I have DSL where I live but the fun part is that it always cuts in and out constantly. I can't get anything done without it quitting on me.. It's probably going to go down as I write this.. I've tried 2 different modems and the same problem exists.. anything else I should try? I even tried a different phone cable.. I don't want this to happen when I have my fantasy drafts.. any suggestions short of getting cable instead? p.s. yup.. it cut out just as I was about to hit continue..

4th and long dude. Punt.
Or, call Obama and tell him of your situation - I'm sure they could work something out - put it in the health care refrom bill that MUST be passed immediatley, even though the changes won't take effect for a couple of years.
Try it.

My parents had the same problem with Verizon DSL, Verizon ended up changing the whole phone line to fix the issue. So get your ladder out there buddy and start changing some phone lines.

we had DSL for a while here and it sucked. Slow speeds and cut out constantly. Plus the modem made it really hard to use my own firewall because it had it's own DHCP server in it.

Have you had the integrity and capacity of the phone line tested? If a modem speed is set too high for the line to handle, you can get all kinds of problems. Also, are all of the phone lines in your place filtered? 1 unfiltered line can cause all kinds of slowdowns/drops on DSL. (even if that phone is not currently off the hook)
Regardless .... I'd have the phone company out constantly until the problem was fixed. I place a very high value on the money I spend on things, and I expect to get my mnoney's worth.

well i should get that figured out.. It's very annoying.. It was fine last week, and now it's just going crazy.. and I look at the modem's setting and it connects fine at 3008Kbps but then it'l disconnect, redo the handshake and if it connects at a slower speed the ppp does not pick up the signal... but well I'll have to get on the phone with AT&T

I can verify what Ytown mentioned about filters. One unfiltered line will cause exactly what you describe.
My DSL will occasionally drop the line but we're talking more on the order of once a month for 5-10 seconds. But unplug one of those filters and it's more like every couple of minutes. And always when the phone line is in use with a phone call.

Is there a reason you can't get cable? They have some new bargain packages around here that are cheaper than DSL. Everybody I know that had DSL switched to a cable modem.

Perhaps it's cost? Most cable modem setups seem to be paying 2-3 times what I'm paying for my DSL.
Of course, if it doesn't work, any amount of money is too much.

It could be anything. I had issues with my DSL for months, and every time I had them out they found nothing wrong. Of course it was working fine when they would arrive for service.
Finally had them out when it was out and would come in for a minute or 2 then go out again. The tech traced the problem to a junction box 1/2 mile away that had an ant nest in it.

I hate to say it, but just call your provider and have them come out and fix it..
I've had DSL,, as much as I hate TIme Warner, I'd still rather have cable.

Oh, yeah, after all that with DSL it still had issues occasionally, I switched back to cable about a year ago and honly had downtime once, and when I called they knew about it and it was affecting a large area due to a fiber cable being cut somewhere.

You get what you pay for.
As far as DSL goes it comes down to how close you live to a central office. The further you are away from one, the worse the signal gets.

had this same issue. AT&T told me that they would have to re-wire some of the house becuase it was built in 1930 and had really old lines inside. I would start there I do have Time Warner now (cable) and as expensive as it is I never have any downtime, and my VPN to work runs awesome.. It also helps that work will re-imburse me for my cable

well I think I'll make sure all the phone lines in the house has a filter first.. and then go from there.. I think someone may have took a filter off or isnt using one because like I said it was working perfectly last week..

My problem with cable was that they kept wanting to raise my rates ...... after 12 years of payments ..... month after month after month ......... So I told them to stick it. I switched over to DSL and it is every but as fast. There were some configuration issues at first ..... and a line that needed replaced ..... but when I told them that I was paying for a 1.5 line and by God that what I was going to get ..... they got right on it and got it all straightened out.

My cable internet hasn't ever gone up. My cable bill did creep up, so I eventually reconfigured that, but the internet part of the bill is a steady 29.99 until I switched to a bundle, HDTV/Internet/Phone bundle for 129.99
I actually see that they have 2 speeds available now, one for 19.99 the other for 52.95.

well I think I found the culprit... an old phone in the garage was plugged in without a filter... I took the sucker off..

Just a few general questions and comments:
The filters shouldn't cause problems with the DSL, just the phones. They block the peaks and valleys of the base sign wave. The phone can hear them as noise, but the modem should be unfiltered.
It is most likely a line problem, I don't know your skill set, but if you can run a fresh line straight from the service entrance, that's the way to go.
I have had cable and DSL. Cable was faster, despite all the initial claims and concerns about concentration, but my DSL has never gone out like that.
Just a few clarifications though: When you say "DSL Modem", I assume you are referring to a small "box" that plugs into the electric outlet and the phone line and the computer plugs in via CAT5 to the modem. You aren't talking about an internal DSL modem, right? Meaning it's inside the computer and plugs directly to the computer.

A phone in the house is not going to be the problem. The signals use different frequencies, the filters only help so that you don't get static and squeals on your handsets.

Of course, external... You mean they make internal ones? But well I will have to take a look at the service box and where it's at and take a look at that.. and see what I can do there...
But as far as my connection goes.. so far it seems good tonight... but I just got home from work.. but normally around this time it has been crazy...
looking at my modem stats it says my LOCAL SNR MARGIN varies from 10.5dB to 14.0 dB and my LINE ATTENNUEATION is 24.5dB now... i seen it as high as 35dB for the SNR and the LINE I think was always 24.5

Sorry to hear that.....Yeah DSL is tough because it runs over your analog telephone line. I had them come out when I had this issue and they said couple sections wouldve had to be re-done and wanted alot of cash..hopefully depending how it comes out of the box its only one line..so Iike shadow said if you can run a line from the box your self and stay with DSL your golden...
good luck

Now is running a line from that box just like running a phone cord from a jack there to the jack on the modem? or does it require attaching wires at the box and so forth?

Depends on the age of your NID(that's the box).Newer ones have an rj-11 connection, older ones have 4 screw terminals.Easy to connect, strip the wires, red, green, black, yellow, put them under the screws. As far as your DSL problems, call ATT.If the dsl worked fine last week, chances are it's not your house wiring. Does the troulbe worsen on rainy days?Is it worse at certain times of the day?Do you notice your conn.speed slowing then it cuts out,or do you lose signal abruptly? The answers to those questions will help the tech solve your problems.
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem

well I directly put a line into the NID(though I need to do a cleaner job at it) my SNR Margin and Line Attenuation has been steady at 35.0dB/21.5dB Hopefully that means my connection will be stable as well..

Well what I have done did the job... It didn't go down once last night.. and the SNR Margin and Line Attenuation is staying exactly where it was last night.. Before the SNR Margin was all over the place.. and I cleared the logs last night, and when I checked them this morning they remain blank.. So I think it's good.. Thanks..
