The Safety play really worries me. One of the few lowspots of the game last night is how Collins just drove down the field on us. He picked us apart over the middle
I dont trust Elam yet--- nightmares of him getting caught peeking in the back field in the GB game
Mike Adams --- huge liability when he starts
Poole cant seem to stay healthy I think the concussion thing is going to shorten his career
and Nick Sorenson is Nick sorenson
however I do think there is a young player on this team that could flourish in this position... Coye Francis.
How do you think we can sure up this position for this season quckly?

I wouldn't expect them to do anything, except coach these guys up. It worries me, and most definately will be a high priority come the off season. He sees something in Elam that I just don't see yet. Definately not worth letting Sean Jones go...and even better yet a healthy Sean Jones. We are thin there for sure and like I said I don't think Either of those guys would start for many teams...JMHO

I can't blame them for letting Jones go. I mean it would have been nice to keep him but he's not even starting for Philadelphia which has to say something.

G.Wilson and Y.Bell were FAs and Rashad Johnson was still on the board when Mangini picked Massa and Veikune...he opted to stay pat, start blaming the guys who made those "choices"

just clicking...of course the GM stuff of who we could have picked...
1. Hopefully Pool will be well...we are a better team with him starting.
If we do get in a jam...the guy I wonder about is Poteat??? Can he play FS for us???

Sean Jones healthy is still a backup in the NFL. Now, I'd rather have Sean Jones than Nick Sorensten, but I seriously doubt Jones would have wanted to be a backup in Cleveland.
you had a good run Hank.

I agree.
Sean Jones was a major liability in TE coverage and deep coverage. But he was really pretty good in the box.
The right team with the right personnel and he could be a quality contributor.
Brian Russell is still missed. At least to me.

I'm not a Jones fan by any means, but I don't know if SJ is a backup on this team if he's still here. The Eagles secondary is much better than ours, and Jones is quality depth there. Here however, our secondary is crap, and Sean might not only be starting, but could possibly be the best safety on the team. Granted that speaks much more loudly to the lack of quality in our secondary to SJ's talent..lol.

I really thought that Jones was going to be special when he was drafted.
Unfortunately, I was wrong on that one.
Brian Russel had rthe most savvy and was definitely the smartest Safety we've had in many years here.
Man I'd love to have another Rogers and Rockins .... minus, of course, the tragedy.

Pools concussion problems worry me alot. He comes up wobbly making routine tackles.
I think Poteat will make the team for a year as a backup CB, FS with his knowledge of the system. He will make the team before Sorenson. Abdullah has more playing time than Sorenson.

It would be nice. btw...that reminds me of one thing. If I'm 8 years old when the Browns come back in 1999 and I'm now 18...there's no way I'm a Browns fan. This organization has really done a disservice to it's young fan base. We have memories of Dixon and Minni. Of Bernie and Ozzie and Slaughter and Langhorn. Of Mack and Byner. Of Clay Matthews. I mean do we have anyone on this team that compares? One in Joe Thomas. And then two headcases are our next 2 best players in Rogers and Edwards. Oi vey. One other thing. Chris Crocker would be nice to have right now. I was always a fan of his. He played the back third of the field really well. And lastly Coye Francis looks like a guy that could be a real nice CB. Definitely not a Safety. I don't know enough about him yet but he moves pretty well and simply looks the part out there. Don't know what it is. Just that he looks like he belongs and fits. It's just a weird premonition.

Abdullah and Sorenson both need to go I think down the road, Francies will be a starting safety.
The play Pool got hurt on he layed a smack on the tackle, which he does routinely, not routine tackle in the context you used. His head was in there, and that's how he got hurt.
The TE's being open, seemed to me to be more from a lack of coverage by the LBs not the safeties.

I was 12 and now I'm 22. Honestly, this forum has turned me into the rabid fan I am today.

Yeah im with ya on missing Brian Russell, he's the best Saftey we've had since Eric Turner, Russell didn't have all the physical tools that Turner had but he made up for that with his knowledge of the game, his play recognition was spot on.
Poole has never reached his full potential and probably never will, he's got all the tools to be great but they never show up on the field at the same time, plus he's had so many concussions i wouldn't be surprised if his career is cut short by them. I know of at least 5 or 6 since being with the Browns and i'm sure he's had more than that in High School and College combined.
Adams seems like he can tackle ok but his pass coverage is worse than Jones he consistantly leaves the guy he's covering a 5-10 yard gap and that dont cut it at this level.

Wasn't pool 1 concussion away before the Detroit game?
He may not be back.

I'm not sure that Pool really was suited to play FS, at SS he seemed a lot better. He could cover, but I'm not sure he could QB the secondary all that well. Tucker was a good DB coach for us that developed Wright,McDonald, and others and yet pool didn't seem to develop into a good FS.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

I agree. Someone mentioned Rashad Johnson before. He was a pick i was praying for and thought would be perfect for us. Pool is not a natural FS. He is much better at SS/man on man coverage. Plus, as you said he does not QB the secondary well.
I've argued with someone about how bad losing Russell was for this team, but in my eyes he made the guys around him better. While he gave up plays, as a unit our DB's were better with him

While I know that player for player trades rarely happen ..... I have to wonder if there is a 4-3 team with an extra quality safety whio might be interested in Corey Williams? I don't know that he'll ever really fit the 3-4, despite him (I feel) giving one helluva great effort to do so.

What about Hank Poteat... can't he play some safety. Maybe thats the best spot for him now that Coye has shown he has some promise?

We will definitely be picking up a safety when the roster cut downs are made.

I liked Russel too...but he isn't that good, he isn't doing much in SEA, they still get torched over there....he's a Ken Dorsey like player or Renaldo Hill if you want a comparison from his position, heady but too limited...he gets the players lined up but just isn't good enough himself
You know who could have played FS too? Don Carey, he played FS and CB at Norfolk St...ironic isn't it?

The players listed as DB: Abdullah, Hamza DB 6-2 216 08/20/1983 5 Washington State 20 Adams, Mike DB 5-11 200 03/24/1981 6 Delaware 36 Anderson, Brandon DB 5-11 175 12/10/1985 R Akron 26 Elam, Abram DB 6-0 207 10/05/1981 4 Kent State 25 Francies, Coye DB 6-0 185 11/15/1986 R San Jose State 29 Ivy, Corey DB 5-9 190 03/29/1977 9 Oklahoma 30 Lawson, Gerard DB 5-10 195 01/12/1985 2 Oregon State 39 Lockett, Bret DB 6-1 211 10/07/1986 R UCLA 22 McDonald, Brandon DB 5-10 185 08/25/1985 3 Memphis 21 Pool, Brodney DB 6-2 210 05/24/1984 5 Oklahoma 23 Poteat, Hank DB 5-10 195 08/31/1977 8 Pitt 27 Sorensen, Nick DB 6-3 210 07/31/1978 9 Virginia Tech 24 Wright, Eric DB 5-10 190 07/24/1985 3 UNLV
Since Pool is hurt why not use Lockett, or at least get him some experience since he is fast and has the size and started four years at UCLA. He has to have something. Has anyone had any looks at this guy? Is he the player that was injured on a KO or is that Lawson? The only one left is Abdulla that has any experience except Sorenson. This makes me wonder where our GM was on the second round when we picked our Hawaiian LB?

Lockett will probably be one of the few UDFA's to get some playing time this year...
