Just an estimate on your part of those with handicap parking stickers that are really more lazy than disabled.....

Percent more lazy
single choice

I've seen plenty of perfectly healthy people pull into a spot, reach into their glove box, pull it out, and walk on in.

Lazy.

The thing that kills me is these people can't walk and extra 50 feet into the store or mall when they're going to walk a mile while they are shopping. Just completely stupid.

Or these people who will drive around until they find the closest spot so they don't have to park 20 spaces down the aisle. Even though they'll be walking around the mall for 2 hours. I mean, come on.

Sorry, rant over.

I don't like to generalize, so I'm not going to vote. However, I do have a friend who has a handicap sticker from her dad. She's perfectly fine, but she just wants to park close. She certainly fits into the "lazy" category. But, I can't speak for all people with those stickers.

I hope she gets a ticket.

A friend of mine took an elderly woman that uses the hang tag shopping a few weeks ago. The friends car, the other womans tag. The driver got a $15 ticket for hanging it on her mirror. Guess the cop figured she was just "borrowing" it.

I will say, if you can't take someone with a tag to the store and park in handicap with your car, that's B.S.

From the BMV: A parking card may be issued to any Ohio resident who has a mobility disability as outlined in Ohio law. The card may be displayed in any vehicle that is transporting the person who is disabled.

Are there folks who abuse handicap placards? Certainly. However, I wouldn't put that percentage much higher than 10 - 20%. I just don't see able-bodied people hopping out of cars parked in handicap spots all that often. In fact, come to think it, I can't remember the last time I saw that happen. ::shrug::

I see it a lot. Maybe not 50% of the time, but I guarantee that at least a quarter of the people don't need it or use someone else's.

One of the supervisors at work that covers when the managers are gone has a handicapped tag in her car. Not sure what her handicap is. She walks around the hospital all night.

Well, I'm not going to argue over the purely anectdotal evidence we have to go on here. We're all just guessing at this. It would be interesting, however, if somebody were to actually study this to get a more scientific answer. Perhaps somebody already has done that.

I would guess that it's somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2.

I see plenty of people parking in handicapped spots who proceed to run into the store without so much as a hiccup in their step.

Frankly, I think that the fine should be doubled for those who illegitimately use a handicapped parking placard.

When I had a back problem a couple of years ago and could hardly could get to the back of the grocery store without using the cart as a walker I resisted getting a handicap parking permit.

My wife recently asked her doctor about getting one. I was really glad she declined when told she could have it but he recommended that the exercise was good for her.

She is a bit unsteady, so if we lived in a place where there was rain and snow my attitude might be slightly different, but I doubt it. She has cut way back on driving and so I usually take her places and I could easily drop her off at the curb.

How many people use the sticker to park in handicap spots even when the handicapped person isn't in the car? A lot.

It's all about morals,...you either have them or not. I drive Dad's car (hc'ed) all the time to run errands alone and DO NOT park in the designated allowable spot. And if I drop Mom off at K-Mart -- she is also "hc-ed," I do not park in the spot, even though she is "with" me.

I would go so far as to say that if Mom and Dad were in the front seats, and dropped me off to run and get their scrips, that they should NOT park in an HC space,...

It's about how considerate you are. Common sense cannot be legislated.

What really gets me is people who DO NOT EVEN have an HC card, but park in the blue spot anyway.

And not to argue the "other" side, but why do all of these lots have the first 3 spots in each and every row painted for HC's ??

I'll tell you the ones that really irritate me are the "Expectant Mother" spots. WTH? They can't waddle to the store, but they can waddle while they shop for three hours.

25-49 percent.

Rarely do I see a van with a lift in those slots. It's usually some fat slug.

I will admit to taking advantage of those when I was preggers. But I had my own caveat as to when I could/would use them. Last trimester only, really bad weather and no close spots available. Other than that, the exercise was good for me and Anna. I seriously didn't gain ANY weight while pregnant because I walked alot.

I'm sure I wouldn't be bitching about them if I were expecting.

Seriously? I've never seen those. Yet at least.

That's basically the same argument I had about some of these so-called handicapped people, or the people who just park in that spot. You walk around the mall for probably a couple miles, but can't walk 25 yards further in a parking lot. GMAFB.

Never noticed it- I'll have to make it a point to check for it next time. Probably because I skip right past the first few spots automatically.

And yeah, Wal-Mart has a ton of handicap spots. And amazingly, they're all filled. I do see quite a few people shopping in wheelchairs there, but not enough to fill all of them spaces.

Now you've got me thinking whether expectant mothers should or should not be able to park in spots designated for CAR POOL drivers?

I can honestly say I see more more people get out of their car in a handicap spot and walk perfectly fine into the store then I do see people that have visible handicaps.

I just assume stupidity is now being considered a physical handicap by the state.

Just last Wednesday, I was coming out of Bar Louie's at a local mall, and it was pouring rain. As I ran to my car, this car with 4 teens pulled into the HC spot, got out and RAN into the mall through the rain. Lucky for them, the mall security was coming up the same isle, and stopped at their car after obviously seeing what I did.

Not a pound. It's because I started exercising and eating well, where I hadn't been before. The doc wasn't worried. Hell, he was happy I was taking better care of myself. LOL!

I'm pretty sure those are reserved out of courtesy though, you can't be ticketed for parking in one... if a guy did it, he'd just look like a shmuck.

Oh don't even get me started on the people whose only "handicap" is that they are 250 lbs overweight because they've done nothing but sit on their arse and eat for 20 years and this has led to hip, knee, and ankle problems..... There should be special spaces at the very outer edge of the lots where those people have to park and freakin' WALK....

Standard disclaimer: Folks with legitimate gland problems and other MEDICAL reasons why they have trouble controlling their weight are excluded from my rant.

You'll love this one. I had to run to a 24 hour Kroger at about 11:30 at night to grab some allergy meds for my wife. There may have been 5 cars in the lot and they were scattered all over the place.

As soon as I park and begin walking in, I see a person roll in and park in the handicapped space closest to the door, put up a tag, get out and then jog inside.

I love it.

I've told this story before but I was in Salt Lake City 20 years ago and we went to the grocery store with a local guy we knew. He made no attempt to park close to the store and went out of his way to park farther out. I thought it was some vanity over getting his car bumped but he assured me it was not and told me it was a local custom that young healthy folks like us leave spots for those who aren't handicapped but still don't get around as well, elderly, pregnant, people with small kids, etc... It was just the right thing to do. Since then I've tried to do that myself.

Same here and there's also a decent amount of health benefits to it. Our health incentives plan back when I worked for an insurance company talked about how people who are generally more healthy tend to park further away.

And the number of calories you burn in a year actually could make a difference of a few pounds depending on how far away you park from the grocery store, especially when you're either carrying bags or pushing a cart to and from.

BTW, your story reminds me of a really funny commercial where that guy buys that really nice sports car and parks it far away from everyone else. Then the satellite falls on it. Good stuff.

Wow! Total counter to my own observations. The majority of placard holders I see are overweight and should probably park at the far end of the lot for their own good. I rarely see someone with a condition that actually requires a placard. There is also a large percentage of people who I assume have a placard for a family member who is not with them at the moment.
