www.KFFL.comChiefs | Cassel contract details Comment (0) Tweet me! Tue, 14 Jul 2009 12:02:23 -0700 Updating previous reports, John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports the Kansas City Chiefs have signed QB Matt Cassel to a six-year contract extension worth $63 million, according to a source. The deal includes $28 million in guaranteed money. Cassel will receive $40.5 million in the first three years of the contract. ----------- Can I just say that I'd be somewhat weary of Cassel. I mean, he played well in one year, but is he worth THIS extension?

well, we'll see the official numbers soon but when his one-year salary is $14.5 million anyways, almost any extension is more reasonable than that. if he's getting about 7 per year, and the language is that they can cut him after his 3rd (unrealistic, i know), then the chiefs still helped themselves out.

Now lets see if Cassel is a good qb or just a product of the NE system..

my fault, i just realized the quote had the numbers. well 28 million guaranteed, he's probably getting 9-11 million a year? sheesh.

Don't know if he's worth it with KC,,, but with a solid team around him, he seems to do a pretty good job.
However, in KC, he doesn't have a ton of offensive weapons, he doesn't have his OC from NE either. So we'll just see. Guess it all depends on what they surround him with and how that D develops.
Gonna be interesting to watch.

Is he going to have that in KC?

only guy he has now is dwayne bowe, as far as i can remember. he did a good job when he had welker and faulk as dump-offs and moss as a deep threat. i find it hard to believe he'll do as well this year.

I doubt he'll do as well as last year.. and that's a given.. but how big the dropoff is the thing to look at.

Much better option than Matthew Stafford,(6-years, $72 million; $41.7 million guaranteed) or Sanchez (5-years; $50.5M real/$60M max; $28M guaranteed). And instead of a top 5 pick we only used a 2nd rounder. All moves are risky, but Cassel has shown he can play in NFL level, now we just need to protect this investment by solidifying OLine and bringing one more quality WR) As to how he'll do in KC...he is not going to put up the numbers he did in New England for the Chiefs in the 2009 season. But since they did sign him for 6 years, I think that gives them plenty of time to develop, draft, trade for, or pick up free agents that will make him better. I'm more concerned with the success of the long term than I am for the 2009 season. Edit: Also, don't forget the Chiefs got rid of predictable Herm Edwards. That by itself is good for the team.

I figured I'd put this in this thread since it's about a big contract extension. www.KFFL.comRavens | Suggs agrees to deal Wed, 15 Jul 2009 06:35:11 -0700 John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports Baltimore Ravens DL Terrell Suggs has agreed to a six-year, $63 million deal with the team, according to a source. Suggs will receive signing bonus and option bonus money that will total $33.1 million in 2009 and 2010, according to a source. Over the first two years of the contract, Suggs will make $40 million. Over the first three years, he will earn $43.4 million. Over the first four years, Suggs will make $48.3 million.

WOOOWWW. That's a LOT of coin for a LB. He's good, but I'm not sure he's THAT good.

Let's just hope DQ's agent doesn't use this deal as a benchmark!

I'm sure you guys know the Ravens (players and scheme) better than I do, but I think he is worth the money. I was really hoping the Chiefs could try and make a deal for him once I knew they were transitioning to the 3-4/hybrid defense.

He's going to be a huge cog in that defense (even more than he is now) when Ray Lewis retires in the next couple years. And their stellar DBs aren't getting any younger, either. Probably a wise move on their part to shore up the guy who is going to be a likely centerpiece for the next few years.

it is a great re-signing for the ravens but damn, that's a lot of money. pft broke it down saying it pays more than haynesworth's $100 million contract in the first 3 years.
i was really hoping that they couldn't get something done.

Well ... that's almost certainly going to preclude the Ravens fom making any kind of move for a veteran WR ... so that's a plus.

Maybe we could send them Stallworth for Suggs. Both contracts are nuts but at least Suggs is worth some of the money they are paying him.

A pretty big gamble...really any of these new contracts being signed cause there is no Cap coming up - without knowing what a new CBA brings. The economy is changing. Either there will be great INFLATION or there will be DEFLATION many won't be able to afford things and the price must come down. Including Football. The days of soaring profits could be over for them - Salaries must come down. I don't know this is an unprecedented era approaching the NFL soon.
