Vick sweepstakes: One day and, so far, no takers Buzz up!1373 votes Print NFL commissioner Roger Goodell… AP - Jul 27, 6:16 pm EDT FILE -- This is a July 20, 200… AP - Jul 27, 3:45 pm EDT 1 of 2 NFL Gallery Other Popular NFL PostsStar receiver says sorry, but it could be too late Redskin jokester mocks Tony Romo Washed-up diva QB getting a second chance at 41? If any NFL teams are interested in Michael Vick(notes), they’re not saying. A day after the quarterback was conditionally reinstated to the league, only the Baltimore Ravens would directly acknowledge evaluating him. “We’ve had long discussions about Michael Vick and we have a feeling about how he would impact our team and not impact our team,” coach John Harbaugh said Tuesday. General manager Ozzie Newsome declined comment. Previously, he has said the Ravens have enough quarterbacks. Other teams either refused comment or insisted they wouldn’t pick up the former Atlanta Falcons star, who served 18 months in federal prison for running a dogfighting ring and was released from home confinement on July 20. Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday that Vick can immediately take part in preseason practices, workouts and meetings and can play in the final two preseason games—if he can find a team. Once the season begins, Vick may participate in all team activities except games, and Goodell said he would consider Vick for full reinstatement by Week 6 (Oct. 18-19) at the latest. Two clubs that might have seemed like a logical destination—the Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals—said they wouldn’t pursue Vick. ADVERTISEMENT Bengals owner Mike Brown(notes) refers to himself as “a redeemer” and is known for giving troubled players a second chance, or more. But Cincinnati has a full complement of quarterbacks, and starter Carson Palmer(notes) has fully recovered from an elbow injury that sidelined him for 12 games last season. “When you have a situation like ours, he’s a very difficult fit,” Brown said. “Quarterbacks are like queen bees—you can only have one of them before they start stepping on each other. And we have ours. Carson’s the guy. That’s why it just doesn’t fit for here in a football sense.” The Dolphins rejuvenated their offense last season by mixing in the Wildcat, a variation of the single wing. The package featured direct long snaps to running back Ronnie Brown(notes), who usually ran with the ball. The Wildcat would take advantage of Vick’s running ability, but the Dolphins drafted another running quarterback in April: West Virginia’s Pat White(notes). They also have 2008 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Chad Pennington(notes) returning and promising Chad Henne(notes) as the No. 2 quarterback. “We don’t have an interest,” general manager Jeff Ireland said in a statement. “We like the players we have on our current roster.” Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said “we’re not bringing him in right now,” but acknowledged the team is always weighing its options. The Broncos have uncertainty at quarterback after trading the disgruntled Jay Cutler(notes). Kyle Orton(notes) is penciled in as the starter. “We’re always going to try to do what’s best for the organization—that could mean it’s a player or a situation that we’re going to evaluate,” McDaniels said. “We’re always going to try to make sure that we leave no stone unturned. If it means adding a player, we have looked at every player that we feel out there could help us at this time.” One organization that wants Vick is the upstart UFL. The four-team league plans to kick off a six-game season in October. “I still think we are the best option for him,” UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue said. Huyghue suggested Vick could prove to NFL teams that he’s ready to return— on and off the field—during the UFL season. Buffalo Bills quarterback Trent Edwards(notes) figured Vick’s conditional status would leave general managers in a bind. “It’s got to be hard to sign him, because where are you going to put him?” he said. “You don’t know if he’ll be able to play Week 1, and you want him to be your starting quarterback or at least compete for a starting job, (but) you can’t essentially do that as a general manager.” AP Sports Writers Pat Graham in Denver, Joe Kay in Cincinnati, Hank Kurz Jr. in Richmond, Va., John Wawrow in Pittsford, N.Y., and Steven Wine in Miami contributed to this report. Vick says he’s ‘getting close’ to a deal By LARRY O'DELL, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 59 minutes ago (AP)—Michael Vick said Thursday that he is getting close to signing with a professional football team but refused to elaborate. Vick made the comment to reporters as he left a courtroom after a hearing in his bankruptcy case. Asked about his progress in signing with a team, Vick said: “We’re getting close.” He declined to answer additional questions. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell conditionally reinstated Vick on Monday, a week after the former Atlanta Falcons star completed his 23-month sentence for running a dogfighting ring. Vick is free to sign with a team and could be playing in the NFL by week six. He also could play in one of a couple of football minor leagues if no NFL team signs him. His agent, Joel Segal, did not immediately return a telephone message. Vick, 29, did not speak during the hearing. Afterward, the U.S. bankruptcy trustee and a lawyer for Vick’s creditors shook Vick’s hand and congratulated him on his NFL reinstatement. Vick thanked them and said, “It’s exactly what I needed at this point in my life.” U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Frank Santoro postponed until Friday a decision on whether to approve $1.5 million in legal fees sought by Crowell & Moring, the Madison Avenue law firm representing Vick in the Chapter 11 case. Santoro was astonished that the firm is billing Vick for 8,000 hours of work over about 10 months. “I don’t understand how that happens,” said Santoro. Vick’s local attorney, Paul Campsen, said New York attorneys Michael Blumenthal and Peter Ginsberg were unable to attend the hearing because bad weather held up their flight. Santoro said he wants an explanation of the hours on Friday, when he will conduct a hearing on Vick’s bankruptcy plan. Crowell & Moring originally sought more than $2.6 million, but agreed to slash the amount to $1.5 million after the U.S. trustee and attorneys for one of Vick’s major creditors, Joel Enterprises Inc., complained in court papers that the fees were excessive. Vick filed for bankruptcy protection in July 2008 while he was serving his sentence in the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan. The former Virginia Tech star spent the last two months of his sentence on home confinement in Hampton. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-vickbankruptcy&prov=ap&type=lgns

Baltimore doesn't surpise me at all. I can see Minnesota and Washington considering Vick. Maybe Jacksonville. And Tampa.

Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

Vicks last 2 or 3 years weren't very good before jail, not sure he was going to improve being out of the game for 2 years.

my opinion is that Vick's chances in the NFL depend on how humble he is willing to be. if he is willing to be a part-time QB as a wildcat-style weapon, then there will be a bunch of teams lining up to sign him.
Minnesota is the most obvious example as they could line up Vick, Peterson and Harvin on the field at the same time with Berrian as the deep route guy to keep a safety back. That's a scary proposition for 10-15 plays a game the defense will have to plan for (I could see Dallas or Washington or NY Jets or Balitmore thinking the same thing....Philly technically could be a spot that would work too, but I just don't see Reid signing off on Vick).
If Vick comes in and demands a chance at a starting QB gig....well, what team would give him that chance right now? SF, maybe, if they weren't run by Singletary, but they are. Very small chance at Minnesota, but they think they are superbowl contenders right now, and even the most optimistic Vick supporters concede that it will probably take him a full year to re-adjust to the NFL speed as a fulltime QB.

After last years backup QB disaster I be happy if the Browns were at the front of that line. It would be fun to have him in wildcat roll.Whatever it was we were trying to do last year was no fun.

My guess would be the Patriots. Just makes the most sense. Backup for Brady, coach strong enough that noone will question the decision.

Unless the Patriots' offense is changing dramatically, I can't see Vick going there. Vick's accuracy (or lack thereof) just wouldn't cut it in that offense.
Honestly, I'd be kind of surprised if a NFL team picked him up at this point. We'll see, however.

Maybe a couple of years in a small cell taught him to be a pocket passer.

Well NFL Network has said that from Vicks mouth is that he's about to sign a contract with a team.
Wonder who that would be??? Ravens are said to be one of the few teams to have worked him out. Hope he doesn't go there.
Pats on the horizon??? They need somebody to run their version of the Wildcat...

i actually think the UFL is a perfect scenario for him (agree he probably doesn't sign so quick with them though)
he would get a year to get his feet wet in football again...be the best athlete on the field (most likely)....
and he'd be the face of the league and have a ton of PR trying to restore his image for a year....

PFT is reporting that mort said on espn that ufl offered 7-figure payment for the upcoming 6-game season. you'd think he has to take the offer. he's in bankruptcy so he needs the money but more importantly, it'd be easier for him to shocase his skills against subpar talent. it could make the diff in all the offers he gets in 2010.

Don't know if they can make him do it, but I heard on the radio yesterday that the bankrupcy court can make him play in the UFL because they are offering 7 figures while the NFL would likely only offer league minimum, around $500,000.
Since he will have to miss at least the first 6 NFL games, wouldn't playing in a UFL league that is 6 games work out about right. He gets to kick off the rest and get on the field. If he signs in the NFL correct me if I'm wrong but if he is suspended he can't even come to practice, watch film, he can't do anything with his team.

no, he can sign and practice with the team and do everything. it's up to goodell to suspend him up to week 6 but it's possible that vick can play starting week 1 with goodell's approval.

I don't understand where people are getting this from. Goodell said he would "decide no later than Week 6". He might decide tomorrow to allow him to play Week 1.

Just a general comment ......
I really don;t understand why people are so worked up over this guy.
He was a crappy QB before he spent 2 years away from the game. His career completion % is 53%. He gets sacked a TON for being a "mobile QB with escapability". His last year in the NFL was his average QB rating. (75.7) He's 6' tall on a really, really good day ....... with a generous tape measure. He was good at running the ball ... 2 years ago.
I doubt that he's kept up with the latest trends and defensive schemes and how to play them while sitting in a jail cell.
I'd pass .... and if offered Vick again .... I'd pass again.

Browns not interested in Vick BEREA, Ohio (AP)—Scratch the Cleveland Browns off the list of possible suitors for Michael Vick(notes). Browns coach Eric Mangini said Saturday that his team has no interest in signing Vick, the former Atlanta Falcons star quarterback who served 18 months in prison for running a dogfighting ring. Mangini said he’s happy with quarterbacks Brady Quinn(notes) and Derek Anderson(notes), who will wage a quarterback competition this summer to be Cleveland’s starter. Mangini, in his first season as Cleveland’s coach, wouldn’t say if he thought Vick would be a distraction if he signed with another NFL team. Vick was conditionally reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell earlier this week. Several teams have said they have no intention of signing the three-time Pro Bowler. web page

If you have to sprain a ligiment, the MCL is the one to sprain. He'll be back in a week, and probably wouldn't miss a game if it were the regular season.
I don't see this as incentive for the Vikes to make a move on either guy.

not necessarily true (well, bettter then blowing the ACL)- they called it a grade 1 sprain, but that can still take 4-6 weeks to heal. And by the way, it hurts like hell if you twist it wrong. Not good for a QB who's game is mobility. They will rush him back in a week, or he will rush himself back because of the QB competition. Not a good start for the vikes QB situation. (I still say Farve will be a vike by the end of August)

Though I don't agree with the idea of the player being allowed back in the league, once I accept he will be then, it IrKs me to no end that the Browns won't consider the player GIVEN I had to watch Ken Dorsey and Bruce Gratkowski for 3 games last year. And Don't Argue that the injuries won't be back because they're commonplace. It is a disgrace, one game the QB threw for 18 yards on the day. 18 YARDS!!! Is he going to be tuff to play against ? Yes, can he make game changing plays kind of like what Deion Sanders used to do? Yes, so if you Categorically reject the player your not trying to be the most talented team.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

X 2.
The only brown uniform I want to see Vick in is one that was a different color at the start of the game - the brown coming from getting his butt drug through the mud of a real field.
With that said, he should be able to play. I just hope he gets his ass strung out on every play.
