Do folks in Ohio still use that "knee high" expression in refernce to sweet corn? My dad would always say that when I was a kid and we were riding along out in the country. What little I see of corn out here is currently 8 feet. A local farmer dropped some off at the office for us 2 weeks ago. It was good but certainly not as good what I grew up on.
Only other such thing I recall is how "Pop" would forecast rain whenever we saw the cows in the pasture laying down.
You got any to share?

Knee high by the 4 of july. Absolutely, people still say that. It doesn't mean anything anymore, but people still say it.
Perfect example: our garden. We planted 4 rows of corn, about 3 - 3 1/2 weeks later we planted 4 more rows. Just put the last 4 rows in yesterday. Spreads the "harvest" out for us.

Oh, forgot - the corn you're probably seeing - at 8 ft? - probably field corn. Farmers use - and this spelling will be special - annhydrous? ammonia to fertilize it. Not something I'd suggest to garden people. With good reason.
As for "sayings"? Did you know cows and horses stand with the ass facing towards a storm? They do.

I remember that....was thinking that the other day as I passed a Tennessee cornfield....it's about shoulder high here.....get to plant sooner.

If you plant early enough,...it's just a measuring stick,....we didn't get ours in until 3 June becasue of the wet turf.

Cows laying down meant the fish would not be biting....
Another old one I recall was that if you see the backs of the leaves on trees then it's going to rain. I found this to be true for the most part because it was usually strong t-storm winds that allowed you to see the backs of the leaves.

Only other one I remember is that if the flies are landing on you and biting, a storm is coming. I don't think it had a cute little rhyme, though if it did it might say "Bit by a fly, watch the sky." or "Flies are filthy, better get the alcohol." or something catchy like that ...

I live in the 'burbs. Don't think I would like the country at all, and not much of a big city guy either.
As far as eating food you grow..... there's not much "farm foods" that I eat. Except the ones you slaughter.

Happy Independence Day to all!
We all need to remember...we have a lot of troops all over the world fighting for our freedom!
We have been enjoying lots of BBQ...a few beers...and watching baseball...and soon will be watching fireworks!
