Lewis isn't worried about age as Browns' camp wraps up

Cleveland running back Jamal Lewis slashes throught the Detroit Lions' defense for a touchdown during a preseason game. Lewis, who turned 30 yesterday, has rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons for the Browns.

BEREA, Ohio - His beard is flecked with a few gray hairs, not noticeable from a distance but enough to pluck if he were vain enough to care.

But the NFL has been trying to write off Jamal Lewis long before the Browns' running back turned 30 yesterday. He just goes on with the same steely determination in his eyes, churning his legs and bulling ahead. A few gray hairs are not going to faze him.

"You just have to keep everything in perspective and know that this is turning 30, what everybody's been talking about," Lewis said. "Here it is and I still feel like I did yesterday."

The Baltimore Ravens thought Lewis had nothing left when they let him go after the 2006 season, but he has recorded back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons with the Browns. His age doesn't seem to bother Browns coach Eric Mangini, who said he is "age-blind and how-they-got-here blind."

"I thought 30 was the new 20," Mangini joked. "I don't really look at it as once you hit 30 suddenly you fall off a cliff or something like that. I've been around a lot of older backs who have been very productive. He's in great shape."

Great shape, to be sure, but don't do any historical research about running backs turning 30.
There are success stories. The Mangini-coached Thomas Jones of the New York Jets totaled 1,312 yards at age 30 last season, which ranked fifth in the NFL.

Barry Sanders rushed for 1,491 yards at age 30, but then retired. Mangini saw Corey Dillon set the New England Patriots' single-season rushing record of 1,635 yards in 2004 when he was 30, but Dillon slipped to 733 and 812 yards his final two years.

Walter Payton gained 1,684 yards in his milestone birthday season and had two more 1,000-yard years after that. Marcus Allen played until he was 37.

But there are also those who fall off the cliff.

Earl Campbell played his last season at age 30 and managed just 643 yards for New Orleans. Eric Dickerson played four years after he turned 30, but slipped from 1,311 yards at 29 to 677 at 30. Thurman Thomas also forged on for five seasons, but his 30-year-old year was his last with 1,000 yards.

To his credit, Lewis made it through Mangini's physically demanding camp, which ended yesterday.

"I haven't paced myself, I just did what the coaches asked me to do," he said. "I took on the mind-set it was going to be a tough camp with new coaches coming in. I just expected the unknown. Everything went good, I stayed healthy and got a lot done."

Mangini praised Lewis for working with the younger backs: rookie James Davis, who attended the same Atlanta high school as Lewis, and Jerome Harrison.

"That's always the trademark of someone who's a pro and very confident in their abilities," Mangini said. "He has a lot of great things to share with those guys. He spends time with them. He tries to give them a head start, to prevent them from making some of the mistakes that he made."

BROWNS/ROGERS: Browns coach Eric Mangini said he'd be comfortable starting defensive tackle Shaun Rogers in the season opener even if the Pro Bowler misses the entire preseason.

Rogers returned to the stationary bike yesterday, a day after hitting the tackling sled and working on individual drills. He joined his defensive teammates on the sideline for the end of practice, wearing sneakers and carrying his football shoes.

Rogers, the team's lone Pro Bowl representative last year, left practice Aug. 2 with what appeared to be a foot injury. He has practiced sparingly since.

I don't know what he has left in the tank, but I certainly wouldn't say he's done. Another 1000 yard season won't surprise me at all. He's a class act, a-z. Hope he has a great year. Happy Birthday, Jamal!

But the NFL has been trying to write off Jamal Lewis long before the Browns' running back turned 30 yesterday.

And so did many fans

It was a FACT that when he was still with the Rats, their offensive line was PATHETIC. Despite many of us pointing that out, few thought he was worth signing.

Along came 2007, and Lewis had a very Lewis-like season. No, he didn't have the same burst that he had in 2002, but he was far from washed up.

Now it's time to turn over the coin............

I adamantly opined that giving Lewis the 3rd year of his extension was a HUGE mistake because of the number of carries under his belt. Well, here we are in 2009 and Lewis is much closer to being finished. Yet we're going to have to carry some serious money into 2010 for a guy that won't be here.

The further away we get from Savage, the more we realize he didn't know jack-squat about how to handle the money. Maybe he knew talent (though not nearly as well as many in the NFL thought) but being a GM was WAY beyond him.

As this year goes on, we're going to be screwed at RB. Davis may be a surprise for a 7th round pick, but his running style isn't as elusive as many around here think. Harrison isn't talented enough to be a true 3rd-down back because he'll never be able to block. Then there's Lewis, who was never a good 3rd down back because he's an iffy blocker and a flat-out pathetic receiver.

Lewis served his purpose when we signed him, but he should have never received that third year.

He's going to give the term "three yards and a cloud of dust" new meaning.

Is that the cloud of dust he kicks up as he shuffles his feet in the backfield?

I, like you, have serious misgivings regarding our situation at running back. I look at other teams around the league and they can't seem to find space for all the potentially great backs they have. Maybe it's my Browns fan negativity showing through, but I don't think we have a starting caliber running back on this team. Lewis' time has passed him by.

I felt that way when Savage resigned him, it was time to move on. IMO, Savage's biggest mistake was not going after Turner. At the time, Chud was here and should have had some ties to him. Savage chose to spend the money on Lewis and Turner signed almost instantly with the falcons. I still would like to know if the browns ever went after him??? There were a few wanting Turner at the time, but most were behind Lewis.....

I hope Lewis can be productive for one more year, maybe Davis continues to surprise...

At best Lewis is a 3rd down short yardage guy.

Even then I have my doubts. He is effective blasting DB's once through the line. His problem is no explosion into the line. He just doesn't hit the hole hard.

We should have never given him a third year. We should have gone after Turner with the vault keys.

Davis may be ok but I do not see him as game changer. With the question of QB still in the air and the inexperience at receiver and lack of depth our offense could struggle. The good part is our OL has a chance of being a good unit and that is a huge plus.

In fact our line play on both sides of the ball will be THE major factor of how we play and how successful we will be.

He doesn't have it anymore, he might get 1000 yds, but it will take him 350 carries. The Lions game was very telling to me, you could see the mammoth holes opened up, and then see how slowly he got to hole. He's always taking little bitty steps, which used to work I guess when he could move alittle better. He's lost weight to try to get some back, but it ain't working, and thats costing him power.

His power is useless unless he gets a head of steam, and can get into the second level, thats where he killed us, and the entire NFL in previous years. I just don't see the ability left to where he can get 8-15 yd runs anymore. Plus he really struggles in the pass game sometimes.

I know that if we go with Harrison/Davis that there will be some pass protection issues, and some rookie type errors, but we have to get a consistent ground game going, and I don't see that with Jamal anymore.

Well, it always kind of seemed to me that Lewis picked up small yardage early in the game, but picked it up as the game went on. In other words, wearing out the defense.

The problem is that for that to work, our offense needs to stay on the field longer than it has these past couple seasons. That's going to wear down the defense as it is.

I'm not ready to give up on Jamal *yet*, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't mind having one of our other guys step up and replace him.

This is actually a good point, I remember this as well. It would be good to actually go back and chart this but my feeling is that you're right. We were miserable in time of possession last year, especially in the second half. God I hope we do a better job on this this year.

That's what happens when you have a defense that struggles to get off the field and an offense that struggles to stay on it.

I agree here.
But like you said, We can't keep our offense on the field and end up in 3rd and long contstantly. QB get pressured, "someone" drops a pass, punt.

We can't wear out anyones D like that.
I think Jamal can still do it.
But I don't know if Jamal thinks he can still do it. (stop tap dancing JL !!)

Just Clickin,
The reason Jamal looks like he is dancing alot is because there were usually Defensive linemen sitting in the hole, waiting to fill his "dance card". This week will be a good indication on what our o-line can do against a good defense. Last week, our o-line got the job done and jamal went looked fine. This week, lets see if we can actually line up and smack some Titans off the line. If we do that, Jamal will look good again. If not, long season ahead and it will not matter who is in the backfield.

I don't know if last year should really count as a 1,000 yard season. Lewis had 1,002 yards. While averaging only 3.6 yards per carry. Also he didn't have one game all year where he had more than 100 yards.

That's pretty bad. I know some of that can be attributed to the passing game being non-existent, but some of it also has to fall on the shoulders of Lewis. Who I think, has obviously slowed down a few steps from even 2007.

With a RB rotation (Harrison and Davis getting carries) Lewis will a little more fresh. But I think his days as a 300+ carry, 1,300 yard back are over.

I would call it a "fake 1,000 yard season."

When people say a player had a 1,00 yard year I think of it as a successful year. Last year was not successful for Lewis on any level.

Agreed, he averaged 3.6 yards a pop, yards in of by themselves prove nothing. Any back can get 1,000 if you give him the ball enough. He had holes last year, the line wasn't that bad, which is why Jerome Harrison averaged over 7 yards a carry.

What I don't get is this regime doesn't wanna "hand" the QB job to anyone, yet they won't comps at other position, like running back. If we were having a comp, Jamal would be the third best running back on the roster right now.

Once Harrison is healthy, and gets some carries, Jamal will be benched. Hopefully this regime is fair, and plays the best players because it won't take long to see that we have better options at RB.

I'm not saying he's going to average that in a season if he's getting 200 carries. At the same time, had Harrison had 279 carries last year, he'd had alot more than 1,000 yards. When Harrison was in last year, suddenly there were holes open.

I sure hope we get to see Davis get some carries this week, I'm real curious as to see what he does with the first string OL, cuz they were kicking butt last week, granted it was the Lions, but they were opening up ridiculous holes anyhow.

Yet Jamal didn't do much with those holes.

lol, no kidding.

yeah, a 7.2 yard average..... on a whopping 34 carries

Nah, that average isn't easily skewed by a large run or two

Last 4 games of the season: 7 carries for 8 yards..... but, but, but... he averaged more than 7 a carry!

Week: Carries / Yards
Week 1: -/-
Week 2: 1/2
Week 3: 0/0
Week 4: 4/20
Week 5: 2/41
Week 6: 3/12
Week 7: 1/ -1
Week 8: 1/5
Week 9: 5/48
Week 10: 3/80
Week 11: 7/31
Week 12: 2/6
Week 13: 2/2
Week 14: -/-
Week 15: 1/ -1
Week 16: 2/1

Hmmm... any chance that the two bolded weeks really, really, really skewed that average??

Purple has helped you on your way, so I want to further the cause by filling in the last few holes to the story.

You can thank me later

When Harrison was in the game, it was more often than not on obvious passing situations. When that's the case, defenses don't care about the RB getting a handoff. They have pinned their ears back and are rushing the passer, or if they are backers and safeties, they are in their full-on backpedal as they drop into coverage. That opens HUGE holes for any RB to get through.

In short, Harrison didn't get what he got because he has it and Lewis no longer does. He got what he got because for the vast majority of his carries he was an afterthought to the defenses.

Now sure he's faster. Hell, he was probably faster than Lewis ever was in his prime. But there weren't holes last year that Lewis couldn't get to but Harrison could.

It's not a fair comparison.

Having said that, it doesn't take stats to see that Lewis isn't the same guy he was five years ago, and from what I saw last year, he wasn't the same guy we saw in 2007. He is wearing down, and even on his best legs he's a limited back because for his size he's a sad blocker and an even worse receiver. Because of those things, you WILL see more of our other backs. We simply don't have a choice.

Yet he still managed a 1000 yard season with the putrid team we fielded last year. To paraphrase Sam on Burn notice, "You know Browns Fans, buncha bitchy little girls."

this is probably the yr., that thosee on here clamoring for more carries for Harrison are going to get just that, whether we want it or not. Mangini will try to rest Lewis more, which is probably a smart idea.

I am just ready to see if Harrison can "carry the load" like it seems many on here believe he can do. Personally I don't think Harrison can be an every down back. But that's JHMO

NYG, NE, Baltimore, and Denver all used the 3 or more rusher method last year.

I half-expect us to be that way this year....switching Jamal, Jerome and James in and out of the game constantly giving the defense different looks and keeping all 3 of them fresh.

No argument from anyone that he's not what he was 5 years ago.

What we saw last season was a RB who played on an ankle injury all season after being injured in the preseason. So did he look like he lost a step? If not he'd have to be Superman. So no, he wasn't the same guy we saw in 2007.

I expect him to be much better this season than last now that he's healthy. A lot of that depends on the O-line but I expect them to be a tad better as well since Steinbach is healthy and necktie is outta here.

We'll see because time is the witness and the season's just around the corner.

Personally, this preseason, I think Lewis has just been warming up.

If Jamal Lewis has 350 carries we are screwed because that means he will only have like 1085 yards. Hopefully we can keep Lewis fresh with about 250 carries. Then sprinkle in Davis and Harrison to keep Lewis fresh.

Older backs aren't meant to carry the ball 350 times in a season. If Lewis did carry the ball 350 and we did make the playoffs, he wouldn't do much good for us. He would be physically drained.

Not only that, but if Lewis carried the ball 350 times he would definitely be useless for the 2010 season...if he isn't dead already.

I believe the point being taken by Shep is the fact that Lewis was given the opportunity to carry the ball 350 times being the positive factor towards success.

meaning we had more than our share of 4th qtr leads

I watched the game, and for me it’s close, but I feel like the Browns have too much invested in Quinn and will make him the starter. They found a back in the later rounds this year, sixth-round pick James Davis, who looks like the real deal. I’m still not sold that Jamal Lewis will make the team.

To be honest, this never crossed my mind (Lewis being cut.) But it does kind of make sense. He has a pretty hefty contract (he could probably make around $6 or $7 million this year.) And he has not looked good in pre-season at all.

With the emergence of Davis and Harrison maybe Lewis doesn't make it.

I still think he will make the team. Just had not thought he wouldn't make the team.

I'd like to see more of Chris Jennings. Maybe give him 3 quarters this last game. I'm tired of the 2 yard runs with Jamal. J. Davis hits the holes hard and fast. Wouldn't bother me at all if he started and we cut Lewis.
