets after the draft because Simms foresaw a better opportunity there. The Jets had only one tight end under contract at the time.
Bullock, 6-3 1/2 and 240 pounds, is trying to follow the path of former Kent State basketball star Antonio Gates, who went on to be a Pro Bowl tight end with San Diego. Gates is 6-4 and 260. Bullock hasn't played football since the fall of 2004, but reportedly was impressive at rookie camp earlier this month.
Like Bullock, the Browns let Gates escape them in 2003. Coincidentally, Steve Hagen was the Browns tight end coach then and now. It's not his fault.

Good news from Grossi.
During his first year here, like everyone else, I thought that Shaun Smith was one of the few we had with any potential. But I have realized through interviews, and his acting on the field, that he's a jackass.
It makes me worried that Grossi is talking about two DE's being ex-Jets that might be starting. I have higher hopes for Corey Williams this year, and I only expect that may be Coleman(?) might start over Robaire Smith. But even so, Robaire isn't bad, I'm just nervous about an achillies injury. He just might not be the same.
It's also good to hear that we have a more regimented practice that is more productive. I really don't think our team is without talent, we do have some good players and I really believe that we'll see a big improvement over last year's performance.

Hadnot at LG...hopefully that was to save ES's back from some wear n tear early on? But with no hitting I don't like the decision too much. Does this mean we are eliminating the Zone Blocking Schemes???
Are we going to a traditional In-Line Power Blocking scheme - usually seen by Parcells?

Tough to say what happened behind the scenes with RAC but what was open to the public was slow and lazy. Everyday that I attended training camp during his stint (about 16 days total) the practices and drills looked stale.
Changing this may be EM's greatest contribution.

Just imagining Joe Thomas, the good ol' boy, having to run a lap... lol...
That Eric Steinbach comment threw me way off.. I know he is smaller.. but I thought he does well.. Never thought Hadnot would be playing LG... I think he is pretty good.. but man...
I expect good things out of our OLB's.... Hall has potential.. but he needs to get stronger...
Funny comment on Shaun Smith... Cox is just the guy he needs to get in his arse..
James Davis is going to beast... Period!!
They didn't mention anything about the corners...
Can't wait til' august..

thing is that ES is NASTY and right now there is no hitting - Hadnot probably "LOOKS" more intimidating - we've all seen this in our playing days and I don't care what level that was. There's always this big monster looking kid that is as soft as a pillow and the coaches love him and the players always got to do collective as he gets more chances than in a Game of Monopoly.
When a pass rush is happening and Hadnot is in there - NOT ES - the coaches hopefully will end this experiment. Hadnot will be a good Interior OL backup...LG, C and RG. But he sucked at pass blocking last year at RG at LG he will be facing the quicker more talented pass rushing DT...it won't be pretty

Defensive line coach Bryan Cox is the most vocal assistant coach on the field.
imagine that- he was loud and abnoxious as a player, i bet he can light a fire under these guys.
Robiskie looks as polished as advertised excellent, but that was never the knock on him- the fear is he as already peaked and what you see is what you get.
Rex Hadnot was at left guard and not Eric Steinbach scatching my head on this one, but Mangini did say they would be moving guys around and trying them in different spots....
Edwards said......"I'm sure he(Mangini) has a plan. I'll stick by him right now" maybe i'm just reading that one wrong- but does that mean when the losses start Edwards will no longer be buying into the system??? It just sends the wrong message-- "I will stick with him"- end of story--- the "right now" makes it sound like he could quit on the team again.

I know that's not you saying that,, but you know what... SO WHAT? If he's polished, can catch the ball, runs precise routes and isn't afraid of the middlle of the field (all appear to be true by the way) then if that's all the better he gets,,, Tell me again, what's the big problem with that......

I can't believe a guy just out of college has already maxed out his talent, so IMO Robiskie still has some growth in him.
Yeah bigf00t, I remember Cox being a mouthy hard-nosed LB.... giving Bills fans the one-finger salute when he was a Dolphin... both hands, also hahaha. you KNOW that a guy like that has some jam (abrasive, edgy personality) and hopefully it will rub off on some players.

Its the honeymoon period with the players .. but so far I like what i've heard ... fr all the moaining and bitchin some of us did over the Rodgers thing .. at the end of the day he apears to have gotten it taken care of ...
he seems like he is going to be a task master .. gonna hold folks accountable ...
I love a player running for jumping off sides .. physical mistakes will happen .. MENTAL MISTAKES can and should be punished ... (maybe thats why he traded KW .. he figured he's spend 50% of practice running and would be to worn out to do anything after that .. *L*) ..
I love hes trying players all over .. its a good time for that .. U all need to chill ont he Hadnot/ES thing .. NO WAY ES does not start there unless hes hurt .. its a good time for hadnot to get some Reps there .. same with all the other OLman .. its a GOOD TIME for Reps in other areas ..
so far so good with this guy ... everything hes said he has done so far .. and thats a VAST IMPROVEMENT over every other regime we've had so far .. all the others talked about character and almost every single one of them made there first pick a HUGE QUESTIONABLE CHARACTER PICK .. not these guys .. they picked NO QUESTIONABLE CHARACTERS ..
this guy has a long ass way to go .. but he has gotten off on a MUCH BETTER foot than all the others ... for that I am glad ... lets see how he does over the next 3 years or so ...

Nice read with a few interesting bits mixed in-
The OL changes (though early) The DL and Shaun Smith being told to shut his trap Hall as the starting OLB No mention of the CBs and who will play nickel No mention of Veikune and if he still looked good with the vets in place
Thanks for the read.

I'm betting your right on that Lamp.. but if not,, how bad is it to have a 3rd down guy that isn't afraid of the middle, catchs what is thrown, runs precise routes and finds the End Zone? How bad can it be if that's all we ever see out of the guy
I guess the flip side of that is that College stars don't always have talent that translates into the pros... So maybe that's what they mean when they say he's a finished product and won't improve... I ain't buying it, but that may be what they mean

If he is as refined as they say then his talent will improve soley base on experience. Thats good and bad. I think the big question that everyone has with him is his ability to get separation and get open. And we wont know until we see him in preseason.

I don't really understand the logic behind this, but it's not a big deal. Steinbach will be the starter. I'm also confused as to why they like Hadnot. I've never seen anything in him.

I LOVE this.
Other than that, nothing to comment on really. I like that Hall is starting, and that Robiskie is coming out well. Starting safeties is no surprise, and neither is the end alignment. Williams will start ahead of Mosely once he's healthy.

I was extremely happy about this also. It was one of the top things that stuck out thruout the article. Glad to see that the coaches are putting the players in their place. Especially one that hasnt had many accomplishments on the field. If Crennel didnt want to do it, he should have had a position coach shut up Smith a long time ago.
The one practice I attended in Berea did give me a country club feel. The players did alot of laughing and stretching and coach Crennel did alot of standing on the sidelines with his arms crossed. No teaching. The hardest work I saw was coming from the water boys. They were busting their butts off. The most sweat I saw was when Brady Quinn was signing autographs an hour after everyone else went inside. I dont think he will be doing that this year.

Not directing this at you bigfoot but at the scouts. This is what I dont get, how does a rookie already reach his potential. He hasnt even learned the playbook yet. Its not like hes going to get worse at catching or running patterens. If anything he might get slower. But if you can do anything else, getting slower doesnt get you out of the NFL. Look at David Patten. He never had height, blazing speed, or out powered DBs, yet hes still in the NFL. I just dont see how a guy that young and has yet played against NFL DBs has reahed his potential. Hes going to get smarter and better at reading coverages and beating defenders off the line. It shouldnt be a knock if he has reached his potential as long as he maintains his potential.

I think he is close to fulfilling his potential, but that isn't a bad thing. All that is being said is that he most likely won't be an elite wide receiver. He will be a solid player, but there is nothing wrong with that.

Classic, even though I don't agree with some of the offseason moves I do like the new approach that is being brought in by this coaching staff.

Hall starting at OLB is the reason we didnt draft to fill that spot. rewatch the games last year when this kid got the start. He is a natural and if he can add some strength he has the potential to become our best player on defense.
Lewis maybe it was the ankle injury but he had no first step. I have a hard time trusting a 30 year old back that seemed to hit the running back wall for the 2nd time.
Harrison its time for him to shine.
Eric Barton will have a tough time beating out Bell, Veikune or even Leon Williams. I think our opening day linebackers will be Wimbley, Jackson, Veikune and Hall.
Joe Thomas running a lap for jumping. Its about time players were held to some accountability.
Hadnot at LG well ES had some injuries last year so I dont put to much into this other than he needs to get 100% healthy.
Hank has tremendous value on this team whether or not he is starting at center. Personally i would dump the fullbacks and use hank there when I needed some pop lol.
BE could have worded his answers a tad better hey its tough walking the fine line between a friend and hurting yourself with the boss.

I agree. Harrison getting many more carries would be exciting. Question is, how would Lewis perform as a backup/secondary RB. Can he make that transition? Or would James Davis even be better than him. I like Jamal Lewis, but for his style of running he has gotten a little over the hill. And he won't come back next season any better than this season. Lewis will perform better as our O-Line performs better, but I will say that a new running back would definitely be refreshing. And I like Lewis, he's a strong blocker, and he works hard and is a leader, but Harrison might be better. I'd like to see him have a chance.

I like what I've heard about Veikune, but I also am interested to see what Beau Bell can do. He's an ILB and was our top pick last year, I really do believe that he should have some sort of potential. I just want to see what our talent can do with a new coaching staff.

that pretty much sums up a Fred Beletnikoff oe a Brian Brennan.

I think Lewis can probably play another 3 or 4 years but it should be more in a jerome bettis type of role. Let the other 2 do the work and let Lewis finish them off.
I like pretty much everything the new regime has done and is doing thus far. I dont like Mangini but he is running things the right way. Players are being held accountable. They have a plan and are filling the roster according to that plan.
They want a power base running game so they bring in a powerhouse center and guard and cut their finesse RT.
They want to run a timing pass offense so they draft two great route runners and all the vets they sign have been good route runners.
They want to cut down on penalties and mistakes. As diam said dumping Winslow was a great move in that regard. Having players run laps when they screw up is terrific.
The Browns were soft so they bring in tough guys and begin installing drills that will test your manhood lol.
Also they are making decisions for themselves. They studied the game tapes on this group. Phil and Romeo came in said everyone sucks and began cleaning everything out. this group is finding out for themselves. Thats why you see Hall starting guys like Harrison and Quinn being given the opportunity to show what they have.

like what I've heard about Veikune, but I also am interested to see what Beau Bell can do. He's an ILB and was our top pick last year,
Bell was our top pick yes, but don't forget that pick was in round 4. veikune is a 2nd rounder.
I would be surprised if Bell beats out David, If David stays inside. I have a feeling he is going to be a wild card guy. Maybe our T.Suggs moving all over. Either way I would bet Barton starts over either Viekune or Bell.
