Clemson probes party that mocked blacks Wed Jan 31, 12:33 AM ET



CLEMSON, S.C. - Clemson University and the NAACP said Tuesday they are investigating an off-campus party held during the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend that some considered offensive because white students drank malt liquor and at least one partygoer wore black face.

Pictures from the party were posted online, and Clemson officials learned of the Jan. 14 party this past weekend. The school is probing whether students were harassed or whether there was underage drinking.

Clemson President James Barker wrote in a letter to students and faculty that he was "appalled, angered and disappointed" by the party, which "appeared to mock and disparage African Americans."

"Many people have been offended and deeply hurt," he said.

The party organizers issued an unsigned letter of apology, saying, "We invited all races and types of peoples and never meant any racial harm."

"We want everyone to know how sorry we are, and that we are willing to do anything to make things right," the letter said.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was looking into the party and at least three similar events at other colleges around the country, said state chapter president Lonnie Randolph.

Clemson has roughly 1,100 black students out of more than 17,000 undergraduates, the university's Web site says.



My problem withthis is that if the College goes to such lengths to find out if underage drinking happened at an off campus party then what about all of the underage alcohol consumption that goes on on campus. And what the hell is the NAACP involved in this for? Bad idea ? Maybe.

My opinion is,who cares.

If they want to have a party that oposes the views of others "off campus" that's their business.

There are some people in this world who need to toughen up or they'll spend their entire lives crying and whining about how mean other people are to them.

We had better investigate as to whether MLK ever drank malt liquor or if any of his followers ever did....I am quite certain that the black face is accurate however.

This travesty deserves the same national apology that the Duke lacrosse team is waiting for for ruining their lives with unfounded accusations of rape from a hooker.

There was another issue about this at a school in Texas a week or two ago.

I can personally say that I know this went on at BW when I was there.

Stupid, absolutely stupid.

It is off campus and I don't give a darn how bad or wrong it was. The University has no say in what happens off campus, now does the NAACP have any jurisdiction over this. If the NAACP has jurisdiction over this, then why are there Neo-Nazis and the KKK still? One would think that since the NAACP is targeting these kids they would also target them (Neo and KKK) and control what goes on in everyone's back yards. To get rid of them. Bottom line, the university and the NAACP has no control of what happens in an off-campus party. If they do, then why aren't the campus security knocking on my door?

If I was a Black guy I would go to the party in "White Face ".

How could a white guy dress up as a black guy? I mean that's absolutely offensive!! I don't know how anyone could consider that "in good fun" or "humorous" ... that's just horrible taste and completely offensive. You would never see a black guy dress up as a white person as some sort of joke. I mean the NAACP would squash that in a second ... wouldn't they??































Okay, nevermind.

Hey, big shocker... college kids looking for any excuse possible to have a party... what is the world coming to?

The university and NAACP seem awfully upset that they drank malt liquor.... is malt liquor not available for everybody to drink? maybe these kids like malt liquor.... or is the university and the NAACP SUPPORTING the stereotype that only black people drink malt liquor? Doesn't that seem mildly hypocritical? If a group of black students have a party on Presidents day and serve single malt Scotch on the rocks can I complain that they are mocking white people?

And a guy went in black face.... what if he walked to class in black face on October 23rd? Would anybody care that he was "mocking" black people? Or is it just because MLK day is involved?

And it's a darn good thing the NAACP is getting to the bottom of this... it's much more important than alleged institutionalized racism BY black people running elections in Mississippi....
