This argument assumes that every ticket for every seat in the stadium is of equal value, which isn't true. There are people who will be happy to pay $20 for a ticket with a $40 face value just to be able to go to the game. There are people who will happily pay $150 for a $100 face value ticket that is in a better location with a better view, even though that $20 ticket is out there.

That's the best argument I've seen. Very good point about them artificially lowering your items value.

The browns would not be lowing the value of your ticket. Demand for your ticket would lower the price.

The browns only will have to sell tickets at lower than face value if demand is not there to buy them. They are just setting the price of the ticket at market value.

That really chaps me. I'd love to meet the season ticket holder who doesn't think that this practice is borderline criminal.

See the guy above you.

It does nothing of the sort. If they lower ticket prices across the board by 50% (in the regular season) then they have artificially lowered the value of my season ticket package (and every other STH's package) and caused us all financial harm.

Do I think they will do it? Nope.

But they do stuff all the time that I don't expect.......

If the browns lowered the ticket price to fill the stadium during the regular season, your tickets street value would decrease.

But it is not the act of the browns lowering the ticket price that caused you financial harm. That is the effect.

The cause is the fact that there are not enough people to buy the tickets at the original asking price, and the browns are forced to mark them down to fill the stadium.

IT is not the browns fault, but the lack of demand for those seats that your tickets have fallen in street value.

Granted, I would say that the poor product the Browns have put on the field is a contributing factor, but you knew the chances of us being good when you bought your tickets.

Supply and demand at work. That's it.

Too much supply and not enough demand. It was bound to happen when the organization selling the product puts a junk product out there. It took longer than some other parts of our economy, but it did catch up to the beloved Browns.

Personally I'm happy they are finally realizing that people are tired of spending $ on a junk product. Maybe it will be a wake up call when they are selling tix at 50% off or having black outs. There's no longer a multi-year wait list for season tix as there was a few years back. People don't want to pay money to see this trash.

Ugh. It absolutely makes that assumption. Your ticket's value will only decrease if there is a ticket of equivalent value available for 50% off face value. A person whose tickets are 10 rows back, lower bowl on the 50 yard line will not see a decrease in the value of his tickets decrease if they mark all unsold tickets 50% off, because you can't get an equivalent ticket now.

We're not talking about a consumable good where every person who buys one gets an identical unit. Someone who wants to sit in the Dawg Pound doesn't care that he can get a ticket in section 540 for 50% off. If he can get his Dawg Pound ticket for 50% off because Dawg Pound tickets aren't sold out for that game and the Browns mark them down then he wins and the season ticket holder loses. If there are only Dawg Pound tickets available through resellers and he has to pay a percentage markup above face, then the season ticket holder wins. It's a gamble you take as a season ticket holder, and as far as I know that gamble has never been to the detriment of the season ticket holder. If its that much of a concern, sell your season tickets to a game right now for face value (before the chance of them being sold at a discount occurs) and hold out hope that you can get a similar ticket for less later. I'm willing to bet that you come out on the short end of the stick.
