That's really not hard to find. It's more about the OL.

Thanks to all for posting all this stuff here. It's one-stop shopping at its best!
That being said, I do take a lot of what's said by reporters, and even by fellow Dawg Talkers, with a grain of salt. I'll reserve my judgments until after we see a couple preseason games.
If DA continues to improve and does well in live action games, then great. If James Davis plays as well in games as he does at practice, great. But, I'll believe it when I see it.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

thanks...
ddbubia hooked me UP!!!
Can't wait til preseason starts... so I can see if all these reports speak on the field .....
Very interested in seeing our defense as a whole... not really one specific player.. I do hope that Ahtuba Rubin gets more PT though...
Offensively... Of course I want Harrison and Davis to get carries... but also interested in Robo and MoMass production..

agreed, particularly about tempering expectations. i'm just glad to hear quinn finding success at something i perceived as a weakness in his game. the optimist in me says we can have two complete qbs hotbyoungturk - agreed! can't wait till preseason, even though i can't watch the games.

if there are places to watch Browns preseason games here there are places in socal.
And I have a slingbox at my family's home in Akron so I am good to go. It's a pretty neat device.

I caught this on the sportsline.com rapid reports at the top of the page. Thought you all might be interested in it!
10:07 AM: Rookie RB James Davis, who is becoming an increasingly intriguing option for the Browns, bolted through the line and raced 80 yards for a TD.
This new rapid reports thing is actually pretty cool, it allows you to keep up with camp. Check it out here http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/page/CLE
That's his second so far, because the 2nd practice on Saturday, I watched him go around the end 70 yards.
I was excited when we drafted him. I had him as a 4th round target, but was shocked we landed him in the 6th.
This may be a huge steal.
I didn't see tons of carries by Davis, but what I did see made me do a happy dance.
Hopefully this Davis brings a little of what a certain other 6th rounder by the same name had.

If Davis came out his junior year, he was projecting as a 2nd rounder last year.
He decided to play his senior year, as Clemson had high hopes. Well, Clemson pretty much sucked, the offense struggled, and his "Lightening" sidekick in the backfield (forgot his name at the moment) took some carries away. All of which dropped his stock.
I watched him as a Junior, and saw him at least once this year. Trust me, falling to the 6th round was shocking. I had us taking him (hoping) in our mock, but never thought he'd last til the 6th.
Could be a huge, huge steal.

Here's a loaded question: Is Davis that good, or is our run defense still just that bad?
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

It is a loaded question, but at the same time, I didn't see Jamal ripping off big runs, nor Harrison. I pray to the NFL gods that it's not the run D.

They had the Clemson coach on All Bets Are Off today and he (obviously) thinks the Browns struck gold with Davis. Said they had all new starters on the o-line and 3 of them were freshmen this past year. A big reason for Davis' lack of production as opposed to '07. He would have been a 1st or 2nd rounder if they had a decent line blocking for him. He'll be a great gem for us.

I've had a wait and see thing with Davis. I've been viewing him as a 2 year guy we develop behind Jamal, we work him into the rotation. Course if he turns out to be a homerun so much the better

Yup, that's right. I knew there were a lot of changes on their offense.
Speaking of Davis, I'm watching Training Camp Daily, and they featured Davis. They are talking about how impressive he's been, but they interviewed Mangini.
Mangini doesn't seem like a guy who throws praise around like nothing, but he gave said some nice things, some of which were already stated above. But the thing about it was, you could hear it in his voice. He didn't blandly say, "Yeah, James has done some good things for us." He sounded like he really liked what the kid has shown, and he said he's been "noticed." And he really emphasized that.

Monday PM Aug. 3: Hubbard's Day
Posted August 3rd, 2009 by Marla Ridenour
Second-year receiver Paul Hubbard, a sixth-round pick from Wisconsin, showed he wants to be considered in the mix for the No. 2 wide receiver job with his best day as a Brown.
After a great catch in the morning session, snatching a Brady Quinn pass out of the air on a crossing route, Hubbard followed it up with four good catches in the evening, one in individual drills.
Hubbard's best of the night was his last, when he hauled in a bomb from quarterback Richard Bartel and fell to the ground despite double coverage from Nick Sorensen and Gerard Lawson. A few minutes before that, Hubbard draw applause (the only clapping heard in the first five practices) for a good catch from Derek Anderson. He also pulled in an Anderson throw for about 20 yards.
On the other hand: Receiver Syndric Steptoe took a step back. The second-year man from Arizona dropped four passes, three within minutes. Three of those were thrown by Anderson, two on crossing routes, one by Quinn. Rod Hood and Hamza Abdullah were defending on the latter, a bomb.
Defensive star: Abram Elam, an ex-New York Jet and Kent State product slated to take over at strong safety, picked off two passes in the evening. His first came on a trick play (sorry, I can't give more details). On the second, he leaped for a Quinn pass overthrown for tight end Aaron Walker.
Who's not practicing: Linebacker David Bowens joined Braylon Edwards and Shaun Rogers on the bikes. Cornerback Eric Wright (hamstring) returned after missing part of the morning session.
Good sign: Anderson had some problems with snaps from rookie center Alex Mack during one stretch, but gave Mack an encouraging pat after their series ended.

What's taking him so long with mine? And Rish, bite me.
My camp report for the day. This will be the last one from me for a while.
-- Leggett and Furrey were our best wide receivers. Furrey looked smooth, quick, and caught it with his hands. He looks like a very solid addition.
-- The reports on Davis are true. He looks like a straight up stud. I'm seeing what I saw on film, and I'm loving it. He is hitting the wholes hard.
-- Eric Wright went off with a hamstring injury in the morning but practiced in the afternoon with it taped up.
--McDonald spent most of the time with the first team but Hood was in there a little.
-- DA looked pretty good today. He got great zip on it of course, but was pretty accurate. Quinn still struggled, though he did have a great deep ball that Steptoe dropped. Our offense looked better with Anderson in there.
-- Robiskie had a great pass this morning coming towards the sideline. Someone (I can't remember who) throw it on his wrong shoulder and he turned around at the last second somehow catching it and staying in bounds. On another Robo note, he looked smooth in and out of his routes, but simply wasn't targeted much.
-- Someone asked about Harrison. He didn't stand out other than dropping a few passes.
-- Our starting offensive line this morning was Thomas - Steinbach - Mack - Womack - Tucker. This afternoon was Thomas - Hadnot - Mack - Womack - Foster. They seemed to mix around the right side quite a bit, but Thomas and Hadnot stayed in with the first team. JT is the only player always on first team with the line.
-- Elam had some nice coverage on a few plays during the period I made an effort to watch him.
-- Rogers, Braylon, and Bowens spent the afternoon practice on the bikes.
-- After the morning session Rogers was forced to walk to an autograph tent instead of getting carted like in years past. He griped about this of course, and then after signing in the tent, he signed one other autograph. It was a picture of him my family had bought yesterday.
-- When I told Wimbley to sack Big Ben this year (I like to mention something along those lines to all the players) he responded, "Yessir. I been going after him for threee years. He looks jacked and is smooth in all the drills. He is a camp stud, as he has been since his rookie season.
-- Jim Brown was on the field during both the morning and afternoon sessions.
-- When I told Vickers to knock James Harrison down, he said, "Oh, I will."
-- Norwood is tiny. He looks like Dennis Northcutt.
-- David Patten looked awful. If he makes the team I'll be shocked. I don't think he caught a single ball. Or at least, that's how it seemed.
-- Veikune was calling the defensive signals for the second team.
-- If you're a pessimist you would say our o-line was letting a lot of guys through. I prefer to say our pass rush was dominant.
-- Alex Hall was limping around in the morning, but he still practiced in the afternoon.
-- Braylon looks like he could be playing. He was running great.
-- Having seen four different coach's camps, and remembering three of them, I like Mangini's the best. You mess up, and you run a lap. After dropping a punt, Lawson took off running without being told. There is a sense of discipline, including the lack of carts to transport the players around as I mentioned earlier.
-- Robiskie shrugged of signing some autographs saying he was late for a meeting. A fan commented that Quinn was still signing (I don't think he ever stops) and he responded, "Man, but he's the quarterback." He also commented on how happy he was to be back.
-- It seems that there or more game situations involved this year.
-- Players are being rotated a lot. You couldn't guess the starting lineup if you tried.
That's all I can think of now. If anyone has questions, feel free to ask.

I'm a little worried about that OL comment. It sounds like the guys are slow. Which means we'll be on our 3rd string QB late in the year.
I only highlighted the edwards comment because I think the guy is in mangini's dog house. I doubt we'll see him in Cleveland next year.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

Nice notes Deep, thanks for letting us in on what you saw..
Man I'm loving hearing about Davis... Stud huh? Cool
I sure hope they find a way to use Wimbley,, He's an incredible athlete.. But kinda like a missle with a broken guidence system....
Did it appear that Davis was getting more reps at RB than Harrison?
I keep wondering if Davis and Harrison could be our future 1-2 punch....
I don't worry to much about what we see at camp.. I've gone there at least once for the last 7 years or so and I always walk away saying,, wow, that guy is a stud,,, only to find that when its gametime, he disappears LOL
Having said that, I'm still a little worried about Quinn... sounds like he's struggling,,, (of course, it was reported that DA struggled on Sunday so who knows what it all means)

Not saying this is the answer, but it's been reported (yeah, for what that's worth) that he was having trouble getting into the 3-4.. maybe his ability to adapt is in question and he's not "getting it" so to speak.
He's a good football player from all I've read, so maybe he's trade bait somewhere along the line this summer. Just a thought...

I didn't always have the best view of the offense, but I saw Davis a lot more than Harrison. Either Harrison wasn't getting as many reps, or his weren't spectacular at all. I think it was both.
About Williams, I am as much in the blue as you guys. I hardly saw him out there at all. The starting DL was Coleman - Rubin - Mosely with Rogers out.

1. To you and all the other posters...Thank you for feeding us out of towners with some good info. Its stuff like this that makes me remember what I like about this board and the football involved.
2. "Rookie receiver Mohamed Massaquoi was criticized for drops in some pre-draft scouting reports, but he made the catch of the day in a one-on-one drill against Ivy. Quinn zipped the ball high to Massaquoi running a slant and Massaquoi stretched his long arms for the ball and secured it firmly."
Just remember QM never secured the ball into his hands without a bobble involved. There is hope for MoMas and he's still a project. Good technique can be taught. I believe MoMas' problem has been in his past programs his size had him catching balls more as a TE than a WR. Using his body to box out CBs and catching the ball with the body. But I've seen him forced to catch the ball with his hands. And in those situations I've seen him make the catch (tapes in college too). This is what tells me that he "COULD" become very good. You see when he runs a slant and a ball is zipped very high - there is no time for thinking and the only possible solution is stretch out those arms and make the play catching it with his hands. But in the learning process of the pass thrown closer to his body. His "HABIT" was to catch with the body not the hands. He is trying to change and break the habit...during this transition he will drop many balls simply because he is "THINKING" and not reacting yet with that action. Its not a 100% cure but MoMas seems to be a hard working type who is determined to improve. He doesn't have stone hands...he just is not "NATURAL" in catching the ball with his hands YET!!!
Django...yeah I see you making this your calling card of "I'M SMARTER THAN M/K COMBINED"
3. Outside of Injuries the thing I'm worried about the most is DA and his ability to "Siren" coaches with his practice play. Just remembered how he wowed Norv Turner in the Pro-Bowl practices then made a fool out of all those who were wowed!
Fool me once Shame on you...but Fool me twice Shame on me. My fear is that he hasn't fooled this staff yet. Will we get the same DA or can he really change??? for those who really like DA - sorry but that is my observation and fear.
4. Davis is the real deal and RBs can come from anywhere and become great given the opportunity. Why was he available in the 6th? Well at 210 he was the power back...and just got the power back reps - When viewed by scouts it was evlauating him almost with FB eyes and then looking at his size. And Davis thought he was a power back and have to build on it. So he increased his size for the combine and got a little slower. He has a lot more speed than the scouts thought. Glad to get a sleeper and at RB they can contribute right away.
5. Jerome n his blocking. He has the ability but never the frame of mind. I think Mangini's camp will bring the best out of him. I don't see Bell making the team unless he starts kicking butt on special teams.
6. Abdullah makes one INT for a TD and all of a sudden he's better than Pool...lol Man Pool can't get any love.
7. The guy I'm interested in the most believe it or not...Braxton OL 6'6 312 - so far everthing I read might be the surprise of camp, for us OL nuts...lol
Was so disappointed not to see Foster just taking the RT position over. I'd prefer Tucker at RG and the lack of a RT I think is forcing us to use him at RT.
8. Right now the only IRREPLACEABLE Brown is Joe Thomas...man I hope he gets an Iron Man award like 13 years from now
9. Coleman is a great pickup for us. Like the idea of using Robaire at NT - if we 46 it and want to give Rogers a rest or he misses a few games. Robaire has that LOS explosion for a big man! Corey Williams also as he has gotten some props from some of the stuff I've read. DL is finally becoming a strength!
10. Can't say much more about Barton and DQ - finally we got a LB unit shaping up and I think out of Bowden, Hall n DV we can get a good LB crew.
Thanks again for all the info!
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

Yeah, it'll be interesting how the QB comp looks once the preseason games start. Who knows, maybe DA finally gets the mental part of the game. I've seen quite a few people in the IT world get thrown on the garbage heap and then end up doing better later.
That being said, if he gives Quinn a real fight, it'll help up Quinn's game, and everybody will benefit.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

DA getting the mental part of the game and devloping his short game would be phenomenal for us... and it would probably put him on a Favre-ish level (yes, I dare to say that without hyperbole).
Quinn not being the guy hurts the franchise from a marketing standpoint, however.

i agree with practically everything you wrote except for one...guess which one, lol. before i go with what i disagree with, i wanted to post that i have high hopes for abram elam and i wonder if there is a battle between pool and adams. i bring this up just because i haven't read much at all about pool. i love hearing that in game simulation drills, elam had 2 ints, i wonder who threw them. [edit] i do remember one, now. i read one was on a "trick" play and that was all reporters were allowed to say about it. Quote:

i think it's a legit concern but what i would say is that DA is performing how i'd expect him to perform. people rolled their eyes when i said he had gotten more accurate through season. now we're finding that he's making great, ACCURATE throws (thanks, DT). people here said he was inaccurate and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. if he was inaccurate, it wouldn't matter if it was in practice or game time. he'd be inaccurate, especially with the short throws that everyone is convinced he can't make.
if there is anything to be worried about, it has nothing to do with DA. it has everything to do with quinn. how is it that the fan's champion, the one who was supposed to be able to make all the throws while hitting his receivers in stride is throwing behind his receivers consistently and is getting picked off when he overthrows or underthrows his receivers? is it an accuracy issue? is it that he doesn't understand the offense? didn't people use how much time he spent with daboll on the offense as justification on why quinn is better? that he worked harder?
please don't mistake this post as anything than legitimate questions. my stance is simple, we want both qbs to do well because ultimately, one of them will net us some picks and the other can lead us to the promised land. your concern about DA sirening the coaches is irrelevant if quinn can match the throws, which is fully within his own control. we should be GLAD that DA is making great throws in practice. it's a vast improvement in what many here thought he could do, period. we should be worried that QUINN is the one who ISN'T making those throws. it tells us that maybe we got our hopes up too much about him and maybe some of those here who were chastised for saying quinn was inaccurate (not me, but i don't remember who) saw something that the rest of us didn't.

Too many people fail to accept or even recognize that Anderson was and is a developmental QB. He was a bum coming into the league and had a HUGE mountain to climb in terms of learning. It takes guys like that alot longer to reach their peak, and because of the demands of today's NFL in terms of how quickly players must produce, very few players get the chance that Anderson is getting here. Now does that mean he's going to develop? Hell if I know. At best he'll be a system QB who'll do well with a good team but do poorly with a bad one. Frankly, Quinn looks like the same thing.
Neither guy appears to be the complete package. It comes down to which one can max-out what they've got.
And yes, obviously we're hurt in the $$$$$$ department if Quinn can't beat out Anderson.
I'm also more convinced than ever that the QB competition is real, regardless of what some might say. That's what's best for the team. Let the best player win the job.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

Frankly, my concerns with DA have NEVER been about his abilities...except maybe with his touch on short passes. My concerns with DA have always been with what is upstairs. If there is any pressure to win the game before the start of the game....You can rest assured that DA will disappear. DA performs like no other when the pressure is off. like the Giants game last year. No one expected us to win. It didn't matter if we lost. Our season was already heading towards the toilet. So the pressure was off. And lo and behold we saw the DA we loved to see. But as soon as there is the slightest pressure to win....like the Bengals game, (and many others) DA tanks.
So I could not care less about how he throws in practice. Brady has always been known as a gamer and not exceptionaly stellar in practice....so in all reality I am not suprised with how things have been shaping up lately....I really don't care who the QB is as long as we win. Both QB's have what it takes to take us where we want to go....DA needs to get his head out of his rear when the pressure to perform is on....and Quinn needs to show enough in order to get that opportunity to quiet the critics.....
Now I may lean towards Quinn...but thats because while he may not have the physical gifts the DA has....he does have his head on straight....the corrections to his deficiencies(not as big an arm as DA...but definitely good enough) are more reliable than the corrections to DA's deficiencies (keeping his confidence up...or head in the game or whatever the problem is...)
But in the end...I really don't give as flying....well you know what....as to who starts as long as we win or if we lose.....we lose playing up to our abilities....
I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...
What's the use of wearing your lucky rocketship underpants if nobody wants to see them????

That "Siren" comment made me think about why Mangini is holding off on choosing the QB until the end of preseason.
I could be way off base, but this reminds of goalies in ice hockey (I play hockey, not football, so bear with me). It's not uncommon to have a goalie that plays phenomenal in practice and the opposite in games (and vice-versa). Could that be the worry with Anderson? His natural ability allows him to shine in practice, but what about when the heat is on? I suppose the same argument can be made with Quinn, but I would argue the other way (that he would be significantly better in games than practices).
Before anyone screams bias, I hope Quinn wins the quarterback competition only because I think he's the better quarterback (benefits the Browns the most). If DA beats him out, fair and square, I'll be surprised but not dissapointed.
Scratch that: I'll be dissapointed that I bought a Quinn jersey (Mike, it's the only one they sold at Jersey Joe's, so get off my back).
Go Browns!

CCURATE throws (thanks, DT). people here said he was inaccurate and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. if he was inaccurate, it wouldn't matter if it was in practice or game time.
But accuracy is directly affected by pressure and fear. And during practice, a QB doesn't have fear of being flattened by a 300lb lineman or a linebacker. His only pressure is getting the pass off and accurate, that fear element is mostly removed.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

then you shouldn't have any concerns. i know i spent a lot of time detailing all the comebacks he led in 07. of the ones that come to mind, raiders, ravens, and cardinals (td pass, winslow forced out but wasn't called).
example:
http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter?game_id=29...&week=REG11
~2:41 in the video: 4th quarter, 11 seconds left, down by 3, getting pressured with a raven on his jersey, then around his legs, from the 50, needing 20 yards, look at what happened.

i'm sorry but i've NEVER read anything from the media saying this. i don't think this is generally accepted knowledge and i think this was something started on the message board and took off as an excuse for any poor play in practice. either way, mangini is the one who has said that you play like you practice.

you're absolutely right. practice is the best-case scenarios.
that said, here's the $13 million a year question if quinn's playtime incentives are hit: then why can't quinn do the same?

I will say this, and I forgot about it until just now.
There was a play yesterday where the pocket broke down and DA was on the run...he held the ball for nearly 15 seconds before he decided to throw it out of bounds. If he has any pressure whatsoever, he loses any sort of mental abilities he has and just goes brain dead.
That's not to say Quinn doesn't, because he's the only QB I've ever seen get a Delay Of Game penalty in practice, however he does make better decisions when the ball is in his hands. In a perfect world, DA learns the mental part of the game and we have a top 5 NFL QB. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any development from that since he has been with the Browns.
you had a good run Hank.

it's why you don't buy a qb jersey in cleveland. for all we know, mangini doesn't like either qb and we're drafting a qb next year.

I don't think that's even remotely true. I've seen DA stand like a statue with traffic all around him and deliver pinpoint lasers...I've also seen the opposite.
From my viewpoint, it has nothing to do with traffic or pressure...it's all footwork with him, and it's easily detectable from the second he takes the ball into his hands whether or not he's got to be poised or panic. Pressure often has very little to do with it.
Just watch his feet.

Well if Anderson wins it, we might have to begin looking into getting a new QB at some point. Because I've never been impressed with Anderson. Guy with a cannon who isn't afraid to throw it. The accuracy i've seen him throw with has never been impressive and in my opinion it was our two superstars who made DA look good. They went out and made plays, and they caught some difficult passes. Braylon did drop some stupid balls, but it wasn't that bad and he caught some great ones too.
My point is, I've always felt like Anderson was a QB who was built up by his team, rather than a QB a team could ever build itself around. If Winslow and Edwards could make the rediculous plays that it took to catch his bad short passes and we could get a drive going, Anderson was money. But that isn't the case, we don't have Kellen Winslow Jr.
If Brady Quinn doesn't win, we have a bad QB situation. May be our boy Ratliff isn't that bad. It would make me wish we tried to trade for Jay Cutler or something

I wouldn't say we have a 'bad QB' situation...just an 'average' situation...and that has no bearing on Quinn winning any competition.
Neither guy has ever really impressed me. IMO we have two mediocre QB's on our squad.
