BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns made a surprise cut Monday by releasing cornerback Rod Hood. The team also cut Nate Jackson and Robert McCune as the Browns have until Tuesday to get the roster down to 75 players.

Cleveland signed Hood from the NFC champion Arizona Cardinals, and he was expected to compete with Cleveland starting cornerbacks Brandon McDonald and Eric Wright. But Hood struggled in the preseason and was released.

Not surprising. He looked pretty bad in that Titans game.

After that McCune guy's performance this last game, I figured maybe he earned a few more days with the team.

Yeah this is of no surprise to anyone saw him get eaten alive against the Titans on Saturday. I like the way Ivy plays better than him anyways and the promise that Francies shows thus far. Even though ideally for our DBs I'd like to see McDonald as a nickel he IS passable as a starting #2 Corner. I'd say we have decent depth in the secondary.

Now, the real thing is, just how long are we going to make them cover this year? Our pass rushing resources are a bit limited still... (and that's probably a nice, fat, juicy understatement)

Wait until he has a two INT game, and Wright has a game where he struggles. All of sudden, Wright would then make a good nickel corner, and everyone would be looking for our new #2 corner to pair with our obvious #1 corner in Mcdonald.

Seems like the last two years people can't make up their mind on these guys. I'm not saying you specifically but the opinions on these two guys have swayed quite a bit.

As to the Hood release, I am surprised by it. I thought his experience would get him a reprieve.

I don't like it. You just don't cut people who can play corner and can tackle.

I don't think he's PS eligible because of how many years he's been in the league. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Rod Hood, gone? Good. I was getting a little tired of watching him give every receiver in his vicinity a 5 yard cushion.

Yes, rod hood is legit. Moreso than poteat. I think if we weren't so desparate at safety, we'd have kept hood over poteat.

So the corners we have right now are:
EW
McD
Ivy
francies
Poteat

Actually, Clay, I thought you were talking about Hood. I don't know if McCune is eligible for our PS.

My mistake.

Not sure about McCune. He doesn't have an accrued season in the league yet, I don't think. NFLPA website defines "accrued season" as "any season in which they are on full pay status for at least six regular season games." link

He has one season in which he played 5 games, so I guess it depends on what his status was for the rest of each of those seasons.

Edit: it looks like he spent most of his time on various practice squad rosters. I can't remember if there's a limit to how much time a player can be on PS in his career.

So who else gets cut.

The roster has to be down to 75 tomorrow and down to 53 on Saturday.

Hate to see Tucker go. He was one of my favorite players of the new Browns. Enjoy your retirement.

This is why I like the last preseason game. Sure there are no starters on the field, but the young bucks will be banging some heads trying to make the team.

Any guesses for suprise cuts?

Not sure if these would qualify as suprises, but I'll throw out Leon Williams, Jerome Harrison, Paul Hubbard, Louis Leonard, David Patten, Hank Poteat, Isaac Sowells...

If Hadnot/Tucker were healthy, I'd even throw out Eric Steinbach...but his time will come next year

Play to stay, nay. Expected him to play much sharper than he did. Sure hope the corner & safety wekness is improved. The pressure when we get it helps these guys. Rather see them press than give up huge cushions so they can fall down or turn and chase. Got to cover better.

Chicago Bears to sign cornerback Rod Hood to one-year deal
By Vaughn McClure

It is evident the Bears need help at cornerback. Maybe a former Super Bowl starter could give them a boost.

Veteran cornerback Rod Hood, who was released by Cleveland Monday, will sign a one-year contract with the Bears as early as Tuesday, according to multiple NFL sources. Hood took a free-agent visit to Halas Hall in May but opted to sign with the Browns.

In order to add Hood, the Bears would have to release a player to remain under the 75-player limit. The Bears have to cut their roster to 53 by Saturday, so Hood has to make a good first impression.

Hood, 27, entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles out of Auburn in 2003. After the 2006 season, he left the Eagles via free agency and signed a five-year, $15 million contract with the Cardinals. The 5-foot-11-inch, 196-pound Hood started 16 games in the '07 season then 14 in '08 as a member of the Super Bowl XLIII runner-up Cardinals. He also played in a Super Bowl XXXIX with the Eagles.

Hood's arrival could affect the status of Trumaine McBride, who struggled in Sunday's exhibition at Denver. But the Bears need depth at cornerback regardless, with Charles Tillman (back surgery) and Zack Bowman (hamstring) recovering from injuries. Bowman should be back for Thursday's final exhibition against Cleveland. It was originally reported that Tillman would be back for the exhibition finale as well.

I'm split on him...i do like the more aggresive run blockers. Based on our current roster and line health, no I do not want to cut him, but based on Mangini's requirements, I wouldn't be suprised if they cut him next year....so just a guess/opinion

According to Cleveland.com , Tucker wasn't released...just placed on IR.

BEREA, Ohio -- Ending their blackout on the subject, the Browns announced they placed offensive lineman Ryan Tucker on injured reserve and have not released him.

Tucker and the Browns may come to an injury settlement, coach Eric Mangini said, which could lead to the 13-year veteran rejoining the team when healthy. That would be a rare occurrence, however.

"I'm not opposed to that," Mangini said.

WKNR 850 reported on Monday that Tucker had been released.

"I think Ryan came back (this year) in good shape and worked extremely hard," Mangini said. "Just from when I was here, he was an excellent team guy, excellent locker room guy, excellent example of what a pro should be. Good toughness. A lot of really fine traits in him."

Tucker's injury has not been specified. It was previously reported he had surgery on a knee last week. Mangini said he has not talked to Tucker about retirement.

Also, the Browns traded defensive tackle Louis Leonard to the Carolina Panthers. Mangini said terms of all trades will be kept internal.

This is Mangini's way of paying respect to a guy who is a prime example of what he wants in a player. this shows that mangini has respect for a player who gives it his all, and instead of just cutting him he is going to place him on the IR and probably hope he retires, so he dont have to be the "bad guy"

When we signed Hood it was reported that he could play Safety as well as Corner...wonder if we asked him to play Safety and he refused???

He played Nickel throughout Preseason I was pretty surprised - but our depth with Poteat, Ivey and Francies is pretty good with Francies having the best Potential and I hope eventually our starting Nickel!

I am a little surprised we didn't get something for him in Draft choice - like we did with Louis Leonard. Especially with a team in dired need as much as the Bears seemed to be in. Still the one who got away was Carey he got put on the Jags IR today.

I feel very secure with our DB situation and play with Mangini here...he's been able to get water from rocks regarding that position wherever he has been!

JMHO - roster spot for Who? Lawson? somebody will benefit.
