France Considers Naps At Work For Health

PARIS -- The French already enjoy a 35-hour work week and generous vacations. Now the health minister wants to look into whether workers should be allowed to sleep on the job.

France launched plans this week to spend $9 million this year to improve public awareness about sleeping troubles. About one in three French people suffer from them, the ministry said.

Fifty-six percent of French complain that a poor night's sleep has affected their job performance, according to the ministry.

"Why not a nap at work? It can't be a taboo subject," Health Minister Xavier Bertrand said Monday. He called for further studies and said he would promote on-the-job naps if they prove useful.

France's state-run health insurance provider will send letters explaining the importance of good sleep. The Health Ministry's Web site offers tips on how best to get a good night's rest.

The ministry's online "Passport to Sleep" recommends cutting down on coffee, tea, colas and athletic activity after 8 p.m., shunning TV time or working late in the evening, and listening better to the body's own sleep signals, such as yawning.

Bertrand said sleepiness causes 20 percent to 30 percent of highway accidents across France each year.

Some Europeans countries allow workers much more vacation time than over here, believing it makes for better employee production.

In North America, if you ain't working yourself into an early grave, you're not oiling the Big Business machines so that every family can have two cars and all the toys.
And we can't have that, can we?

Some Japaneese companies send stressed out employees to a spa for 2 weeks to work. I would love to do my job while sitting in a bath or having some chick give me a rubdown. Tell you what, my productivity would shoot thru the roof!

I am very lucky though at my job. I do have a lot of stress dealing with certain cusomers, but the people I work with make it tolerable. Plus, after 5 everyone but our sales dept leaves so it's just me in my area of the office so I can be lazy and surf on the net.

It's a great idea. I think we should also be aloud to drink on the job! Napping fights fatigue and drinking fights stress!
Yet another reason for me to move to Europe. Seems like that have it pretty good.

Europe has generous workers rights, when it comes too forming Unions. The working people have good representation. It is the one and probably only thing I envy about their way of doing things, compared too us. Amsterdam, seems too get it, when it comes too getting stoned, so I give them some credit for allowing some freedoms with that.

You would fit right in with your hairy legs, armpits, and chest!!!

Lampy you are correct about the Europeans giving employees more vacation time... and their economies don't seem to suffer because of it.

I work mostly afternoons, so there's no need for a nap. If I worked dayturn, I wouldn't mind nodding off for a half an hour.

Ive been known to take a quick napper in my car at lunch every now and then.

Yes I know I am nuts, but I could never understand anybody taking a "nap" unless I am really sick I can't lay down during the day and sleep.

I really don't nap either, but like I said, I work afternoons so there's no need. I feel like crap when I work days, though, and there are times when I am really dragging at work and just maybe would be able to close my eyes for a few.

This I can agree is one place that the USA has dropped the ball.

This number means nothing unless we know WHAT caused the lack of sleep.

I mean, what percentage of that group is due to partys, or late night TV or working another job?

If those things are the main contributor to lack of sleep, a nap at work shouldn't be the solution.

I would rather work a whole day (with lunch) and get home early than take a nap at the place I work.

I can do that at home. I can lay on the couch, enjoy the peace and quiet, but if it's not bedtime you won't hear me snoring.

why not just build in a bed under the desk like geroge from seinfeld lol

I have taken mid-day naps, and I'm only 37

Of course they are usually because it's the weekend, and I tend to stay up very late on weekend nights, then get up early and get my errands and chores done, so then I'm beat, come in , take a shower, and sit down and zonk out for 20-30 mins, then I'm good to go.

Wouldn't you think that the proper route would be to correct the overnight sleeping problem, rather than sleeping on the job. How in the world could you expect to better your job performance by sleeping during the 7 hour work day??? Ah, the French zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

hehe... i don't get a nap.. but if I get too stressed I do have a bunch of stuff that I can use to work out...

I'm surprised France is just now catching on to this. Spain is closed from like 10am to two pm every day for lunch and a nap. How taboo could it be.

As for the europeans work week, yes, very short. Lots of vacation time, but imagine going out at noon and not having anything open. I don't think we'd deal well with that. And as far as hurting the economy, well, people do with a lot less in europe than we do across the board. Less property (or none) smaller homes, smaller and fewer cars, etc.

i always do a 10 minute power nap right after lunch in my office. i feel so energized afterwards
