You can't go wrong with Toshiba. Here's an Acer The Acer also looks decent at the same price and includes free shipping. There are a few trade offs, but I like the Acer's GeForce graphics with 512 MB dedicated video RAM. * The Acer's processor is rated slightly faster. Both are from the same family. * Toshiba has 800Mhz memory vs the Acer's 667 although the Acer comes with a gig more. * Acer's ports probably win out with HDMI and 4 USB vs the Toshiba's 3. One of the Toshiba's USBs is apparently also eSATA which would give you a faster transfer speed if you use a compatible external hard drive. A lot of similarities between the two after that. I took a quick look at newegg and thought I would throw that Acer out there. I don't think you would be displeased with either. You may never use HDMI or eSATA, but I think either one is nice to have (expanding a laptop's capabilities is certainly not as simply as a desktop). I would select the Acer because of the better graphics, but it is all about what you want it for.

RUN from Acer...mine went dead about 2 weeks after my Circuit City Warranty expired. Avoid Dell, returned THREE new Inspirons about a year ago. I went with Toshiba...this was also my first laptop and I have no clue why I bought anything non-Toshiba the second time!
We found my wife's HP on craigs and got a good deal. Craigs is proving to be a real value site for those who do face-to-face transactions.

I was wanting a laptop for quite sometime....just didn't have the funds to get one....a few weeks ago Wal Mart ran a Compaq for $299, it's probably the best $300 i have ever spent. i don't do any gaming but for getting online and checking e-mail it's perfect for me.

Welcome to PC based laptops! Sure they are cheaper initially but you will replace them several times over. My laptop cost me 3k and I've never looked back, the brand new 17" Macbook Pro. My previous laptop? A 15" old school Powerbook. BTW, even at approx. 8 years old now, my Powerbook (besides needing a battery replacement....but come on, the thing is 8 years old) is still running strong. I was just using Photoshop CS3 on it the other day.
My laptop was purchased at the same time as my roommates laptop. He has since gone through 4 laptops in the same amount of time. He finally recently gave up and bought a Mac. As an FYI, I am a HEAVY user of my laptop. Often running Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Final Cut Pro, 2D and 3D CAD drafting, etc etc. My custom built PC (since I couldn't afford a beefed up Mac desktop) can't even keep up with my new laptop. Speaking of which, I think I need to do another reformat on my desktop because it has been rather slow lately.

Just after the warranty...that sucks. I bought a refurbished Dell desktop about 6 years ago and the hard drive died just a week after it's one year warranty expired. On the other hand I am now typing from that same box and it keeps churning along <knocks on wood>. You do get what you pay for and when my Dell was manufactured they were known to use lower wattage power supplies and Hitachi hard drives. On-line sales with a focus on cost per unit has served Dell well although I think they have taken a hit on the reliability factor in recent years.
In the long run I am happy with the purchase, but desktops are certainly easier to repair than laptops. I obviously didn't consider reliability when I offered up the Acer. This site might offer some insight to quality. The results are from 2008. Toshibas do fare well (and the Mac Heads are vindicated). I have an older Toshiba 25" TV that I am very satisfied with.

i'd shy away from tigerdirect
I have bought from TigerDirect for years and have never been dissatisfied with their service. When an RMA was necessary they honored it appropriatelly. The last time I had to return something they e-mailed me the return postage and even overnighted the replacement.

Wal-Mart: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12170483Toshiba 17" -- $349. It isn't going to be a world-beater, but at $349, you're going to get solid value. If all you ever do is web-surf and check email and stuff, then it will be more than good enough.

Why not use TD? I use them all the time and love it. Best prices and very quick shipping. Never had any issues there. Can get some very nice refurbs too if you are ok w/ that. Going to order a desktop refurb soon w/ vista 64 bit, core 2 quad and 6 gig of ram for under $550. Hard to beat that.
Newegg.com is a good one too.

NavyDawg....couldn't agree more. The Mac Books are hands down superior to any PC. Used to have a Sony Vaio and a HP and there is no comparison. Apple has a product that functionally, cannot be competed with IMHO.

I went with the Toshiba I posted only because the one dong and PrplPplEater posted were out of stock. I only wanted the laptop to surf the web and check my email. No gaming at all. Limadawg I'm glad you got that laptop it was a great deal. Also I've never had a problem with Tigerdirect. I use them all the time and think they're awesome. Just don't buy used or open box items. I only buy new items from them. As for the Macs I wouldn't want one for free. They're overpriced and not worth the money they charge for them. Nobody ever made an operating system better than Windows XP Pro for home use. Thanks to everyone that tried to help!

well negative experience-wise, it's normally rebate-related which may not apply here. other than that, i've found amazon to have similar if not better pricing and no tax.

A year from now I'll probably be using my 4-year-old MacBook reading a thread from the OP asking for advice on a new laptop.

You mean just like I'm doing right now on my 7 year old (finally looked it up last night) Powerbook right now? That same Powerbook that I'm running Photoshop CS3 on to edit RAW image files right now? That same Powerbook that just needs a new battery, and that is the first problem it has ever had?

Fantastic, my 6 year old dell desktop still works great also but the hardware in it is horribly outdated and ancient.

Laptops have significantly shorter lifespans than desktops. Mine is 7 years ago but it's hardware is also a bit dated, but yet I can still run powerful current programs like CADD, Final Cut Pro, and Photoshop. This is only because Apple seeks out the strongest hardware possibly.

Oh jeez, I was just having a little fun. I never use the thing. But it does still run great, running Leopard. Up until I got the MacBook in 2006 I was using a Dell laptop that I got in 1999.

I still have my first computer. It's a HP Vectra desktop that has a 450MHz P3 processor,512mb,and a 40 GB hard drive. I have Windows XP on it,and it still works great.

My Dell laptop came with a 6GB hard drive, and Windows 98. I think I upgraded it to Windows 2000 in 2003 or 2004. It still runs fine, but the screen fell off.

My computer came with a 10GB hard drive, and Windows 98se also. It's old but I used it with a wireless network card, and it was faster than you think it would be to surf the web.

For general surfing and email duties, did you consider a netbook? I think Dell has one around $300. Some can even connect to cellular networks now.

No I didn't. I just wanted a new computer that I can use at work & home all in one unit. I didn't want to go over $1000 and I only spent right over $600 for it with a $1.99 shipping.

Even if you are still using the same MAC 5 years from now, you're better off with a cheap PC. I'll buy a PC every other year and be ahead of you in cost and functionality. MACs are overpriced POS. When they open it to all hardware, they'll have a chance to overtake PC's, but then no one will want one because they'll have the same problems as a PC. It's a niche market for people that are much cooler than me.
You buy your $1700 laptop. I'll buy one for 350 and it will run just fine. You buy your overpriced MAC desktops, I'll build one for 225 dollars and be just fine.

I'd really like to see what kind of hardware you can buy to build a solid desktop for only $225 because those prices surely blow Newegg out of the water. I've been looking at doing some updates to my custom built PC and priced myself out for right now. A processor and a decent 1 TB hard drive alone costs more than that.

Already have plenty of drives... It's not top end but runs everything I throw at it... but I got 8 GB of ram for 40 bucks, processor 50 (duel core), case around 40, dvd drive for 25, motherboard for 70.
It's been about 6 months since I built this last one... Have another one with slightly better parts that I built about a year ago that cost me around 300 at the time. They combine to give me a nice media center system in the bedroom and living room with an xbox as a MC Extender.

Even though Apple hardware maybe pricey, it is about the software. OS X runs circles around Windows. Viruses? not so much... Want to run both OS's, Leopard allows you to run Windows...typically faster than a PC.
So I guess, if you are cheap and don't care about all the issues and problems with Microsoft programs buy a PC.
If you want quality, ease of use and no issues, buy a Mac.

I'm running the RC on 3 machines. I can get the RTM now if I want, just haven't yet. The beta, and especially the RC are extremely stable.
I have no such problems you speak of. My machine doesn't crash on me. I don't have problems with apps. Viruses? funny... I don't even know the last time I had a virus. Spyware... nope, don't have that either. Runs smooth and I save a ton of money over MAC.

Some software? Why doesn't Windows support the industry standard Final Cut Pro? Programs do go both ways, thus why I own both. However, every program that I have on both platforms runs way better on the MAC platform even though my PC is far more powerful.
