This is a copyright question.
I want to have that photo blown up into a wall mural and I want to go about it the legal way. I could find some seedy shop to do it probably but I don't want to go that road.

I am trying to find out if this was a local papers photo. Does anybody remember seeing this photo in a paper years ago? Hopefully it's a local papers photo not an AP photo. I could track down permission much easier to use it locally than nationally if they even let me use it at all.
Any info would be of great help.
Thanks.

I use it as my desktop photo.
I hope I can track down info on how to use this.
And hopefully they don't want crazy money.

Is this going to be in your house? I can't believe it would be a problem if it is going to be. Who would ever know? I'm sure you aren't the first person to paint a wall mural from a picture that didn't get permission.

Now if it is going to be in a public place I might want to get the rights.

It's my understanding that as long as your not gonna profit from the use of the picture in any way, you can use it. Once you charge $ for viewing it....than you need permission to use it.

That makes sense. I know several people who have done this in there homes for OSU photos here in Columbus and never have they had to get permission as far as I know.

Did they used to do it a lot? Might be more than a few pictures out there.

What are these "touchdowns" you speak of?

This may seem a bit simplistic of an answer.. but the first people I'd talk to would be the Browns. I imagine after some transferred calls you'd end up talking to someone who will have the answer for you or be able to point you in the right direction.

I called it a mural by mistake. Instead of a painting, I want it blown up into a giant piece of wallpaper. Same copyright concerns though.

If I find anything out, I will post it on here in case anybody else wants to do something with that image also.
If I could do it, I would put it up there copyright or not. I'm not going to be profiting off of it. Just a fan who wants that on his wall. The problem is finding a print shop to do it without the copyright release.

The image is in the public domain already. So, as long as it is for non-profit personal use, then I don't think that there is any issue at all in taking that image and having it blown up to put on your own wall.

If you were doing it to sell them, then there'd be an issue in a big way.

I'm not 100% certain of the above, but that is how I see it.

So you know, it's from Sports Illustrated, The Year in Pictures : 1989. - I had this magazine and remember the photo very, very, well.

There is an RV that is always in the Muni Lot that has a picture wrap on it that has this photo on the back. If it's on there, then I'm sure you could use it in your room...

I do know of that RV with this pic on it.
It looks awesome. I find no problem with me having it on my wall.
I'm not selling it, not making money off of it. There should be no problem.

how many people make up their own Browns shirts and wear them to camp and to games. The Browns well I can't say logo but the likeness of the helmet and stripes have been done many times on shirts by fans. They make them for themselves and don't sell them.

If I put this image on my wall and SI wanted to sue me over it, would be tasteless. Just a fan wanting to decorate his wall. Not making any money off it. I see no problem going forward with it if I can find somebody to do it.

Been thinking about it more, having someone paint it on the wall would be cool, kind of a abstract painting, but I bet it would cost some major bucks.
I want it on a wall that is 16' long by 8' high. Anybody know what painters charge?

Wonder if they ever took the Quincy Morgan pic off that RV?

Muni Lot got under the owners skin a year or two ago from what I recall from a bar conversation with them, and they go somewhere else now, maybe the Pit, not sure though.

I don't know if I remember 100% whether I saw him in the muni lot last year. I don't always remember what goes on there . We were tailgating right by him in Buffalo though last year, but I don't remember if Quincy was still on there or not...

Absolutely... Although my 74 Winnebago that I paid $800 for last year comes in a close second

The photograph is copyrighted, regardless of it's presence in the "public domain."

For your intended purpose it should never be an issue at all, because as others said you aren't using it to make money. There are photo shops that won't touch pictures that you don't "own" the rights to.....

Here's a decent FAQ about photo copyrights:
