I dont know the man nor do I claim to but at the very least he gave us some depth along the D front. Smith must have done or said something pretty significant to get released like this....BUT...as another poster said it may be a good sign that somebody else is stepping up who the staff feels has a higher ceiling. Lets hope the team is making this decision like this for that reason instead a player's insubordination.

With Rubin stepping up.. and Robaire coming back from injury... Smith is the odd man out...
Probably only keep 6 DL on the roster..
Mangini brought 2 of his ex-Jets...
Coleman and Mosley.. You can pretty much pencil them in...
So that gives you..
Shaun Rogers CJ Mosley Kenyon Coleman Robaire Smith Ahtyba Rubin Corey Williams
to the rest.. PS or Cut...

"I don't know where you got that."
From the initial article...there was need for them to reference the BQ punching as the difference maker for Shaun Smith to be released.

They must have some vet on their radar they planned on signing. I'm wondering who they have in mind to bring in. I didn't think Shaun would make the final roster, so I guess it's good to get it out of the way now. I just want to know who this player they are looking at signing. Mike Vick?

If you think about the usual procedure they sign a guy and then release someone to make room for the guy. I'm certain in my own mind that it had nothing to do with signing anyone. They likely will still sign someone. But they didn't have to make room before hand.
I'm thinking it had everything to do with him being the low man on the depth chart and it got complicated when he put on his display of petulance the other day which involved his position coach having an issue with him.
Yeah, he started out with a clean slate, but by his own actions (mouth) he put himself in the coach's scrutiny and the past does carry over since it appears he's learned nothing from it.
To say I'm getting rid of you in case I want to sign someone else in the future is to say I don't want you here starting right now.

Browns sign OL Fred Weary 08.09.2009 The Cleveland Browns today signed offensive lineman Fred Weary, the team announced.
Originally drafted in the third round (66th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans, Weary has started in 43 of the 63 games in which he has appeared during his seven-year career (2002-2008), all at right guard.
The 6-4, 307-pound Weary was a four-year letterman (1998-2001) at Tennessee where he earned All-American and All-Southeastern Conference first-team honors as a senior. Born September 30, 1977, the Montgomery, Ala., native attended Robert E. Lee (Montgomery, Ala.) High School.

Well, class, are there any questions? I think the message is set. What the heck, hope we get a good replacement. Robaire and Co. must be looking good. We got a bit more here suggesting roster space was opened up by his "departure." Anybody got the real why and wherefore of the deed?

Never heard of Heary..
All I know is that the Texans offensive line cost a QB his job... and now that guy is like a backup/3rd stringer.. lol...
I'll stay positive though..

Can't really say I blame Mangini either. The only game I remember where SS showed some true promise was the second '07 Bengals game where he blew Ghiacuc into the backfield on every play, but Ghiacuc sucks anyway.
He had a bad mouth, and I must also say that he had a lot of problems with his gap integrity. It could have been more of a Savage vs. RAC type of thing, but I don't know if he had the discipline or patience to make it in the Parcell's version of the 3-4.
I've always been a big Rubin fan anyways, and I feel like he has worked his butt off to get to where he is. I'd really like to see Ahtyba come in at Nose and have Rogers at RDE and see how that could help out our pass rush on that side.

I want Rogers and Ahtyba on the field at the same time... Keep Rogers in the middle though.. Otherwise teams would run away from him.. If he's in the middle he can go either left or right and not play "chase'm down."
Honestly... I'd like this either way:
LE Corey Williams DT Shaun Rogers RE Robaire Smith
Or
LE Rubin DT Rogers RE Smith

I dunno. I consider Rubin to be more of the pure NT type.

(On Alex Hall being a two to three down linebacker) -- "I don't really ever look at any of the players as specialists. I think that the one thing that is important to me is they're football players. Often times, if you have the guy that can just rush the passer, nobody pass blocks against him. They run against him. If you have the guy that is just stout against the run and can't do anything else, they throw against that guy. You try to find a strength and minimize it, then you try to find a weakness and attack it, and see how they respond. Ideally, what I want is a versatile, four down player that can help us in all areas."
Perhaps I'm reading too much into this quote...
...but does anyone else think it almost sounds slightly negative towards Hall?
I mean, at this juncture of his development...he is not the type of guy described above.

Shaun was no longer one of our top 7 D-lineman. Throw in his mouth and attitude and the writing was on the wall

Pure example of a player not being able to play on the field bigger than the Crap he mouthed off about. no longer was his play worth his mouth. Off to Denver he goes.....

Correct. If it had to do with BQ he would have been gone long before now.

That was ironed out between Smiths agent and M/K during the past Combine and Smith was said to be starting a new leaf...through the agents he was told to slim down, which he did.
Says as much in the article.
The article you posted says it all. He had an attitude problem while this staff is here. They didn't need to take any crap so they let him go. Good enough for me.

What I am really pumped about is that he really was not a top seven as far as talent and drive on our D line. That says a lot about the up grades we have made

He sure did. That's what got him off the team from what it sounds like. Not to mention punching your QB in the weight room, constantly flapping your mouth and never backing it up.
Smith is ok, nothing great. He's not the worst DL on the team, but his attitude I'm sure has a lot to do with what happened. I saw him arguing with Bryan Cox (DL coach) at the one practice I attended. If it happened once, I'm sure it happened again. And I bet Cox ain't taking no crap from Smith.

St. Louis, Tampa, Denver, and of course, the Lions, all showed interest. I only hope we dangled him out there first for a 6th or 7th rounder before he was cut.

He's not that bad of a player.. but now he has become a bottom tier athlete on our d-line with the arrival of the two ex-jets.. and also with Rubin getting a little better w/ his increased opportunities.
I would start Robaire and Corey Williams over him... so that means he is a backup.. Well now we have better backups...
Good bye..

He's a Lion.
Hey, didn't Detroit send us one of our better defensive players? http://www.cleveland.com/brownsbeat/index.ssf/2009/08/former_cleveland_browns_dl_sha.htmlFormer Cleveland Browns DL Shaun Smith signs with Detroit by Mary Kay Cabot Monday August 10, 2009, 4:47 PM It didn't take long for former Browns defensive lineman Shaun Smith to find work. Smith, released by the Browns on Saturday after clashing with line coach Bryan Cox on Friday, agreed to terms Monday on a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions, his agent Neil Schwartz said. He'll make $1 million with the Lions, and become a free agent after the season. "Shaun enjoyed his time in Cleveland,'' said Schwartz. "He thought the Cleveland Browns fans were incredible and wishes the Cleveland Browns organization only the best of luck.'' Smith, who visited St. Louis on Sunday, was scheduled to visit Tampa Bay after leaving Detroit, but the Lions never let him get away. He also drew some interest from the Broncos. Smith's signing may have been hastened by the season-ending injury to 11-year defensive end Jared DeVries, who ruptured his Achilles tendon in Monday morning's practice. DeVries, who was set to start at left defensive end, will undergo surgery and be placed on injured reserve for the season. Lions coach Jim Schwartz acknowledged that the team will be hard-pressed to replace DeVries. "It's one thing replacing the physical talent of somebody," Schwartz told the Detroit News. "It's another thing replacing the heart and soul of what you're all about. And Jared is that way -- he's one of the toughest guys in the locker room, he's got a lot of experience, he's paid a lot of dues with this club. And he needs to see some reward for it. That's the thing that's most disappointing, is that you'd like him be able to reap the rewards, be able to experience some good times for all those tough times he's been through." Mangini gave no reason for cutting Smith, other than to say he needed to clear a roster spot. But Smith butted heads with Cox during Friday's practice and was already on thin ice with some in the organization after reportedly punching Brady Quinn in the face during a weight-room altercation in December. The Browns filled the roster spot Sunday with guard Fred Weary, a seven-year veteran of the Texans who started 43 of his 63 games at right guard. Second-year defensive lineman Ahtyba Rubin will see increased reps at backup nosetackle and in the line rotation in Smith's absence. The Browns also added former Jets Kenyon Coleman and C.J. Mosley to the line this season. Schwartz told the Detroit News Monday that Smith's "talent fits us. I think it was important to get to know him a little bit and him get to know us." Darn right his talent fits you!

They brought a lot of DB's into camp, I'm thinking they won't do anything until the final cutdowns in several weeks.. maybe get rid of someone on our roster and bring in someone from another teams roster... perhaps..
Does anyone think that they will go after another Dlinemen... or sit tight with what they have. (barring injuries of course)

They signed a DB from Akron.
It's posted somewhere in this forum, lost in the shuffle. Can't remember his name right now.
