The problem is that DA is only at his best against weaker opponents, with the exception of the NYG game. I think DA is the back up this year. Quinn gets the nod.
I think that is the knock on Quinn too...at least coming out of college. Never really played well against better teams. I already pointed out the Giants game of last year and the 4 TD to 1 int in 07 against Pittsburgh. They are not chumps.

I personally am not sold on Cassell, IMO I thought TB and KC would be the best possible place for Anderson to go to...I think DA is better than Leftwich, and is about even if not a tad bit better than Cassell.....I just know that one of these guys has to go and with last night behind us it looks like Quinn should get the nod as starter...I think the best thing for DA is a change of scenery

BQ had a QB rating of 121, when was the last time DA had that? I have to question the top 5 QB opinion you have. Please show me proof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He has one good game and then falls apart and throws interceptions. Do you really want that for a QB? No consistency there.
The answer to your question is the Monday night game against the Giants where he played a full game. 121 QB rating. The Giants suck though so that don't mean much.
The other problem I have with your statement is that you don't think Quinn is going to have bad games?? You are in for a rude awakening. How exactly do you know he will be consistent? He can be consistently bad for all we know. You are putting the cart before the horse, because he has shown to have bad games against better teams his whole career, and come back and drop a 4 TD game on Air Force. With that said I liked what he did last night, although the short stuff won't be there all year, but his intermediate passes were tight and spot on. Will he be consistent...I don't know that yet like the rest of yous!
I remember Frye dropping a 120 something rating on someone his first preseason.. if only that meant everything. No Graemlin needed.

Comparing Quinn's complete skillset to CF's is like comparing my brain to Alfred Einstein's (as Joe THEESman once called him)

Who compared Quinn to Frye?

I understand you guys are a little protective and jumpy..but go read the post....I said I remember Frye dropping a 121 rating on someone...If that only meant something, as in where is Frye now?

where's the rest of quinn's ND team now? i've never (well i shouldn't say that ) read something more ridiculous... what a player does in college has squat to do with what he can do in the nfl... its a team game here is the bottom line....mangini was taught by bellicheck.... defensive minded, ball-control, field position coach... bellicheck didn't like it when kosar chucked the rock everywhere....and kosar, was intelligent, and accurate... you think mangini whats erratic and gun-slinging? he's given derek a chance, just like quinn....because they both deserve it... but at the end of the day, its gonna be the guy who is less likely to turn the ball over...who moves the team...and that guy imo is quinn... run the ball, play smart football...move the chains...
Attitude is everything....FEAR THE ELF!!!

It's funny how it's a team game when it comes to Quinns college troubles against better competition..but when it comes to DA it's all him... Thanks for biting on that for me! I know it's a tream game..but you can't have it both ways all the time!!!

Quinn first action, 2007 preseason game 2 vs lions 13 for 20 155, 2 touchdowns late in game, only a couple offensive plays ran becaus of the grasp of the offense.
Quinn 2007 pre-season game 3 at Broncos 7 for 11 81 yards 1 touchdown, 0 ints
Quinn 2007 preseason game 4 loss to bears, Bq 9 for 14 64 yards o td's 1 int.
Quinn next action week 17 vs 49er's 2007 he was 3 for 8 for 45 yards 0 td's 0 ints after DA was hurt in the First half.
2008 pre-season game 1 loss to jets BQ, 13 for 17 133 yards no td's 1 int.
game 2 pre season loss to giants down 23-3 in first quarter Not sure what quarter Quinn played he was 7 for 12 for 124 yards and 1 TD a 44 yarder to steptoe.
2008 game 3 pre-season 26-6 loss at lions, BQ 14-24 106 yards 0 td's ... DA did not play, That is 7.5 yards per completion
2008 pre-season game 4 loss to Bears 16-10 BQ was 7 for 9 for 65 yards with 0 td's and 0 ints
next action 2008 week 10 regular season Broncos at Browns Quinn was 23 for 35 for 239 yards threw 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions in a home loss to the Broncos. Quinns best game, ?
Week 11, 2008 Browns 29, Bills 27, a win, Quinn was 14 for 36 for 185 yards 0 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions. But... The Browns were 0 for 3 in the redzone, Quinn threw 22 incompletions and the Bills threw 3 interceptoins to the Browns. a close win.
week 12, 2008 Texans 16 at Browns 6 Brady Quinn was 8 for 18 for 94 yards and 0 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. DA was also in, going 5 for 14 for 51 yards and 1 int. The team was 22% on 3rd down conversions.
next action 2009 pre-season Browns 0 at packers 17 BQ was 7 for 11 for 68 yards 0 touchdowns and 1 int.
last week vs the Lions Quinn was 3 for 5 for 29 yards 0 td's 0 ints .
I'll admit Quinn had a great game last night, and I hope it continues. 11 for 15 128 yards 1 touchdown and 0 ints. And I'll admit all those games weren't reg, season , or full games, and I'll admit that I type with emotion and from memory, And Looking this stuff up on NFL dot com has given me new insight into Quinns effectiveness. I'm glad to see arguements based not on , that he was a first round pick.
That is 8 of 13 appearances without touchdowns.
My projection, of 7 shutouts and 9 games between 3 and 20 points might be nonsense, or moreso that that illustrates his average so far, ... while that might be nonsense in your opinion, it is not complete and total nonsense in my opinion. And Derek throws too many int's
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Loyal Dog you are trying to make a comparison via STATs and sorry I saw many of those games living in NY and my son being a die hard Giant fan.
Eli Manning always showed promise and progress towards the STATUS that he was brought into the NFL...an overall #1 picked QB.
Regardless of his stats. He could make any of the throws - he could have mobility - His OL was not good in his first couple of seasons. His WRs were not stellar. And he was still learning and making mistakes...but always showing glimpses of his greatness. Sorry maybe there is a correlation of statistical Mediocreness regarding Manning and DA. But watching both of them...statistically is where the resemblance simply ends.
JMHO - But thank you for at least pointing out that DA has been nothing but Mediocre up till now. Yeah really want to cultivate that???
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

I know that many say "stats are for losers" ... but in the end, results are measured by stats.
TDs INTs Wins Losses YPA Completion % Red Zone Efficiency 3rd Down Efficiency
These are all stats .... and in the end, stats measure those things that get results.
To that end, last year was the first truly excellent statistical year for Eli Manning. This was his 5th year. Really, you could roll the playoffs of 2007/2008 in there.... because that's when the light seemed to come on for him.
In reality, if you recall, and if you're hionest about it, Manning played some BRUTAL football down the stretch that year. His games against Minnesota, Chicago, Washington and Buffalo were particularly brutal. Nonetheless, he did end that season, even after an outstanding game against New England, looking, statistically, an awful lot like Anderson.
Are there some things he does better? Definitely. However, results are what matter. There are no style points in the NFL.
There have been many QBs who "looked the part" ..... and who did absolutely nothing despite a lofty draft status. I am content to let this particular QB contest play itself out ..... and hopefully the best QB wins.

Eotab unfortunately it is not only New Yorkers that are subject to watching NY Football. I too watch a lot of football, and had watched a lot of Giants football with Eli at the helm. Their offensive line has not been that bad over time. Not great but not bad. At least you can acknowledge the FACTs that a first round pick has taken time to get it! It makes most every point you make about DA a moot one. From development and the time it takes, to completion percentage, to not getting us to a SuperBowl. Do you really want to compare overall team talent during that span...how about coaching? Thanks for cultivating the fact that DA has followed the same career path as one of the if not the highest paid QB in the league, with less to work with who now has gotten it!

Another truly insightful article on the subject at hand ....... http://www.cleveland.com/budshaw/index.ssf/2009/08/eventually_eric_mangini_will_p.htmlEventually, Eric Mangini will pick a Browns QB -- but will he believe in him? Bud Shaw by Bud Shaw/Plain Dealer Columnist Sunday August 30, 2009, 7:09 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Hats off (not you, Dwayne Rudd) to Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn. They've done their part to make Eric Mangini's tortured timetable for naming a starter seem downright reasonable and just peachy with them. Anderson slumped against a wall outside the stadium interview room Saturday, looking casually unruffled in blue jeans, flip flops and a T-shirt. He could have passed for a rock band roadie. Once inside the room he smiled and joked around, poking fun at himself for drawing a 15-yard penalty for unwittingly getting in the way of a backpedaling ref on the sideline. Has he done enough to win the job? "I hope so," he said, shrugging, understanding no doubt the odds don't favor him. Replacing him at the podium was Senator Quinn in his suit and tie. In that little-too-eager way politicians look for babies to kiss, Quinn embraced the notion that August will probably pass without a starter named. That's how Mangini likes his QBs after all. Smart. Smart enough to act like Indecision 2009 is the master plan of a genius mind and not a fear of commitment, or, worse, evidence the head coach believes creative tension in the work place crystallizes the quarterback form. "Derek and I are two mentally tough guys," Quinn said. "If coach wants it to go forever, I'm sure we'd go forever." Whoa now Irish, Mangini doesn't need any encouragement. Keep talking like that and the starter the Sunday after Thanksgiving could be decided by a wishbone pull between the two. Look, Quinn's the choice but not because he took possession in Tennessee territory and "marched" for a score. It's no wonder one lonely preseason TD pass -- Quinn to Braylon Edwards Saturday -- is being awarded the gravity of an anthropological breakthrough when -- after no sightings in the last six weeks a year ago -- it's really only a misidentified Yeti. So what if Anderson is without a TD of his own. He had 29 in 2007. The ability to throw the ball across the goal line isn't in question with him. His pass across the field Saturday intended for Robert Royal, though, now we're talking difference maker. Two Tennessee defenders lurked, each in a friendlier position than Royal to make yards after the catch. Naming Quinn, as Mangini almost certainly will in due time, isn't the same as committing to Quinn's development. That's really the question about the quarterback situation. Mangini has made it about Quinn and Anderson. But it's as much about him. Once Mangini commits, will he support in such a way that allows Quinn to take some risks and flourish -- especially so soon after the coach's Brett Favre Experience (a league-leading 22 interceptions)? Boomer Esiason has charged Mangini with creating an "environment of insecurity." Others, like Phil Simms, thinks a coach standing 100 percent behind a QB is the necessary precursor for 10 other guys to stand down and salute in the huddle. What we've seen so far of the running game suggests Quinn will have to stretch the field to be effective. Can he? Quinn is amused by the notion that he can't throw downfield. With any luck we'll find out. Will Mangini be with him with him? Or just with him because he narrowly beats the alternative?
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

I thought Quinn did somethings to quiet the simplistic fans that claim he's a dink passer, with no accuracy down the field. He put 2 throws dead on the money, in a very windy stadium saturday night. The throw to Robert Royal that Royal couldn't get both feet in, was a 20yd, deep out, that Quinn threw across his body right on the money. His velocity looked really good to me, I couldnt notice a big drop off in velocity than when DA was in.
Also Quinn's second possession, he recognized the blitz, and hit Cribbs(in stride, havent seen that in 2 decades from a Browns QB). People that think Quinn is simply a dink, dunk, weak armed QB, need to actually watch him. I thought Quinn really looked like a player, and finally someone separated himself a little.
Mangini definitely put Quinn in after the fumbled kickoff on prupose, he gave Quinn the perfect opportunity to seal the deal, Quinn did, end of QB debate. Now EM better give Quinn his 16-22 games, like DA and CF got to prove his worth.

Ahhhh, just name Quinn the starter..his performance should squelch the comments about Mangini passing on Sanchez..I saw a lot of improvement in BQ..all he needs is PT..thats all...his arm is strong..those bullets he was throwing were not weak wobbly passes..but right on the money..

Mangini didn't announce Quinn or Anderson as starter at today's press conference, either.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

I would almost bet by now that Mangini has made a decision, and the players have been made aware of the decision, but that we won't know for 2 more weeks. And that's fine with me. Even if Minnesota assumes Brady Quinn is going to be the starter, and prepare for him, and only takes 15 min in practice for the "Just in case Anderson starts"... That's 15 min. that they didn't spend on something else

I want a head coach who seeks every little advantage he can find. If it means messing with the fan's heads a little, well, that's OK. I'm going to judge the team and the staff by results on the field this year. I could care less if they're making the press's job easy or fun.

It really doesn't matter if EM told the team or not. They all watch film, practice, and play with both guys everyday. They know who the starter is, EM naming him in the locker room or to the public is simply a formality at this point.

Brady, or Anderson? Mangini still undecided on his QB Associated Press
BEREA, Ohio -- Browns coach Eric Mangini is still pondering his starting quarterback.
Mangini said Monday that he has not yet decided whether Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson will start Cleveland's Sept. 13 opener against Minnesota. Mangini praised both players for their performances in Saturday night's win over Tennessee, but insists he will go "through the whole process" before choosing his No. 1 QB.
Quinn threw Cleveland's first touchdown pass of the exhibition season in the 23-17 win over the Titans. Quinn started and went 11 of 15 for 128 yards and hooked up with Braylon Edwards on a 20-yard scoring pass in the third quarter. Anderson was 7 of 11 for 77 yards.
Mangini didn't reveal his quarterback rotation in Thursday's final preseason game at Chicago.

I would hope that over the next couple weeks one of them is going to see their reps with the #1s increase dramatically... that might be a sign.

How much advantage could this actually be? And for how long? 1 game maybe, if that? I think it's kind of foolish. And if we get reports coming out of practice this week that the two are splitting reps, then it's really, really foolish.
I want a team that can execute ... when the opposing team knows what's going to happen and still can't stop it. I don't like these games Mangini plays. I think he just ends up out-thinking himself ... just like with the Carey situation.
I think the mind games in an effort to seek an advantage don't really give you much advantage at all.

I believe the reason it doesn't give you much of an advantage is because the QBs aren't all that different. BQ is a little more fluid in the pocket, DA looks downfield a little more.. but it's not like you're preparing for Kerry Collins OR Vince Young...

Following that line of reasoning, there is the possibility that the competition is still open ... for real. I hope that's not the case. I can't stomach another DA rollercoaster if he somehow pulls this out.

Thats all a myth, its hurts our QB far more not to have reps than it helps the Vikes. They are going to try and get pressure on either, probably they would play ore deep zones with Anderson to make him throw short routes, Quinn will see more of a mixed set of coverages.
Not a big advantage for the Vikes not to know who's gonna play, and by that I mean EM saying who's going to play. The Vikes are going to be watching lots of Browns pre-season film, you don't think that they won't realize who the starter.
Everyone knows EM put Quinn back in after the kickoff fumble, with a super short field, essentially handing him the job if he executes, because EM wants Quinn to be the QB, he just wants him to remove all doubt. Right now, EM is only fooling himself, nobody else, give Quinn all the 1st team reps and be done with it, who cares if he announces it or not.

Teams are going to stack the box against BQ this year...A LOT. Until he proves it's a bad idea...in that regard it makes a significant difference, as that's the antithesis of playing against DA.
Although at this juncture, I would agree that it's pointless insofar as almost everyone knows BQ will start.

I personally thought Thigpen was better and because of his mobility better suited to SURVIVE there at the very least. His play kind of reminded me of Tony Romo. Real exciting to watch and the guy's gutsy for sure. Secretly I was the Buffalo Bills to make a move for the guy (as I am awfully uninspired by Trent Edwards in the passing game)

I don't see why you would stack the box against BQ and not against DA... BQ has proven he can throw the ball down the field and is quickly proving his ability to pick up blitzes and make the right throw.... and DA has proven that he doesn't elude the rush that well and makes mistakes under pressure... the absolute worst thing in the world to do against DA is to sit back and give him time, that is when he is dangerous.

Yes, but remember when Anderson was truly lethal - the beginning of '07, the Giants game - was when teams stacked him and dared him to make the throws...our lines protected, and he got the ball out quickly. That's the tape that's watched on 'good DA'. I don't expect our line to block as well this year...but it's been proven that if you stack the box on DA, and the lines protect, you're going to get shredded. In fact, I think the key to playing DA is through solid coverage...force him to throw underneath. Quote:
BQ has proven he can throw the ball down the field
Not in the NFL.
I'm not gonig to get into a he can/can't debate -- he hasn't played enough in the NFL to argue either way...but in the NFL, until you prove to be a legitimate threat, you're going to get stacked...especially without a proven running game. No one should know that better than Browns fans watching the last decade.

It's funny how it's a team game when it comes to Quinns college troubles against better competition..but when it comes to DA it's all him...
i never said that...its a team game for anderson too...
quinn and anderson are two different qb's....anderson is a gun-slinger...big plays and turn-overs..
you think mangini favors that over a guy who is smart with where he throws it?
Attitude is everything....FEAR THE ELF!!!

Not to overstate the obvious.. but in the NFL, if they put 8 in the box and still can't get to the QB... darn near anybody should look good. I will rephrase.. I've seen BQ get the ball down the field. I'm extremely comfortable that BQ can get the ball down the field. I have no concerns about BQs ability to get the ball down the field.

I think that we can all agree that with the huge disaster the QB situation is they will not add another QB to the mix. I think their plan will be to trade either Rosenfels or Jackson, and keep Booty.
Trading for Anderson makes no sense for the Vikings.
We can all stop extending this thread now.

So, Minnesota is out... Thread over!
Sorry, but other teams besides Minnesota might be in the market for a QB.
For example...
New England? Denver? Miami? Washington? Seattle? St. Louis?
Could all be interested in bringing in a QB like Anderson.
And... The thread lives!

Denver sure looks to be in need of a QB, but I don't see anybody giving us much for DA. I'd still be shocked if we ever get more than a 4th and maybe a trash player.

Couch/Holcomb, Garcia/Holcomb/McCown, Dilfer/McCown, Frye/Anderson, Anderson/Quinn....and people say we are not consistent at QB. Starting Quinn will give us 8 new "opening week" starting QBs in the 11 years of the "New Browns": So, we need to trade Derek Anderson so we can get the guy who will start week1 next year on our team to start learning the playbook (unless it's Ratliff) 2009 Brady Quinn? 2008 Derek Anderson 2007 Charlie Frye (1 half only, but he was the guy who started) 2006 Charlie Frye 2005 Trent Dilfer 2004 Jeff Garcia 2003 Kelly Holcomb 2002 Kelly Holcomb 2001 Tim Couch 2000 Tim Couch 1999 Ty Detmer

The fact that Quinn hasn't already been named the starter over a suck ass qb like Anderson lends itself to the thought that I don't see anybody giving us much for him, either....I'd be shocked as hell if Quinn brought more than a 5th round pick.
Golly, it's easy to trash our own players, isn't it?
