CLARE, Mich. -- A group of Michigan police officers is reinforcing a popular cop stereotype.

The group of nine officers with the Clare Police Department are the new proprietors of their own doughnut shop.

The officers say they were so upset that the 113-year-old bakery was going out of business, they decided to pool their money and buy it.

In addition to owning the shop, the officers plan to man the counter and ovens at the new "Cops & Doughnuts" in their free time.

And these enterprising cops are taking it a step further, selling merchandise on their Web site: copsdoughnuts.com

Good for them.. one for saving a historic local business and second for mocking their own stereotype...

My guess is, since the cops will be manning the counter, this wouldn't be a good place for a local hooligan to attempt to rob.

I agree with you. I think it's great they have a good sense of humor.

We used to have an annual 5K charity race at UT Law school called "The Ambulance Chase" up until the local PI lawyers in the Toledo Bar Association threw a hissy fit.

No insight as to why the bakery was going out of business,....

Is the family "tired?"

Is the enterprise bankrupt because the doughnut business is dried up?

Maybe the real estate has been sold for its "retail value." aka, parking lot.

The story doesn't tell one.

I have no idea. I saw the article and thought it was entertaining. Being that this is in Michigan I wouldn't be surprised if the closing was simply due to the economy. Alot of businesses (small and big)are leaving the Michigan areas.

Indeed, no intended slam,...I am just the type that always has continuing questions.

I would have bet on "the economy" though,....
