Just curious, I'd like some input on this...good, bad, indifferent, makes no difference to me. This is going to be posted on my blog (once I finish creating it). I'm going to do the Browns too, give me some time (school is a Biatch this quarter). I'm going to finish writing the Oline after I sign off here.
A quick glance at the Bengals Offense (potential draft picks included)
Quarterback: Carson Palmer (CP9) is the franchise. CP9 is easily a top 5 QB in the NFL. Both backups are unrestricted free agents. Look for one to be resigned (hopefully Anthony Wright). Look for a late round draft pick (6th/7th rounder) to be spent on a young backup for CP9.
Running Back: Rudi Johnson is a workhorse back however he’s starting to get up there in age. Chris Perry is seemingly made of glass and has all the markings of a bust. Too bad we didn’t take Steven Jackson in 2004 huh Marvin? 3rd down back Kenny Watson is a UFA who will hopefully be resigned. If by some major miracle any of the following players are there in the fourth round take them!
1.) Tony Hunt RB Penn State
2.) Antonio Pittman RB Ohio State
3.) Kenny Irons RB Auburn
4.) Brian Leonard FB/RB Rutgers
Fullback: Jeremi Johnson is an All-Pro caliber FB…no fullbacks are needed in this upcoming draft.
Wide Receivers: Assuming everyone is healthy and not in jail, wide receiver is a position of strength for the Bengals. Ocho Cinco (#85) has led the league in receiving the past 4 seasons…’Nuff said. T.J. is a great complement to 85, although his body consistently takes a pounding every week going across the middle. Chris Henry (“Cheechâ€) caught nine touchdowns last year to lead the team while leading the team in a more dubious (no pun intended) category (arrests-4). Cheech has the potential to be like Randy Moss if he stays clean or Koren Robinson if he messes up again. I love Tab Perry’s potential but he’s a question mark because of a serious hip injury suffered against Cleveland in Week 2. All reports point to his return in 2007 but he’s on a wait and see approach until the preseason.
There are lots of intriguing options among the remaining receivers (Skyler Green, Bennie Brazell, Glenn Holt, Reggie McNeal, and Antonio Chatman). Chatman was bought to Cincinnati replace Keiwan “the Dancing Queen†Ratliff and promptly got hurt in preseason and eventually was placed on IR. Glenn Holt, an undrafted free agent out of Kentucky, showed flashes of replacing Tab Perry as the club’s primary kick returner. When Reggie McNeal was drafted in the 6th round last season, many including yours truly anointed him as the club’s potential Antwaan Randle El. He’s not ARE, nor is he going to make the team next year. Bennie Brazell showed flashes of being a potential WR for the club in training camp but got hurt in preseason and was placed on IR shortly thereafter. Who really knows what Skyler Green can bring to the table? He’s certainly talented (4th round pick by Dallas before being released). Maybe he can become the primary Punt Returner or a viable receiving option for Carson. Thankfully, the Squirrel (aka Kelley Washington) will be put to sleep in 2007. I did enjoy the dance though, because that meant that Cincinnati had scored.
As for the draft, who the hell really knows? Certainly the Bengals have a talented group of receivers, possibly even the best (Arizona though in my opinion has the best.) If Cheech stays out of trouble and Tab comes back healthy than no draft pick is needed. But if Cheech is suspended by the NFL or Tab is not 100% then I can see the club using a pick on a WR. Honestly, if a guy like Dwayne Jarrett is there at no. 18, pick him, even with all the holes on defense. I could see a 5th rounder (assuming we get two 5th’s…one from Jon Kitna leaving) being used on a possession type receiver.
Thanks
