Cleveland Browns might wear brown pants for all road games during 2009 NFL season

Sunday, July 26, 2009
Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
Will the chocolate-brown uniform pants have a new life under new Browns coach Eric Mangini?

The Browns unveiled the brown pants in the disastrous second exhibition game at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., last summer. That was the game in which the Browns fell behind the New York Giants, 30-3, in barely more than one quarter.

That national prime-time performance, punctuated by several major injuries, contributed to the bad taste left by the radical look of the brown pants. They have been locked up in the Browns' equipment room ever since.

But rumors have surfaced recently that Mangini intends to surprise everyone by dressing his team in brown pants for every road game this year.

A Browns official could have shot the rumor down. But when it was posed to Neal Gulkis, director of public relations, he responded, "No final determination has been made."

Gulkis went on to point out that pant colors - unlike jerseys - do not have to be approved by the league before the season.

"You can decide what pants you will be wearing as late as the day before a game," Gulkis wrote in an e-mail.

Teams must declare whether they wish to wear their dark or white jersey for each home game. The visiting team then must wear the alternate dark or white jersey. So if any of the Browns' opponents wish to wear white at home, the Browns would be forced to wear their brown jerseys.

Which then would raise the possibility of a brown jersey-brown pants combination. They would look like giant Fudgesicles.

If we are winning games.. I don't care what colors we wear... but Brown on Brown? Has that ever happened before in Browns history?

Guess it couldn't look any worse than the Steelers w/ their off black color jerseys that they wear at times...

Brown on Brown would be fine, but they have to have a stripe on the pants for it to work.

Somebody in the front office is messing with Grossi ... gotta be ... the Browns' website poll after the Giants preseason game last year was overwhelmingly against the brown pants. They would look like turds in brown-on-brown.

The brown pants blow.

Not the word I would use to describe the look, but it works.

I agree..let's shake it up a bit. Brown is one of our colors and now we have people all worried what it will look like? If we win..it will be the look of winners..if not..scrap it and go back to the Kardiac Kids era..Orange pants/Brown jersey.

Bingo. If there had just been a stripe down the side of those pants, they'd have looked fine. Instead the all brown made them look like they were wearing tights.

I think big white stripes, possibly w/ thin bands of orange on each side would look great on the sides of those brown pants.

I swear, we Browns fans probably discuss uniforms more than fans of any other team in the league.

I'm doing my best to draw a mental picture of a brown jersey with brown pants, white numbers and letters and an orange helmet....

Not saying for sure that it doesn't work, but in my minds eye... YUCK

I might ... and I stress might .... be in favor of orange jerseys with brown pants.

I'd have to see tham to be sure though.

Home team picks their jersey color, we have to wear the opposite.

I could see teams picking white just to see us look like turds on the field.

My wife is constantly talking about going back to the ugly orange pants.

My take is that it's pretty obvious I didn't choose my favorite football team based on fashion.

Iron City Beer did make it's start in Pittsburgh.. But I was just in PA (in my hometown) over the weekend and I stopped by a local resturant for lunch. While there, I read an article in the local paper about Iron City Beer.

They made the last barrel of it last week in the old brewery that it's been made in for forever.

The canned beer has been made someplace in NY,, don't remember the city or the brewery. But the Bottled and Kegged versions have been made in Pittsburgh all this time.. Until last week.

The brewing of Iron City Beer and IC Light is being moved to Latrobe PA to the old Rolling Rock brewery.. Rolling Rock was sold to Anheiser Bush a number of years back.

I guess 80 or so folks lost thier jobs at the old brewery but they said it would take 12 to 15 million to modernize the old place and it just wasn't worth it.

That's way more info they you wanted.....

j/c,...I wouldn't care, but I don't support this idea. Some folks think it's bad enough we don't have a helmet logo.

Some traditions just need to be left alone, and sometimes new ones do need to be started. This one screams ugly, in my opinion. If it doesn' matter what color it is if we're winning, why change it ??

Hopefully what really needed changing has been accomplished. We'll see.

Awesome!

I've been waiting for the Brown/Brown combo. I don't like the White jersey with Brown pants. Heck, I wouldn't mind Orange jersey with Brown pants.

If my opinion mattered:

Home: White pants / Brown jersey
Road: White pants / White jersey
Alternate Home: Orange pants / Brown jersey
Alternate Road: Brown pants / Brown jersey

not that it matters, because it's just what they're wearing, i didn't think the brown jerseys looked all that bad, white jersey on brown pants wasn't bad.

could be worse, you could have to put on bengal jerseys every sunday.

Wasn't a fan of the brown pants...and after that game, I wanted to bury them in lime!

I am, however, a fan of the orange jerseys.

Then again, I wouldn't mind if we scrapped the whole color scheme and start fresh...but I know that idea won't fly

what happens if we play a road game in high heat, like early in the season... I'd rather they wear white pants, they don't attract heat as much. It's just a tiny edge, but take any you can get.

This whole thing kills me. WTF is the difference what color the uniforms are? Every team at some point makes changes. Tweaking the uniform would mean nothing in the grand scheme of things.

I was discussing this with a friend, and he said it was the same as the no logo thing and no cheerleaders.......tradition. What tradition? The Cleveland Browns tradition in most peoples eyes is one of losing. The winning tradition that was here now resides in Baltimore. Maybe that's what this team needs, a change.

I could care less what kind of uniforms they have, I just want a team that plays to win. A team that makes you not want to play them again anytime soon. I find it funny when we wear our "throw backs", what a joke, they are the same thing they wear now.

I know it's not popular to say, but maybe they should change the uniform. Exercise the ghost of Modell out of our system. People act as if the uniform would change somehow it would hurt the tradition. Hurt what, sucking for over a decade? The last championship team had a logo, the Brownie king, I have a pennant from the game.......in excellent condition I might add.

I would love to see a change in the uniform, nothing drastic, maybe put the Brownie king on the top of the sleeve. The Brown pants were ugly, but if they had a stripe down the side I think they would look, pretty good.

While I'm ranting, what is the reason behind no cheerleaders? I've mention this and was looked at like a traitor. I don't get it. I was talking about this with a stiller fan and he said they think we have no cheerleaders because we are all gay. (not that there's anything wrong with that )

I do understand the tradition this team has. I also understand somewhat why the fans refuse to accept any changes, but IMO it is time to move on. These are the "new" Cleveland Browns.............the old ones and the tradition left when the team was moved by Modell.

The thing most of us "traditionalists" believe is that a uniform change is not what was needed. A new uniform is not going to change the team from a loser. Football players and coaches do that.

Everybody duck....INCOMING!!!!!!

I hear you man, when we struck a deal to get an expansion team, I wanted to start fresh...I wouldn't care if they completely overhauled the whole team and image. Just stop sucking!

Sorry my Browns Friend,...if they had done THAT, I fear there would have been many of us that would not be fans any longer.

The Cleveland Haulers

The Cleveland Millwrights

The Cleveland Rockers

The Cleveland Bulldogs

Gold pants and lavender jerseys.

I don't think so.

The uniform change wouldn't change the tradition either. The history speaks for itself. Nobody can diminish the great past the Browns had, but many act as if anything changes, the past will be lost. Besides, I didn't think I was saying that a uniform change would make them winners.

Many teams had great pasts, take the Eagles for instance. Their uniform has changed a couple times, yet their traditions are still the same. There are numerous other teams that are examples.

While you may call yourself a "traditionalist", you overlook the fact that the team did make minor changes over the years before the move. Take the throwback helmets with the number on the side. Or like I said before the Brownie King was used on programs and I even remember it on football cards.

Noone suggests that a change is needed, but so many act as if it is blasphemus to even suggest.

So being a "traditionalist", what is the deal with the cheerleaders? I still can not get an answer to this.

I could care less about cheerleaders either,...I think we're all on the same page here,....just play some real football first.

But back to talking for discussions sake, brown pants is not what I would consider a minor change. I didn't even notice the jersey stripe changes back in the 70's and 80's, and they have since been changed back to the current form.

I have never liked Brownie, but I don't think I would want it to totally disappear. Same for Wahoo,...
