Yesterday I saw that the U.S. Dept of Labor unemployment rate for June 2009 was announced as 9.5%, the highest it has hit in 26 years. Where's the outrage?

Well then I'll add this - BusinessWeek reports that over the last decade, from May 1999 to May 2009, private sector jobs in the country have risen by just 1.1% - the lowest 10 year gain since the Great Depression.

i'm outraged but for a different reason.

i worked for a company called PolyOne, who shut down 7 of their plants, including mine in Macedonia. my last day of work was feb. 27th. its now into the second week of july and i have gotten *5* - yes FIVE, weeks of unemployment benefits.

i'm outraged all right

What should we be outraged about?

Hey last I heard Oregon's unemployment rate was around the 12% mark. Highest in the country. Part of the reason I went into nursing was its steady climb in demand as the baby boomers age. As long as keep my liscence clean I should never be out of work.

couple of things: first, the gov't. changed how it figures unemployment a few years - many year? back. If the old way of figuring was included, or still used - the unemployment rate would be much higher - 15%? 20%? (now, you're only included in the unemployed if you are still receiving unemployment bene's. If you remain unemployed past your bene's ceasing, you don't count in the total unemployment. Pretty slick trick, huh?)

I wasn't aware of this until late last week, but apparently the county beside me - Williams - has Ohio's highest unemployment rate - something like 18.5%.

I read somewhere that only 20% of college graduates are even employed in the last 2 years. That is scary to me. Any the big notion that the government is hiring, not sure if you have ever applied to usajobs.gov but it is painstakingly difficult and time consuming.

I can also tell you that law grads are really struggling as well. I was one of the very lucky few to find employment.

When are all the baby boomers projected to retire for crying out loud!?

Wow, I had not heard that! If that's true, how long before banks tighten the student loan lending as well?

1 out of 5 college grads in the last 2 years don't have jobs? (in their field at least). That's crazy. And very scary - not just for soon to be grads..........

I'm not a baby boomer - I'm 40. But in all honesty, I don't see very many people my age ever being able to retire - for many reason, of course, but some of those reasons are: I don't see s.s. being around - no biggie, as that doesn't allow you to retire, only helps a bit.

I don't see medicare being anything like it is now, in the future (if that makes sense), and I see tax rates that are going to go through the roof.

I see taxes of all kinds coming, and I see rationed health care "eliminating" many people. Dire outlook. Not good for the heart.

I am fully prepared, and expect to, work till the day I die. In some manner or another - but "retiring" and working at McD's a few hours a week? Not going to happen for me. All the money we've put away? It's nothing in the long term.

True, but you may end up as a government employee.

But soon we may all be comrades in glorious service to our government ......
