Longtime Eagles assistant Jim Johnson dead at 68

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Jim Johnson, whose attacking defenses helped the Eagles to one Super Bowl appearance and five NFC title games, has died. He was 68.

Johnson had taken a leave of absence from the team in May as he continued to battle a cancerous tumor on his spine. The Eagles announced his death on Tuesday afternoon.

A veteran of 22 years as an NFL assistant, Johnson is regarded as one of the top defensive minds in the league, known for building units able to pressure the quarterback from every angle. His defenses consistently ranked among the best in the league, including last season, when the Eagles finished third in total defense and fell one victory short of the Super Bowl.

Johnson is survived by his wife, Vicky, two children and four grandchildren. From Yahoo! Sports

Great defensive mind, and from what I've heard, a great guy. RIP.

I loved watching the Eagles D because they always brought the heat. Clearly a defensive genius.

RIP.

that's really unfortunate. the guy ran such a successful eagles defense but obviously, the loss is greater for the family. hope they're coping well.

Wow, that is really too bad. I loved seeing that guy on the sidelines, licking his lips nonstop. His philosophy was blitz and blitz some more. I really loved watching his defenses. RIP

Does anyone think he'll be a hall of famer? Philly may not have won any Super Bowls, but it's tough to contend that their defense has been extremely tough since he's been there.

it''ll probably be held against him that he never had a super bowl winning defense when hall of fame talk comes up, but i loved the way he approached defense. playing to win, rather than certain coaches style of playing to not lose.

probably not a hall of famer, but anyone who's been able to stay at that job that long without a ring must have been damn good.

he'll be missed.
